Chapter 20: Lessons in Strength
Raphael, Michelangelo, and Sarina duck into an alleyway, blocks away from where they originally got the alert. Sarina checks for their pursuers and, seeing none, turns to face the turtles.
"We've lost them," she says. "We are safe for the time being."
"Who's them?" Raphael asks. "How did you know they were coming?"
Sarina's eyes seem to darken. "I was afraid of this," she murmurs. The turtles stare at her and she blinks, giving her head a quick shake. "To be frank, I am very tuned to the Kraang. I get an alert when they're nearby." She exhales. "That, unfortunately, is who's coming."
"We blew the Kraang back to Dimension X!" Michelangelo says. "They were gone, caput!"
She shakes her head. "Not all of them."
Her head buzzes again and she gasps. Right on cue, the familiar sound of guns booting up echoes through the empty streets. The trio spins around to find that another group of Kraang has appeared, blocking them into the alley.
"Kraang has finally succeeded in tracking down the one known as Subject 60184," one says. It looks to its nearest companion. "Kraang, why did Kraang not find the one known as Subject 60184 at a time that is sooner than the time that is now?"
"Kraang could not find the one known as Subject 60184 at the time increment that Kraang has stated," the other replies. "The signal coming from the one known as Subject 60184 was untraceable for Kraang."
"Kraang does not need sass from—"
A sai lodges itself in the droid's head before it can finish. Raphael comes directly after it with a bellow, snatching his weapon back as he smashes the destroyed body beneath his feet. The Kraang open fire on him and his face breaks into a wicked, excited grin.
Michelangelo flashes a smile at Sarina. "Stay back, girl. We've got this," he says before backflipping into the fray.
Sarina looks around, searching for a plausible escape route. There aren't any fire escapes in this alleyway; the closest thing to it is a homemade, metal flower box with no flowers in it. The Kraang bullets whiz without causing any distress to her as she looks to a large dumpster, then to a few windows with sizeable ledges, then to the faraway flower box. If they move quickly, it could work.
"Raphael! Michelangelo! Follow me!" she hollers.
She hops onto the dumpster, snatches the nearest window ledge, and hoists herself up. As she straightens up and tries to jump to the next ledge, two grappling hooks whiz past and hooks onto the roof ledge. Sarina's eyes flash as she looks down at the turtles.
"I forgot that you had those," she admits.
Raphael leaps onto the dumpster, pulls Sarina to his side, and releases the hook, sending them zooming up the side of the building. Michelangelo follows swiftly. Once the trio is on the roof, Raphael releases her and they break into a full sprint. Every time they reach the edge of a building, one of the turtles grabs Sarina and carries her with them over the jump, dropping her off on the other side.
"Now that they know of my whereabouts, they will send more troops," Sarina says as they run. "We've got to lose them before returning to the lair."
"What happened to you going to TCRI?" Michelangelo asks from her right side.
"Well, seeing the Kraang has reminded me of something."
"What?" Raphael asks from the left.
"I hate them." She smiles, and for the first time, Raphael believes that she could undoubtedly be capable of murder.
They jolt to a stop as they reach a building gap that's too far to leap, due to the street dividing the space. Sarina can still feel a faint buzzing, only serving to put her more on edge. Raphael perches and watches the area ahead of them, the wind whipping his mask tails back, while Michelangelo watches their backs.
"Have we lost them?" Michelangelo asks.
"No," Sarina utters. "We still—"
There's a scream from far off that makes the group startle. Her eyes flash and she listens harder, just able to hear the sound of clanging and Kraang gun blasts. Sarina whirls around and points.
"It's coming from over there," she says.
Raphael's face hardens with a protective glare. "That sounded like April," he says. His hands clench into tight fists.
They head for the source of the noise without another word. Sure enough, when they reach it, they find that April and Casey have been cornered. Both are fighting back with everything they have, but they're slowly becoming overpowered by the sheer amount of Kraang that keep showing up.
"Hey lamebrains!" Michelangelo hollers.
The Kraang, April, and Casey all look up. April's face breaks into a grin. Casey smirks wickedly. The Kraang aim their guns.
"It is the ones known as—"
"Yeah, yeah. We're the ones known as turtles," Raphael snaps. He leaps off the building and breaks his landing on a droid's body, earning a resulting squeal. "Shut up already, would you?"
"Yeah boy!" Michelangelo whoops as he leaps down after his brother.
Sarina backs away from the edge as the fight resumes. She reaches into her pocket and pulls out her t-phone, brand new and unused. She finds the contact list and locates Leonardo's name, pressing it and putting it to her ear.
"Sarina?" Leonardo's voice answers after a few seconds of ringing.
"Hello Leonardo," she greets. "I would love to chat, but we need backup. The Kraang found us." She ducks as a few bullets whiz past her head. She can hear Leonardo talking, but she isn't listening. "Get Donatello to track us."
"Sarina—"
She hangs up and peers over the edge at the battle yet again. Casey has a cut on his cheek, but that's the extent of the injuries that she can see. Even so, the teenagers are struggling to keep up with the influx of Kraang coming after them.
Sarina's expression hardens as she starts to think up a plan. This will be the Kraang's last stand, if she has anything to say about it.
-----------
Leonardo, Donatello, and Destiny race across the rooftops at their top speed, the biting wind making their eyes water.
"We let our guard down," Donatello says. "We let ourselves believe that the Kraang were gone and now look! This is a disaster!"
"Not yet," Leonardo says. He leaps over an A/C unit and lands with ease back at his brother's side. "We've still got time to fix this."
The gun blasts get louder the closer they get to the place they tracked Sarina's t-phone to. Destiny perks up, her nose twitching as her ears start to swivel. She narrows her gaze slightly, craning her neck forward, then nods.
"Cyborg at twelve o'clock!" she calls.
Sure enough, Sarina's white-clothed silhouette is only a couple hundred feet away. Donatello picks up speed, urging Destiny and Leonardo to do the same. Sarina turns to them as they catch up, her eyes piercing the night with their light, and she exhales heavily.
"Good, you found us," she says. "We could use it."
Leonardo moves closer to the edge of the building, starting to look off. "It's the Kraang, it can't be that..." He trails off, eyes widening.
The carnage below is startling. Deactivated Kraang bot bodies lie everywhere and scorch marks line the nearby walls and the pavement. The other half of the Hamato team is fighting bravely, but they can't seem to make a dent. The fight has expanded into the street.
Leonardo turns to his group. "I stand corrected."
"Enough talk, let's go!" Destiny urges.
She disappears off the side of the building and there's a resulting crash, plus a squeal. Leonardo is quick to follow, unsheathing his katanas as he goes. Donatello hesitates, turning to Sarina as she turns to him.
"What about you? You can't fight," he says.
Her eyes flash and she looks away. "I am staying out of the way. Besides, getting off this roof is not as easy as you make it look."
He almost laughs. "Holler if you need me," he says. He whips out his bō staff and disappears into the battle.
Michelangelo grins widely at the sight of his brothers. "Dudes! About time!" he calls, smacking a droid with his nunchucks before flipping away.
Raphael destroys yet another bot by ripping its head off, his shoulders heaving. "You know what this reminds me of? Boxcar's mousers! They never—" He whips around and punts a Kraang brain into the street. "—end!"
April slices her tessen into a droid. "Does anyone have an explanation for this?" she demands.
"I wish I did," Donatello groans.
A droning hum enters the battle symphony as not one, but two Kraang ships appear in the sky, firing blasters at their resilient foes. There's more than one cuss word from the group, followed by scolding glares from Leonardo towards Raphael and Destiny.
"This is insane! Awesome, but insane!" Casey shouts. "How are we gonna take those things down?"
Destiny's scarred face splits with a wicked smirk. "I've got this."
She sheathes her uchigatana and morphs into a wolf, letting out a ferocious howl. The Kraang ships immediately turn on her as she leads them out into the street, bouncing and dodging the blasts with an almost glee in her eyes. Leonardo looks away for one second.
"Des! Focus!" he warns. "This isn't a game! You just made yourself a bigger target!"
"Let me take care of this!" she retorts, still dodging and rolling even in wolf form. "I've got it all under control!"
The ships close in and she rounds on them with a snarl, green eyes blazing with fury as she glares up at them. She leaps onto the nearest shop awning, using it as a springboard for her to reach the rooftop, where she briefly shifts back into human form as she tucks and rolls, sticking the landing. She's up and running towards the nearest fire escape, clambering up it like a lizard on a wall.
Reaching the far roof, the Kraang ships turn on her. She flashes another grin and crouches low, breaking into a sprint towards them. She morphs mid-stride and, with a powerful push from her hind legs, she shoots into the air and sinks her claws into the nearest ship.
The ship loses altitude for a split second as her weight shoves it down, purple sparks flying from the indents in the hull.
"Kraang is experiencing technical Kraang difficulties," the pilot says.
She roars and starts ripping at the metal, causing even more purple sparks to erupt into the sky. The ship starts to wobble in flight. The other ship starts trying to shoot at her, accidentally hitting its own ship in the process. Then, one of the blasts hits her shoulder and she lets out a high-pitched whimper, nearly slipping from her hold as her foreleg weakens noticeably. Her snarl gets wider and angrier.
She gives another forceful claw to the hull, tearing it open, and she shoves her head into the hole and takes a large bite of wiring. She spits it out and abandons ship just as it spirals out of control and smashes into the pavement, blowing apart in a smokey, purple explosion. Destiny hits the ground, panting heavily as the smoke clears behind her.
Raphael and Leonardo stare at her, shell-shocked.
"She wasn't lying when she said she had this," Raphael says. Leonardo nods slowly. Both are tugged back into the battle by some more Kraang.
The second ship isn't done yet. It shoots at the giant black wolf and she goes back to dodging, but she's much slower than before. Her shoulder is bleeding and she's limping heavily, only making her more vulnerable. Leonardo destroys the Kraang he's duelling with and immediately goes to help her.
A sharp cry pierces the din of battle.
April and Casey have been backed into the alleyway corner by numerous bots. April is on her knees with her tessen still clutched in her hand, blood trickling down the side of her face, and Casey has nothing but a broken hockey stick to defend himself with. The Kraang have their guns trained on them.
"Kraang came to collect the one known as Subject 60184, but the capture of April O'Neil will also be that which is known as useful," one Kraang announces.
"Surrender to Kraang!"
April bares her teeth in a sneer. "Never."
The Kraang's guns whir, preparing to blast, and they brace themselves for another fight. Then, from above, there's a sharp whistle that makes the Kraang halt for a split second. A pale form drops down, landing with one knee bent between the humans and the Kraang. A few cracks emerge from where her fist met the pavement as Sarina looks up, her eyes glowing far brighter than they ever have before and a look of pure hatred adorning her features.
"Nice superhero landing, dude!" Michelangelo praises before he's nearly smacked down by a flying Kraang torso.
"It is the one known as Subject 60184," one of the Kraang says.
Sarina rises to her feet, hands in fists at her sides. "If Kraang wishes to capture the one known as April O'Neil, Kraang must first go through the one known as Sarina," she says, her voice low and dripping with a challenge.
"Kraang! Subdue the one known as Subject 60184!"
The guns aim at her. Sarina smiles dangerously.
"SARINA!" Donatello screams, looking away from his own fight.
In one swift movement, she raises her arms, her palms glowing with blue light. As the guns go off, a blast of blue energy rockets from her hands, obliterating the bullets and the entire fleet of aliens. The turtles and Destiny are flung backwards from the sheer force of her sonic blast, landing on the pavement or crashing into the sides of nearby buildings or cars.
"Kraang! The one known as Subject 60184 is using the upgrades given to her by Kraang!" one droid shrieks as it tries to run for its life.
Donatello lifts his head, his world spinning as the pavement at his eye level dips and tilts. "Upgrades?" he mumbles.
Sarina remains straight-faced as she spins her arms to the next wave of Kraang, blasting them to smithereens. The remaining Kraang ship turns its attention to her and she still shows no fear. She extends her fingers, all ten of them starting to glow, and the tips blast with miniature blue rockets, spiralling into the Kraang ship and blowing it out of the sky. As it crashes to the ground, the entire area is shrouded in putrid purple smoke, and from that smoke, Sarina emerges and blasts the last few Kraang away with unforgiving shots from her palms.
When the area comes into focus, the smoke clearing, there's not a single live Kraang to be found. April and Casey, who still sit unscathed behind Sarina, stare at the carnage with slack jaws and bulging eyes. Leonardo groans as he sits up, cradling his head in his hand. Destiny lets out a weak whimper from where she lies amongst the shattered brick of an old building, no longer in wolf form. Raphael scrambles to where Michelangelo lays unconscious against the alley wall and checks for vitals. Donatello forces himself onto his hands and knees, panting heavily as his eyes latch onto the cyborg girl standing before them.
"Where the shell...?" he mutters.
A single Kraang manages to lift its head, its legs gone but its torso still active. "Kraang is not finished! Kraang will be that which is known as...back!"
Sarina's attention switches to it, her glare murderous. She extends her pointer finger, barbecuing the Kraang with one flick. Its brain body squeals hideously and scrambles away.
"You...you protected us," April gasps, shaking noticeably as she stumbles back to her feet.
Sarina's vision shorts out, static buzzing in her ears as her limbs spasm.
"Sarina?" Donatello asks, starting to move towards her.
There's a whirring sound and she collapses to the ground, her eyes dimming as she blacks out.
