Chapter 10

Eva's PoV

Before I knew it, it was time for my fake daddy/daughter day out to the speedway to coerce some random guy into buying into my dads company. He'd filled me in on the drive over, making sure I knew what to say and who to schmooze. He has a son around your age, make sure you pay more attention to him because you relate to him but also contribute now and again to show you pay attention to adult conversation. Remember, he needs to know I'm a family man so make up stories if you have to. Make it sound like we have done a lot together.
Yeah. Make it up alright. This has been the only time I've been out with my dad since my birthday five months ago - and that was only because mum had made everyone take the day off to celebrate. I smiled sweetly as I nodded along to his blabbering making sure it looked like I was paying attention. Truth was, I knew exactly what to do. I'd done it loads of times and no matter what the person was like, the same things always won them over.

We pulled into a space and got out of the car, walking beside each other like acquaintances until he swatted my arm with his hand.

"That's them by the gates. Get your act on!" He said almost desperately as I quickly plastered a grin on my face and let out a girly laugh. There stood two men, both tanned, the older with slightly long hair that had some grey streaks. He was a handsome man, his beard trimmed short but also beginning to show greys. He stood in a racing tee and black jeans, however he wore very expensive looking black work shoes that were polished so much the sun shone off them. Beside him was a boy my age, tall with a slim figure. His hair was cut short on the sides but long on the top and was thick and black. He wore a band tee and grey washed out jeans with rips in them. Unlike his dad, his choice of shoe was more comfortable as he opted for trainers.

"Dad, that spider was huge!" I said, gesturing at my arm where we had swatted me.

"It was a money spider, possibly the smallest one there is. You're ridiculous..." he shook his head at me as we stopped in front of this man and his son.

"It was not!" I protested, checking my arm once more. My dad laughed and held his hand out to the man.

"Sorry Francesco, my daughter had a run in with a tarantula..." he rolled his eyes. "How are you?" Francesco laughed and shook his hand firmly.

"Scared of spiders?" He asked me and I looked away quickly before shrugging.

"Maybe a little." I let out a nervous laugh. "I'm Eva." I held my hand out too and he shook it with a smile on his face.

"Beautiful daughter, Ben. You must be proud." Francesco said and my dad nodded, giving me a pat on the shoulder. "This is my son, Dean." Both my dad and me shook his hand and exchanged pleasantries before we headed into the area to await the race. My dad and Francesco walked slightly ahead, already talking business as Dean and I fell behind, looking at everything that was on or around the racetrack.

"Dad tells me your dad brings you here a lot?" Dean asked as he eyed me suspiciously whilst I read a poster on the wall.

"Yeah, but he's all business then too. We're in and out of here as soon as the race starts and finishes. No time for looking around." I said at the wall, not turning round to the boy who may have just sussed me out one minute into this facade. "You?"

"I'm here most weekends. My brother races." I stopped and turned to him. He could catch me out so easily if i pretended to know who he was talking about and he was making it up. I swallowed my nerves as i raised an eyebrow at him.

"Oh yeah? How comes I haven't seen you around then?" I tried to pass it back to him. He smirked at me.

"Business dad. In and out." He said, looking back at me without blinking. I let out a laugh as I made my way back to him and we walked over to a nacho stall.

"Want to share some nachos?" I asked, my eyes widening suddenly as I realised I barely knew this guy. "I mean, if you want. Or you could get your own. It's just the sharing one always has more cheese." I began to panic and talk non stop. I rubbed my hands together nervously as his eyes looked me up and down, drinking in everything about me.

"More cheese?" He double checked and I nodded. "One sharing nachos please." He paid for them and once we had them, he began to lead me to our seats. "My dad owns a box, no one disturbs us. You and your dad are the first people to be in it with us in years." I grabbed a nacho and stuffed it in my mouth.

"I feel honoured." I smiled sweetly.

"I wouldn't. You're gonna be bored senseless by the business talk!" Dean laughed, taking a nacho with two jalapeños on it and shoving it in his mouth. I nodded at his courage but he handled the jalapeños surprisingly well, definitely not like me.

"But the race is on." I stated. "My eyes will be scanning for your mystery brother." We arrived at the door to the box and showed our tickets to the staff who happily let us in. We headed down some stairs and into the box, only to find it still empty.

"Huh. Guess the grownups went to talk." Dean shrugged as he sunk into one of the comfy chairs and offered me the one beside him. "Today's match is gonna be great. My brothers rival is finally back after taking a hiatus. My brother beat him so bad last time it made him take a break. Ashton won't know what's hit him. My brothers been practicing daily. He's ridiculously good now..." Dean smiled as he offered me the nachos. I took one but held it as I thought. He did say Ashton right? How likely is it that there are other Ashton's in this town? And I know he can ride a bike because that's what he dropped my food off on. It seems like something he'd do, something reckless and dangerous. Should I ask?

"Ashton Irwin?" I asked, finally biting into my nacho. Dean let out a disgusted noise and rolled his eyes.

"Oh please tell me you aren't one of his fan girls." His interest in me disappeared in seconds and he turned away from me. Shit. Dad was going to kill me if I ruined this.

"Ha." I let out my lost patronising laugh, causing dean to turn back round. "People always think that, is it just cos I'm a girl?" Dean's jaw dropped as he stumbled around his words, trying to think of something to say.

"No! Of course not- I mean I- err- ha." I laughed back at him and patted his shoulder.

"Chill. I'm just messing with you. I know him, Ashton, but I don't support him. I like to watch the race and make my own mind up." I confidently took another nacho, one with two jalapeños, and threw it in my mouth. Under the intense stare of Dean, the heat of the jalapeños seemed like nothing. He seemed impressed by me.

"Then I know you'll like my brother." He said, sure of himself as the two dads finally made their way into the box with beers in hand. Dad gave me a quick wink to say it was going well and then we all focussed on the race.
