Ch. 24: A Blow to the Face

In the hotel, Emily knocked on Velvette's door.

"Velvette, you good?" She asked through the door.

Silence was her only answer, either from Velvette's choice or from her not being in the room at all.

'Okay, lets try this one.' Emily thought.

"You know, if you open the door I have an expensive pack of cigarettes from Sloth, I really can't finish them off myself." Emily said, pulling out the Slothian pack of cigarettes from her pocket.

Silence was her only response again, making Emily worried until...

"Door's unlocked." Velvette said through the door.

Emily entered the room, seeing Velvette come out from her perosnal bathroom with a towel against her nose.

"So... gold blood." Velvette said, the blood visible on the towel.

"....Hehehe, so you found out about it, huh?" Emily asked, showing the Sloth cigarettes.

"Hard not to when you have a bloody nose and wear mostly dark clothes." Velvette added, pulling the towel from her nose.

"Sorry, it was the only thing I could think of doing to save you." Emily said, handing Velvette a cigarette.

"I get it, but... damn, that was risky." Velvette said.

Velvette put the cigarette in her mouth before snapping her metallic fingers, creating a spark to light it.

'Wow. Uncle Fizz never did that before.' Emily thought in awe.

Emily put one cigarette in her own mouth before she held a finger up and used her fire magic to light it.

"Don't you have a lighter?" Velvette asked.

"Got rid of it. Stop working." Emily said, putting her finger out.

The two of them then sat in front of Velvette's bed, the doll demon extending her arm to open a window to let the second hand smoke out.

"So, uh... quick question... how did you know your blood would heal me?" Velvette asked.

"Oh, I didn't." Emily said, shaking her head.

Velvette gave Emily the blankest stare possible, slowly inhaling through her nose and blowing cigarette smoke right out.

"So you mean to tell me you went in blind and just hoped it would all work in the end like a wanker?" She asked, raising a brow.

"I don't know what a wanker is but yeah." Emily said, not knowing if she was insulted or not. "I was very limited with options. If it failed, you would've died and if I did nothing, you would've die too."

"Okay but one more thing. Why?" Velvette asked.

"Cuz you showed that you ARE a good person. You could've let Lucy die but you saved her." Emily said with a smile.

"I mean, yeah. Who the fuck just lets a kid die?" Velvette retorted, shrugging like it was no big deal.

"Exorcists apparently." Emily said.

"They shouldn't count. Exorcists are heartless, except the queen's wife." Velvette said, holding up her finger.

"Yeah, and they threw her out because of it." Emily said, grinning with mockery.

"And look how that turned out, she a queen now." Velvette said, also mocking Exorcsists.

"Yeah. They really fucked up." Emily said as they both chuckled.

They sat in silence after that, just smoking and gazing at the wall of the room.

"...How do you feel?" Emily asked.

"About?" Velvette replied.

"Everything really, not just about Valentino." Emily said.

"...I don't know, actually." Velvette said, holding up and looking at her hand. "At times, everything has just felt like a dream or a nightmare."

"Welcome to the Hazbin Hotel, where dreams and nightmares are made." Emily said, waving her hands to create a rainbow.

Which soon caught fire.

"You have a motto for everything, don't you?" Velvette asked.

"Possibly but moving on from that, are you happy that you got your revenge against Valentino?" Emily said, letting the rainbow fade.

"Yes...no...I don't really know. I thought it would feel better than this but it just feels...hollow." Velvette said, putting a hand on her heart.

"Maybe because you no longer have him around to hate or because thag hate in your heart faded away before you killed him." Emily said.

"I guess." Velvette said with a shrug. "To either, I suppose."

"Well, either way, I'm sure you'll find something to fill that void in your heart somehow. Most likely with something positive." Emily said with a supportive smile.

"Like what?" Velvette asked, almost finished with her cig.

"Like maybe...some love for Verosika?" Emily asked with a grin.

BAM! THUD!

-Some time later-

Opening her eyes, Emily looked around and found herself on the floor of Velvette's room. She also felt some dry blood running down her bruised nose.

"Sorry about that, not aware of how strong these arms actually are." Velvette said, now sitting on her bed and having the sloth cigs all to herself.

"It's fine. Not the first time I've woken up on the floor... won't be the last." Emily said, still lying on the floor.

And that thought made her want a beer. Maybe four.

"How long was I out after you punched me?" Emily asked.

"About 40 minutes. 41." Velvette said, finishing her 4th cigarette.

"Yeah, that sounds about. Wanna grab a beer?" Emily asked, leaning up.

"Sure. So long as it's imported." Velvette said.

And just like that, friendship is forged.
