chapter nine

Another ad-lib chapter for ya! Are you guys enjoying this story?

I was seriously considering making this chapter go a completely different direction but alas I decided to stick with my original plan for the story.

Happy Harbor

September 07, 07:58 EDT

"Ugh, do we really need to go to school?" Pietro groaned, walking behind M'gann and the newly dubbed Conner with Wanda. "I'm pretty sure Wanda, Conner, and myself learned everything we needed to know from the genomorphs."

"Pietro, it is for socialization and to give us a break from the you know what." Wanda whispered. "We can't have our whole lives revolve around the team. That's not healthy."

"But I don't want to be a freshman in high school. That is the lowest level of the food chain. Especially if they don't know you have super powers." Pietro mumbled, crossing his arms with a pout.

"That's the whole point of a secret identity, people can't know you have super powers." Wanda felt a migraine coming on.

Conner grabbed a kid off the back of a skate board, lifting him in the air and pointing at his T-shirt. "Explain this."

"What's your problem?" A teen nearby asked, looking at the quartet. "Put my man Marvin, down."

"I-I don't think he likes my shirt." The boy in Conner's hand stuttered out.

Conner looked around at everyone's shirts, noticing they all had on super hero logos. He grit his teeth. "Your shirts fine. Everyone's shirts fine." He dropped the kid.

"Someone's fine." The girl next to the teen that called Conner out spoke, looking him up and down. The boy started to approach them.

M'gann started to introduce herself to the boy, Marvin. "Hi, we're new. I'm Megan Morse. This is Conner Kent and our friends, Pietro and Wanda Maximoff."

Conner walked up to the meet the teen, staring him down. Another guy snapped his fingers in their faces. "Okay, time to get to home room, gang."

The teen brushed past Conner, bumping his shoulder into Conner's. Conner grunted, going to follow him until M'gann and Wanda stepped in his path.

Conner, no.

"Hi, I'm Wendy. I was new last year so I know how hard it is to fit in." A girl with black hair and blue eyes approached the quartet. She turned to M'gann. "But you look like instant Bumblebee material to me. Cheerleaders. The Bumblebees. Tryouts are after school."

That sounds exhausting. Don't sign me up.

"Thanks! I'll be there!" M'gann walked off with Wendy, leaving Pietro, Wanda, and Conner to head to homeroom by themselves.

The three of them walked away and into the building, splitting up as Conner was signed up as a sophomore and the twins were freshmen. The twins made their way to homeroom, settling in next to each other and thanking the principal that they managed to get almost the same schedule. The class slowly trickled in around them and attendance was taken before they were sent to their first period classes, both were in Algebra together.

"Alright, class, I will be assigning seats as I want you to get to know each other." Everyone groaned as the teacher divided people up, Wanda and Pietro being separated. They looked out the window, bored out of their minds as this was child's play to them. "Ms. Maximoff, do you mind answering the question?"

Wanda gulped, turning to face the board. "Um..." She hadn't heard the question, so she quickly used her telepathy to read the teacher's mind to get the question. "X equals negative two?"

"Correct. Moving on..."

Wanda put her chin in her hand, doodling on a piece of paper as she waited for the bell to ring.

Are you as bored as I am?

Can't you tell?

I wish an assassin would attack, spice things up a bit.

Pietro, why would an assassin attack a high school in Rhode Island?

Cheshire did.

Yeah, because we were hiding a scientist here that the Shadows had hired her to kill. She doesn't make it a habit to attack random teenagers.

How do you know?

Because that would be a weird habit. Now focus, the teacher just called on you.

Crap, what's the question?

Like I was paying attention!

Wanda snickered as Pietro fumbled for the answer, sobering up when the teacher looked at her. "What's so funny, Ms. Maximoff?"

"Um, nothing."

"Were you laughing at Mr. Maximoff's struggle? Because if you were that would be considered bullying and we take bullying very seriously here."

"He's my brother." Wanda muttered, crossing her arms.

"Pardon?"

"Er, nothing." Wanda blushed, feeling the whole class stare at her.

Help me out!

Why? You are bullying me.

Pietro!

"I'm sorry, Ms. Maximoff, but I'm afraid I am going to have to give you a detention."

Wanda felt her mouth drop. She turned to glare at Pietro as he snickered in his head.

The bell rang and they moved throughout the day until it came time for lunch. The twins made their way to the cafeteria, finding Conner and M'gann easily enough. They sat down with them, pulling out the bagged lunches M'gann had made for them.

"So, how is your day going?" M'gann asked, biting into her sandwich.

"Wanda has detention for bullying me." Pietro laughed when Wanda punched his arm. "See? She can't help but do it."

"Just wait until we get to the cave, brother, just you wait." Wanda threatened, taking a sip of her water.

"Why? So you can bully me in front of all our friends?"

"I don't know how I put up with you." Wanda groaned. "What am I going to do? First day of school and I already have detention. What if I can't go on missions now? What happens? Do I get suspended from the team?"

M'gann put her hand on Wanda's. "Wanda, you are a powerhouse, there is no way they would suspend you for getting one detention."

"I hope so."

The rest of the day went by uneventfully, up until Wanda made her way to the detention room. She slipped inside, giving her slip to the detention hall monitor before taking her seat. She noticed she was one of the only ones in the room and groaned, dropping her head onto the desk.

Pietro, I may actually kill you for getting me sent to this torture.

Sorry, this line has been disconnected. Please try again another time.

Brother, I swear one of these days...

Pietro just laughed through the link and Wanda stared at the clock, watching as the hour slowly ticked by. Finally, she was free to go. She made her way to the cave as fast as she could, bursting inside to see the team was all there, minus Aqualad. She glared at Pietro, throwing a psionic ball of energy at him.

"You're a jerk!" Wanda yelled as Pietro yelped, zipping out of the way of her power. "I had to watch as Eric clipped his toenails on the desk. It was disgusting!"

"Next time don't bully me." Pietro stuck his tongue out.

Wanda rolled her eyes, walking off to her room. She got changed into her costume before making her way into the hallway, pausing when she felt her stomach upend itself. She ran back to her bathroom, barely making it to the toilet in time as her lunch and the entire content of her stomach came back up. She heaved for minutes afterwards, holding onto the side of the toilet for support.

When she was done, she rinsed out her mouth and brushed her teeth, willing the spots in her vision to go away. Wanda started to make her way back to the hall but wobbled, falling to the floor. She moaned as white hot pain coursed through her body, blinding her.

Wanda reached out through the mind link to let the team know she would not be able to make it to the next mission as she wasn't feeling well and Robin responded saying the next mission was only for Superboy and Miss Martian anyways, the rest of the team had training. Wanda let him know she wasn't going to training and locked her door using her red mist, dragging herself to her bed. She climbed under the covers as another flash of pain hit her. She didn't fight it when the darkness came for her, instead she welcomed it with open arms.
