Joel watched the house, watched the man in the kitchen.

Usually he'd just put a bullet through his head and be done, but he wanted that man to hurt like he did.

He froze when he saw a young girl walk into the kitchen, she was Sarah's age.

He started to regret his choices, he was a father, to a girl the same age as his Sarah was.

He watched as the girl walked back upstairs, he wanted to leave, but he couldn't.

He walked through the dry grass to the door, chuckling to himself about the man's stupidity of leaving the door unlocked.

He walked in silently, he had his plan playing out in his head.

He watched the man in the kitchen, watched as he lived his life like he didn't do anything wrong.

"You know...this house is lovely" he chuckled, leaning against the wall, the man spun around "how did you afford it Robert? Sarah's blood money?" He asked.

"Listen Joel, I didn't do any of that" Robert tried to reach for a knife, which Joel quickly stopped.

"So you didn't drive directly into my daughter?" Joel asked, Robert watched him.

"D-Do you want a deal? I took your girl, you can take mine" he offered "just take the girl, I won't even report her missing" Joel thought for a second.

He slowly walked upstairs, his eyes still on Robert as he walked.

He saw the girls room, it was easy to tell with 'Ellie' painted on the door, glow in the dark stars around it.

He opened the door slowly, the girl was asleep on her bed.

He'd made his choice.

He turned back to Robert, raising his gun and shooting him through the head.

He walked into the girls room, picking her up, he felt her cuddle against his chest.

He couldn't help but think about Sarah, he knew it wouldn't be the same, but he could start over. With a new girl, in a new city, no one would know them.

He walked downstairs with the girl in his arms, stepping over Robert's body and bringing her outside, a cold chill washing over them, the girl shivered in the cold, Joel smiled softly and wrapped the blanket around her.

"You're safe now darling"
