Prologue
Two voices whispered their stories to the otherwise silent night, speaking their wonders and hopes, as if someone could hear them. A gentle breeze stirred up the branches and leaves of the surrounding fruit trees, letting them dance beautifully in the glow of the moon.
A pale hand reached up to tuck her swirling light brown hair behind an ear. Like the trees, the wind also played with the tattered ends of her robe, much like a kitten would with a ball of yarn. The thought struck her as funny, succeeding in making her eyes shimmer with laughter. Her robe was rather precious to her although the ends had become a bit torn. It was mainly purple and grey, with hints of black here and there. Yet the thing that really made it stand out was on the back. A strange light purple symbol adorned it, the words to describe it ever escaping. A soft sigh escaped her as she brought herself back on track.
She stood beside a small pond, upon which was a reflection of the moon. The beauty of the rippling image transfixed the girl. Until she regretfully averted her gaze. Soon she would have to return home, or risk worrying her friend. After a moment she closed her soft blue eyes, and let her mind run blank. She longed to talk to someone besides her friend, for just a moment. To tell them about herself, to get to know others. And so she spoke. She dreamed. And she wished. Pouring out her story to the ghosts and nonexistent.
"My name is Delphinium, and I live with my best friend Emerald, who I've known for as long as I can remember, in a little cabin that we made. We searched this new land that we found ourselves in, but our searches turned up nothing. We are truly alone. So we decided to name this place. We chose the name Elzwear, because we don't know where we are, and no one knows we're here. It's not as bad as one may think. This land is paradise. There's fruit trees everywhere, and fresh water as well. But there's something else. A strange power-if that makes any sense. It makes me feel brave when I'm scared, and happy when I'm sad. It fills this place with power, as if I can just reach out and take it. But I haven't been able to. Over the years we've grown and learned, but something strange occurred to me. This place is huge and we're the only ones here. That's not right! I faintly remember people. I don't know who they are but they were there! We can't be the only ones here. This paradise, just maybe isn't as it seems." Delphinium fell silent after saying her piece, letting herself relish in the nature that surrounded her for a moment. She knew that no one had heard her, yet it was as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. Her eyes opened as a faint smile found its way onto her expression. It was time to return home.
Meanwhile in a quaint little room stood a more tanned girl. With bold dark brown hair and striking green eyes. A worn maroon cardigan lay discarded on the wooden floor, seeing as she was getting ready for bed. Two things prevented her from this goal. The first was the fact that she was unwilling to skip saying goodnight to Delphinium before she slept, and the second was that her mind was to active. Her gaze wandered to the sole window in the room, peering out at the peaceful forest of fruit trees. Soon her friend would come wandering out of the woods and pass over the wooden bridge that hung over a small chasm.
After a moment she crossed to her bed, and sat on the green covers. She easily removed her worn yet sturdy brown boots and set them down beside her bed, before shifting so that she was laying down and staring up at the ceiling. Her mind refused to cease its train of thought. So in an attempt to clear her head she decided to speak her thoughts. After all Delphinium wasn't home to hear them, and no one else was around. Neither of them knew that they both had the same longing...But their wishes they knew where the same. Some to understand, and listen to their experience.
"My name is Emerald, and I live with my best friend Delphinium, who I've known for as long as I can remember, in a little cabin that we made. We just woke up here one day. I can remember it vaguely. We were children at the time, maybe six or so? But we've grown a lot since then. We're both sixteen now, I've kept count since we arrived. It's been ten years in the place we call Elzwear. This much time alone with your best friend may seem great, but it's not. The only way I got through it was my swords. I forge them, and I fight with them. I make each one unique. They're my babies. I've made my own little setup out back. Every day is the same thing eat, smelt, train, eat, sleep, and a little social interaction in between. But I have a feeling that we're not alone. I remember faces from when I was young. And I can't do anything but hope it's my parents. I need to find them, and this paradise is keeping me from them. It feels like a cage. So maybe, just maybe, this paradise isn't as it seems." The room seemed to echo with her heartfelt words even after she had finished. A weight seemed to be lifted, and she smiled. 'One day I will find you two.' She silently promised, envisioning her parents.
The sound of the front door told her that Delphinium was home, and soon another day in the land of Elzwear would begin. Another day of unanswered questions. Yet everything has an answer, and for those that are diligent there is hope that they can be found.
