✏️ How to Draw: Improved Dragon
Sorry I haven't been updating recently, I've had a time period of low confident in my artwork. So, finally I saw an art book full of tips here on Wattpad, that I've added to my great art book reading list. Basically, I found someone in a similar age as myself and their booked kind of helped me understand that I'm still learning and I expected myself to be much better than the level I'm at, which wasn't fair to myself.
So I basically am doing something about it. I am taking their advice, and I am going to grow my skills where I want to grow them by practice. Using a reference, which I rarely do, I am starting to understand it isn't as hard as I originally thought!
Here is my step by step tutorial of how I turned my artwork and improved it. I won't show level of difficulty or the final product at the top of this page, because I know better than some how that can unmotivated to be better.
Here we go, Step 1: Draw the basic shape of your dragon, without limbs. Sketch skeletal structure.
My personal goal today was to make my dragon more realistic, and with more muscle definition to it didn't look so flat. I find sketching the skeletal structure out first helps make sure your joints and position is natural.
Step 2: Find what about the reference I want to change about my art.
I wanted mine to look more realistic, anatomically. I outlined the joints in my reference picture below, and then drew that onto my dragon with my style's modifications.
Step 3: Continue changing joints in the wings.
Step 4: Use a third color to outline the whole idea.
Remove everything else for the outline to stand out with your finished idea.
Step 5: Add details and finish, even if it's as a rough sketch. I used the reference again to find and highlight the muscle definition.
Step 6: Color!
What do you guys think? Did I improve in terms of anatomy and realism? Here it is compared to one of my older pieces...
