Two Hours Later
My hands are shaking, they're drenched too. The only light that is left is the light at the end of the tunnel, the glowing outline of a box in the far distance. The outside, freedom. Something screeches behind me. I turn, knowing full well my eyes would be met with nothing more than the black hellhole I just managed to escape.
Chase is gone, Jasper too—it's only me left, only me to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As I stand still the moisture from my hands drips and splatters on the rocky surface. I know that fluid isn't water. The smell is much too salty for that. It's blood—my blood. I'm not a hundred percent sure what happened back there. In fact, a lot of my memory seems to be missing, but now I can see the light at the end, an exit, an exit I thought I'd never find.
I limp towards it slowly, my leg hurt, my arm is cut, and I feel light-headed. The screech happens again. I don't even turn around. The darkness isn't kind on my eyes and I want nothing to do with it.
Step after step, I draw closer and closer until I'm right under the light, right under the bright square. It's a trapdoor, a wooden hatch, and it's above me. My hands go forward and touch a ladder directly in front of me, something I couldn't see in the darkness. A flash, a memory, something recent.
It's me screaming. I have Chase's hands in mine. His blue eyes are looking right back at me, but there's not much life left in them. His fingers aren't squeezing back anymore. I'm crying. I'm screaming. The sound of tearing flesh fills the void. Warm briny air comes after and his fingers slip in mine. His body is dragged under the wall into a small opening.
I cry, sucking in the salty air as my fingers wrap around a timber beam. Shaking, I lead my fingers up to some kind of old lantern we had found earlier. I flick it back on; to find the hole he was pulled into is gone, like a trapdoor has closed. I continue to sob and shake as I take my hand off the beam and look towards the other side of the room.
I'm back, the memory gone, but tears are running down my cheeks again, even if I'm not actually sad anymore. I put my other hand on the ladder and ascend. So many terrible things happened down there and now I'm the only one left. Jasper, Chase, Emily... they're all dead. I push against the hatch and sunlight floods in.
My eyes quickly dilate in response and I temporarily go blind with the extreme change. I squeeze my eyes shut and pull myself up and out. I'm unable to see where I am, but as I climb out into the fresh air I feel my body collapse over rocks and roll onto grass. I open my eyes and stare up at shadows created by the surrounding trees, and at rays of light flooding down into my unprepared eyes.
A blurry face appears above me. It's a blond haired girl, short with a filthy white tank top and jeans. I breathe slowly and watch the face. She found me... it found me... so I didn't escape after all, I wasn't able to get away, and I thought I was finally free.
The face, the girl, she smiles down at me and reaches her hand out to mine. I shade my eyes with one hand and reach the other up. I forget which one I put up for her. She grabs without looking, feels the moisture, and screams, "What the fuck is that Jenny!" letting go. She moves away flapping her hand as if to fling all the blood off it. I help myself up, only able to get myself into a seated position.
The fresh air is nice, the breeze is good, but I'm still weak and spooked. I can't see who it is too clear. I look at the girl, who's trying her best to wipe the blood off on the grass. "Emily?" I say, finally getting better vision on her. It is indeed her, she's alive and well, not even a scratch on her.
She has a smile on her face, but there's worry in her eyes, which keep looking over to my arm. "Yeah, of course, how was the 'cave'?"
She gives me a smirk but keeps her eyes on my arm. She can see the large gash on my shoulder and how my sleeve has been nearly torn off. Something must have cut me there, but I don't remember what.
"What happened down there? You get scared?" There is a tease in her voice, "Where are the boys? Still sitting in a corner shitting themselves? We should let them sweat it out an hour or two longer before we go back and turn the lights on."
I don't find what she's trying to say funny at all. In fact, I hardly even look at her and stare off into the wilderness. My eyes slowly go up to hers and connect. I stare into her brown pupils for some while, silent. She doesn't speak either.
Finally, after what seems like minutes, I say, "They're dead."
Emily still has a smirk on her face, "No, they're not." It's a half smile now.
I stand up. I can see perfectly fine now because my eyes adjusted to the light. I move right in front of Emily and tilt my head, keeping my eyes on hers, "She bashed Jasper's skull in right in front of me, Chase got ripped in half as he was holding my hands. I saw the life drain from his eyes as his grip slowly slipped."
"Who Jenny? Who? There was no one else down there." Emily looked from the left to the right, "Stop messing around, it was a joke, a fucking joke. There's no one down there. The place was a haunted house, my dad went through when he was a kid. He told me everything. I went down a few days ago and set it up. I'm surprised the thing still had electricity. There's no one down there. I was just trying to scare you guys."
I look passed Emily, over her shoulder. There's something in the far distance, a figure, a male figure. The figure is too far to see clearly. It vanishes. I look at Emily and then back over her shoulder to see the figure reappear, but much closer, next to a different tree. "She found me. She said she would find me. I should have known I couldn't escape, I should have known..."
"Who, who found you, Jenny? You're freaking me out."
I look down at the grass and slowly lower myself to my knees. I look back up to Emily then lean to look around her. The figure is even closer now. I'm not going to run this time. I'm not going to escape. I'm just so damn tired. I'm just so damn tired of running, of losing everyone. It's time to accept my fate.
Emily turns around, "What do you keep looking at?"
I ignore the question, and start humming, "Pregonon uccidermi ti prego, nonmandarmi a quel... Pregonon uccidermi ti prego, nonmandarmi a quel..."
"Wait? What...?"
Emily looks behind her; she catches a glimpse of the figure. It's Jasper—or more so it was Jasper before she killed him. Now, I'm not sure what it is. I'm not sure what demon inhabits his body. It looks like an arm is missing, his eyes are glowing red, and his face and body are covered in blood. His shirt is gone, replaced with a heavy old leather jacket covered in dried blood. He smiles and crooked yellow teeth fill his mouth, these teeth are stained red as if he has just devoured flesh, like he has just devoured Chase.
"Is that Jasper? What's going on? Jenny? Jenny?" Emily pleads.
I continue, chanting now, "Pregonon uccidermi ti prego, nonmandarmi a quell... Pregonon uccidermi ti prego, nonmandarmi a quell... Pregonon uccidermi ti prego, nonmandarmi a quell..."
"What the hell are you saying? Jenny!" I reach down and start pulling at my top. I pull hard, so hard the buttons begin to snap, exposing the bare skin underneath. I keep pulling until my blouse is entirely ripped open, showing my bra to Emily. "Jenny, what are you doing? What's going on?" there's panic on her face and she keeps turning to look behind her for what used to be Jasper.
I chant again, louder and faster, "Pregonon uccidermi ti prego, nonmandarmi a quell... Pregonon uccidermi ti prego, nonmandarmi a quell... Pregonon uccidermi ti prego, nonmandarmi a quell..."
I start to dig my fingernails into my stomach, pushing them harder and harder against my flesh until it becomes red and sore.
"Jenny, talk to me, English!" She's almost yelling now and I can tell she is unsure whether to kneel down and stop me or just sprint in one direction as far away as she can.
I feel my fingers puncture the skin and sweet, sweet blood cover them. I look up, "Please, please..." My voice is shaking, "Please don't kill me, please don't send me to hell..."
I ignore the pain and keep tearing at my own flesh, slowly ripping my stomach open further. Emily drops down next to me and tries to get me to stop. I use one bloody hand to push her away.
"No!" I scream. Guts start to come out of the opening I created and I fall backwards, lightheaded at what I just did. "Leave me Emily, let me go, she already has me. Save yourself... save yourself." My breaths become short and shallow, "Come, come here." I hardly speak. She comes and puts her ear up to my mouth. I whisper, "When he chases you run. When he catches you, die."
I look up at Emily's face, probably for the last time, as I feel myself grow faint from my self-inflicted wound.
"Okay," her voice is weak and frail now. I can hear the terror and confusion in it.
I smile, and look up, behind her again. That thing, the monster which took Jasper's body, is there. It's standing over me, standing over us. He's still now. His breathing is so quiet not even Emily can hear him. But he's there, watching Emily with her ear pressed against my face. With all my strength I speak up, "Behind you."
Emily holds her breath and lifts her ear away from my face. She slowly turns her head. Those red eyes are staring down at her. He's so close he could touch her. He could grab her right now. Her lower lip starts shaking. Her eyes expand in fear. She locks up. The monster opens its mouth wide, hungry for human flesh and reaches its one good arm for Emily, for her hair. It is going to go for her neck, to rip it up and let her bleed out a slow, painful death.
"Run!" I scream through all the pain. Every ounce of my body wants to just give up and die, "Run!" I yell even louder one final time.
Emily snaps out of her coma, stands up, and speeds away. The monster doesn't chase, instead it looks down at me. It looks at the open cavity that is my stomach. It smiles. I smile back. It opens its mouth and descends on me.
Its hand goes into the crevice I created and pulls. He tugs at the insides of the sacrificial lamb, of me. I look up, letting my vision set on the fleeing shadow of Emily as she grows further and further away. She turns around to see the monster tearing my insides out and shoving them into its mouth. Chase, I'm coming...
Black, heavy darkness, finally peace... finally... freedom.
