Chapter 13

Beneath the soft glow of candlelight, Lucas's fingers brushed against Evelyn's as they carefully placed the final crystal into the intricate pattern laid out before them. Their gazes met, and in that moment, a wordless understanding passed between them – their love was the beacon that would guide them through this darkness.

"Alright," Lily said, her voice steady and resolute. "We're ready to begin the ritual."

Lucas and Evelyn nodded, their hands clasping tightly together, their hearts beating in unison. As Lily began to recite the ancient words, the air around them seemed to hum with energy, every syllable resonating with the power of ages past.

"Focus on your love, and step into the circle" Lily instructed, her eyes locked onto the shimmering crystals. "Let it fill your entire being, and let it flow into the circle we've created."

With a step forward Lucas closed his eyes, he could feel the warmth of Evelyn's hand in his own, the steady rhythm of her pulse echoing his own. Their love was an unbreakable bond, forged in the fires of adversity and tempered by the depths of their devotion. Together, they channeled that love into the ritual, their hearts and souls united as one.

Evelyn's thoughts swirled with memories of their time together – stolen moments beneath the stars, whispered words of love in the stillness of the night. Her heart swelled with the knowledge that their love had brought them to this point, that they were standing side by side in defiance of the darkness that sought to tear them apart.

"Concentrate on the Reaper of Love," Lily continued, her voice rising and falling in harmony with the pulsing energy that filled the room. "Envision her standing before us, hear her words of wisdom, feel her presence in our midst."

Lucas imagined the Reaper of Love, her form bathed in the soft radiance of countless stars, her eyes filled with the wisdom and understanding of a thousand lifetimes. He could almost see her reaching out to them, her hands extended in a gesture of protection and guidance.

Evelyn pictured the Reaper's gentle smile, her ethereal beauty a testament to the power of love itself. She envisioned the ancient deity standing between them and the darkness, her presence a shield against the malice that threatened their world.

"Bring her forth!" Lily cried, as the last word of the ritual echoed through the room.

The energy surrounding the circle surged, swirling around Lucas and Evelyn like an invisible tempest. The crystals began to vibrate, their shimmering light growing brighter and more intense with each passing moment. And then, with a final, resounding pulse, the storm subsided, leaving only the faintest trace of its power lingering in the air.

"Did it work?" Lucas asked, his voice barely above a whisper, as he looked around the room in search of any indication that the ritual had been successful.

"I don't think it did," Lily responded softly, her eyes reflecting a mixture of sadness and uncertainty. "But we have enough minerals to try this one more time. I will study the circle and see what went wrong so that we might get it right next time. We will try it in the stone circle in the garden next time"

As Lucas and Evelyn stepped away from the now still circle, they couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of unity and determination. Whatever challenges lay ahead, they knew that they would face them together, their love a force as powerful and unstoppable as the tides themselves.

As the sun dipped low in the sky, casting a warm golden glow over the garden, Lucas, Evelyn, and Lily stood at the center of a meticulously prepared circle. Flowers and herbs surrounded them, their delicate petals caught in the last rays of sunlight, while candles flickered like tiny beacons of hope.

"Alright," Lily said, her hands shaking slightly as she held the ritual parchment. "Let's try this again." She began to chant the ancient words, her voice clear and resonant, filling the air with an almost palpable energy.

Lucas and Evelyn exchanged a nervous glance, their fingers intertwining as they braced themselves for the unknown. The air around them seemed to hum with anticipation, the very earth beneath their feet vibrating with power

But as the ritual reached its crescendo, something went wrong. The world around them fell silent, the energy dissipating as if it had never been there at all. A heavy sense of disappointment settled over them like a cold, damp blanket.

"Did... did it work?" Evelyn asked hesitantly, her eyes searching for any sign that the Reaper of Love had heard their plea.

Lily frowned, her brow furrowing as she turned the parchment over in her hands, studying the ancient script. "I don't understand," she muttered, frustration creeping into her voice. "Everything was perfect. What could we have missed?"

"Wait," Lucas said suddenly, his gaze falling on the flowers encircling them. "This looks almost like... a wedding ceremony."

"That's it!" Lily exclaimed, her eyes lighting up with realization. "You two must kiss to complete the ritual! Of course, it's a ritual of love – it makes perfect sense!"

Without hesitation, Lucas and Evelyn leaned towards each other, their lips meeting in a tender, passionate embrace. The moment their lips touched, the world around them seemed to explode with light and energy, the very air shimmering with a thousand vibrant hues.

And there, in the heart of that radiant storm, stood Aria – the Reaper of Love. Her ethereal beauty was breathtaking, her form surrounded by a gentle aura of shimmering light.

"By the stars," she whispered, her voice like a soft, lilting melody. "It has been centuries since I have been summoned to officiate the union of two souls. Only the purest of love can call upon me."

As Aria completed the unexpected wedding ceremony, her hands weaving intricate patterns in the air, Lucas, Evelyn, and Lily stared at her in shock. They had never intended to wed, but it seemed fate had other plans.

"Wait," Lily interjected once Aria had finished, urgency tingeing her words. "We called you here because of the danger Evelyn and Lucas are in. The Reaper of Hate is after them!."

Aria nodded solemnly, her eyes filled with understanding as she turned to look at Evelyn and Lucas. "I have been watching over you both since your journey began in the woods. While your love strengthens me, I am not yet powerful enough to confront my dark counterpart. But I can do this." With a flick of her wrist, she summoned two dazzling wedding rings, their bands twisting into an unbreakable knot that represented the unbreakable bond of love now between Lucas and Evelyn. The gems glimmered with an otherworldly light, as if imbued with the power of eternal love itself.

"These will shield you from the vengeful grasp of Corvus Nightshade, the bringer of eternal hatred, and may your love be a beacon of hope in these dark times," Aria said, her voice gentle yet determined. As she began to fade, she added, "Prepare yourselves, for great change is coming."

The sense of relief and hope that washed over Lucas, Evelyn, and Lily was palpable, their hearts swelling with newfound courage. They knew that they had taken a significant step towards safeguarding each other.

Aria the Reaper of Love stepped out of the portal and into the ethereal realm, her form flickering like a candle near its end. She found herself in an ancient hall where a grand table stood, surrounded by thrones for each of the Reapers. The air hummed with power, yet the hall lay silent and empty, save for one other presence.

As soon as Aria's feet touched the ground, she crumpled, her strength waning. Her once vibrant essence seemed to fade in and out of existence, as if on the verge of being snuffed out entirely. It was then that the Reaper of Life rushed to her side, concern etched across her ageless face.

"Dear sister, what has happened?" the Reaper of Life asked, her voice laced with fear as she helped Aria to her feet. "You look as though you're fading away!"

Aria's voice trembled as she spoke, the strain of her words evident in the gasping breaths between them. "The rings... for Evelyn and Lucas..." she struggled to continue, her eyes blazing with determination. "It drained me... nearly all my strength. But it was necessary... to... to protect them from Corvus." Her hands were trembling as she lifted them to reveal the two pale lines where rings used to be. Her fingers were now bare, devoid of any adornment.

The Reaper of Life's eyes widened, realizing the sacrifice Aria had made to protect the young couple's love. She guided her weakened sister to her throne, careful not to let Aria slip from her grasp. As Aria settled into the seat, the Reaper of Life's gaze bore into her, searching for any hint of reassurance.

"Was it worth it?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Aria managed a weak smile, her eyes shimmering with determination. "Their love... is more powerful than we can fathom. In time, it will help me regain my strength. We must believe in them, sister."

"Very well," the Reaper of Life said, nodding solemnly. "I trust your wisdom, Aria. I just hope their love is enough to protect them from the darkness that seeks to consume them."

"Have faith," Aria whispered in response, her voice growing fainter. "Unbeknownst to them...they now wear...the rings of love. Great change is coming... and with it, a new hope."

The form of the Reaper of Love flickered once again, her essence slowly fading away like an ember struggling against the darkness. The Reaper of Life watched with a heavy heart, filled with uncertainty and sorrow. Aria was once the strongest among them, even to the point where the other Reapers tried to overthrow her seat of power in their early years. But she proved herself to be above them all, defeating them effortlessly as if they were mere children.

Yet, she did not destroy them for their actions. Instead, she helped each one of them find their true role as Reapers and brought out powers they never knew they had. She asked for nothing in return, only saying "I am the Reaper of love, it is my role to help and support you all in finding what you truly love." And now, here she is, the weakest of them all struggling to hold her form. But there is nothing she can do to help her in her search for love.

None of them can stand against Corvus with ease, especially now that Hector, the Reaper of War, has been by his side for centuries. Aria was the only one with the strength to defeat Hector, but now that too seems impossible.
