chapter 25
The clanging of metal echoed through the workshop as Arjun hammered away at a piece of machinery, his focus unwavering. The room was filled with the scent of burning oil and the low hum of gears turning. Arjun, now 20, had grown into a man with sharp features and a determined spirit. His hands, once small and delicate, were now calloused from years of hard work. Yet, beneath the tough exterior, there was a deep, unspoken sadness—a longing that he had carried with him for six long years.
Arjun wiped the sweat from his brow, pausing for a moment to catch his breath. The room around him was cluttered with blueprints, tools, and half-finished inventions. Every piece of equipment, every drawing, was a part of his grand plan—a plan to bring his sister, Meera, back.
“Where are you, Didi?” Arjun muttered under his breath, his voice tinged with frustration and sorrow. He hadn’t stopped thinking about her since the day she vanished. The memory of her disappearance was seared into his mind, a haunting reminder of the sister he had lost.
They had been so close. Meera had been more than just a sister; she had been his confidant, his partner in mischief, and his guide. They had shared countless adventures, from exploring hidden passages in the palace to uncovering ancient relics that had long been forgotten. It was during one of those explorations that she had disappeared.
Arjun still remembered that day vividly. They had found the secret passageway, excited to see where it led. The thrill of discovery had filled the air, and they had ventured deeper and deeper into the hidden corridors. But then, the unthinkable had happened. Meera had fallen into a deep, ancient well, and no one had been able to rescue her.
For years, Arjun had been tormented by that memory, by the sound of her voice echoing as she fell, by the helplessness he had felt as he tried to save her. He had searched endlessly, scoured every inch of the palace and its surroundings, but Meera had vanished without a trace. It was as if the earth itself had swallowed her whole.
But Arjun refused to give up. He had vowed to bring her back, no matter what it took. He had thrown himself into his studies, learning everything he could about science, engineering, and the ancient texts that spoke of time and space. He had become obsessed with the idea that Meera hadn’t just disappeared—she had been transported to another time, another world.
“Time is just another dimension,” Arjun would tell himself late at night as he pored over ancient scrolls and mathematical equations. “If she can cross it, so can I.”
His relentless pursuit of knowledge had led him to this moment. The workshop was filled with contraptions of his own design—machines that could measure the flow of time, devices that could manipulate energy fields, and complex mechanisms that Arjun believed would one day open a portal to wherever Meera was. It was his life’s work, his mission.
But as the years passed, doubt had started to creep in. What if he never found her? What if she was lost forever? These thoughts haunted him, driving him to work harder, to push himself to the brink of exhaustion. He couldn’t bear the thought of failing her.
Arjun’s hand trembled as he adjusted a small dial on one of his devices. He hadn’t slept properly in days, but he couldn’t stop. The memories of their childhood together fueled him—Meera’s laughter, her encouragement, the way she had always believed in him. He couldn’t let her down.
“Just a little longer, Didi,” Arjun whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the machinery. “I’m close. I know I am.”
He reached for a piece of parchment and began sketching out a new design, his mind racing with ideas. Every calculation, every line drawn, brought him one step closer to his goal. The hope that had sustained him for so long was dim, but it was still there, flickering like a candle in the dark.
Arjun knew that the world saw him as obsessed, perhaps even mad. But they didn’t understand. They didn’t know what it was like to lose someone so dear, to have them ripped away without warning. He couldn’t move on, not until he had exhausted every possibility, explored every avenue.
As the night wore on, Arjun continued to work, his eyes red with fatigue, but his determination unwavering. The moonlight streamed through the small windows of the workshop, casting long shadows on the walls. It was in these quiet moments, when the world was asleep, that Arjun felt closest to Meera—as if she were just beyond the veil, waiting for him to find her.
He paused for a moment, looking at the blueprint in front of him. This design felt different, more promising. His heart quickened with the thought that maybe, just maybe, this would be the one that would finally bring her back.
“Wait for me, Didi,” Arjun said softly, his voice filled with a mix of hope and desperation. “I’m coming to find you. I promise.”
And with that, he returned to his work, the determination in his heart burning brighter than ever before.
