four; the mattress

On the ride to Vienna, after each other them changed to look less suspicious, Steve told Lara all about how Hydra use Bucky as their slave. How he assassinated people, the Starks to be more specific, and Lara starred at him dumbfounded. Obviously, Bucky had been under the influence of Hydra when he had killed the Starks, because Howard had been a friend of Bucky's, but it still hurt to hear about it.

Howard had helped Lara so much.

When she got out of her shock, Lara starred out the window of the quin-jet, thinking about it. Her heart hurt thinking about Bucky, and all the pain and misery that he had been through. But then, she realized, that everyone was given their lives because they were strong enough to live them.

Lara and Sam, decked out in their baseball caps and sunglasses as well as jeans, shirts, and jackets, were sitting in a café while Steve called Natasha. Lara had ordered a drink so they looked less suspicious, and smiled cheerfully as the hot chocolate was placed in front of her.

"So you like hot cocoa?" Sam asked, staring at the cup that was in Lara's hands.

"Yeah. My mom used to make it whenever I was sad. And when my father decided that his life wasn't worth living anymore in the period you know as The Great Depression, I drank hot chocolate for a month. My sister had her first child on the way. Wesley is still one of the most attractive men I know," Lara explained. She had cried too much over her father, and a long time ago had decided that she wasn't going to cry about it anymore. Hell, after she had started working with the children, and teaching, her father had completely left her mind until that happened.

Though, she did remember crying the one night she had wrote James about not twirling around on her father's feet as a little girl. Her father had died when she was in her teenage years, but he had been very busy trying to bring capital into the house. Don't get me wrong, he was a very happy man. Just busy. And when poverty struck the family, well, he blamed himself.

"I'm sor-" Lara gave Sam a look, telling him not to finish that sentence. She didn't need his sympathy. Lara had gotten enough of that when her father had first died way back then.

Sam called the barista back, ordering a small snack as Lara took another sip out of her cup. The chocolate flavour tickled her taste buds, making her smile. There was even a hint of cinnamon in the cocoa, making Lara smile. She had ordered it specifically, and missed the taste. The last time she had some hot chocolate was... Well, she couldn't remember.

Sam was almost done eating when Steve walked back into the café. Lara's empty cup sat in front of her, looking small. When the tall man was beside them, Sam glanced over, as did Lara. "She tell you to stay out of it?" When Steve didn't answer him, Sam gave Lara a little smirk as if saying called it. "Might have a point."

"He'd do it for me," Steve argued, looking around the shop. They were waiting on whatever information that Sharon could get them.

"1945, maybe. I just wanna make sure we consider all our options," Sam said, and Lara rolled her eyes. "The people that shoot at you usually wind up shooting at me."

"We're going to get him," Lara told Sam. "I can help him. He needs us."

Steve gave Sam a smirk for his comment, before Lara noticed that Sharon had joined the trio. "Ever since that footage went live tips have been pouring in. Everyone thinks The Winter Soldier goes to their gym. Most of it's noise," Sharon slid a thin document to Steve. "Except for this." When it was safely in Steve's hands, Sharon spoke up again, "My boss expects a briefing pretty much right now, so that's all of the story you're gonna get."

"Thank you," Steve told the blonde woman.

"And you're gonna have to hurry, we have orders to shoot on sight," with that, Sharon walked away from the counter, making her way out of the café.

"Are you guys ready to actually be vigilantes?" Lara asked, smirking slightly at the thought. She thought it was cool, because Nick didn't really let her use her powers. Something about waiting for the right opportunity. Though, it had obviously been changed as soon as he had found out that Hydra was still very much alive.

"Lara, please don't say it like that," Steve said, reading over the information Sharon had gave them. The smile that had been on Lara's face dropped a little, and she wished she had more hot chocolate. That would make her feel better.

"Oh, Steve, don't ruin the girls fun. This has never happened to her in all of her seventy lives," Sam said, and Lara shot him a glare. Lara knew that Steve rolled his eyes at the two, before taking a step away from the counter. Lara followed, then Sam, all leaving at different times.

When they all met up, Lara shoved on Sam's shoulder. "Hey, I have more life experience then you ever will."

Bucharest. That's where Bucky was. Or, at least, that's what the file had told Steve, Lara, and Sam. They had taken the quin-jet again, thankful that Sam could actually fly the thing. Though, Lara knew they would probably ditch the thing when they got Bucky. Why? It was a little obvious for them to be flying in it.

Steve and Lara split up from Sam, who had gotten his bird costume wings on. He was waiting on the roof while Lara and Steve snuck up to the apartment Bucky was staying in. It was a small apartment, being one room with a connected bathroom.

While Steve, who was now dressed up in his Captain America suit, stayed looking around, Lara went to rummage through some of the stuff. There was papers beside the mattress, and curiously, Lara picked them up. Her eye brows furrowed when she noticed that they was a picture of her from a newspaper article. It was from the helicarrier disaster, and she looked horrible in it, but the sentiment was there. The paper under it was something about Captain America.

She flipped through the rest, most of them just saying stuff about the Avengers, or some world issue, before Lara stopped at the last paper. Her eyebrows furrowed even more as she looked at the letter, who own penmanship distinguishable.

When is a monster not a monster?
When you love it.

Lara blinked, putting the papers back down before wandering to the small kitchen area. She looked at the dirty fridge, but other then that the place was quite clean. The only thing that made the fridge dirty was all the dirt and stuff clinging to the outside of it.

Lara watched as Steve picked up a journal, tipping the two chocolate bars that were on it back onto the fridge. Since the fridge was quite short, Lara could understand why Bucky decided to use it as a place to put some stuff. He flipped through the book as Lara ruffled through some stuff on the kitchen counter.

"Heads up, Cap and Roth, German Special Forces approaching from the South," Lara heard in her ear, knowing it was Sam. They had been pretty lucky to find an extra communicator in the quin-jet, or else Lara probably would have just listened to Cap.

"Understood."

If the mood hadn't been so serious, Lara probably would have made a Roger That! pun, but she's pretty sure Steve would have been really angry with her. So, Lara kept her mouth shut, and kept ruffling through the stuff on the counter.

From her peripheral, Lara watched as Steve turned around. Lara felt her body tense as she stood up straighter, but didn't turned around like the patriot. "You know me?"

"You're Steve," Lara closed her eyes when she heard Bucky's voice, the sweet melody she missed so much. "I read about you in a museum."

"They've set the perimeter," Sam said in their ears.

Lara finally turned around, stepping closer to Steve. "Cap, we gotta go." She made the mistake of looking at Bucky. She froze for a split second, looking at him. His hair was longer, and he had stubble now. He also seemed to be more muscular than he had been before, but it was still the same voice, same lips, same nose, same eyes. It was still her Bucky.

He was just a little broken. Nothing that she couldn't fix.

"Lara," it came out as a whisper as Bucky had seemed to take her in as well. She nodded her head, but her eyebrows furrowed when Bucky gulped noticeably. The female wondered why.

"I know you're nervous," Steve cut off the two's staring contest, taking steps forward.

"And you have every right to be," Lara added onto Steve's sentence, following after the Avenger and taking a step forward.

"But, you're lying."

"I wasn't in Vienna," Bucky said, his eyes solely fixated on Lara. "I don't do that anymore."

"They are entering the building." Sam.

"Well, the people who think you did are coming here now, and they aren't planning on taking you alive," Steve explained as he got closer to Bucky yet again. He was obviously getting ready to act on instinct if he has to.

"That's smart, good strategy," Bucky said, and Lara raised her eyebrows. It was her Bucky, but he was different now. Well, more different then she expected.

"They are on the roof. I'm compromised."

"This doesn't have to end in a fight, Buck," Steve said, now standing his ground as Bucky moved from his spot beside the bed.

"It always ends in a fight."

"Five seconds."

"You pulled me from the river!" Steve said, and Lara watched as Bucky took off his left hand's glove, eyes widening at the sight. His hand wasn't the normal skin colour it used to be, it was shining silver in the dim light. "Why?"

"I don't know."

"Three seconds!"

"Yes, you do."

"Breach, breach, breach!"

Lara was pushed out of the way when a grenade was thrown into the window, landing in the arms of James Buchanan Barnes. He looked at her wide eyed before he threw her on the bed and kicked another grenade thrown through the window towards Steve, who covered it with his shield.

"Get off the mattress," Bucky said, and Lara felt her eyes widen as she panicked, teleporting behind Steve.

Bucky stared at her wide eyed before picking up the mattress, using it to block a gun shot through the window.
