What Was Before
Me and Sophia were sitting on the porch steps of the house, waiting for when Rick, Hershel and Glenn would come back. "I miss it." Sophia said suddenly.
"Breakfast? I don't. Those eggs were not cooked right, let me tell you." I replied.
"No, not the eggs. I mean before." Sophia corrected.
"Before breakfast? I mean I was having this really great dream about Chris Evans to be fair." I nodded.
"I mean before the walkers. Before the dead started raising. Before we got lost in the woods. Before the CDC. Before the first camp in Atlanta." Sophia corrected.
"Oh." I realised. "Why though? I mean... What was before? For us, I mean."
"Jacob was alive." Sophia replied.
"But so was your dad." I pointed out. "So was the watching your mother in constant fear of a man she loved. Watching your brother slowly turn into your father. That wasn't a life."
"But watching my mother cry over her son is?... Seeing Jacob come out of the barn like that-" Sophia cut herself off and shook her head, looking down as she tried to hide the fact that she was fighting off tears.
"I didn't mean anything by it. What happened to Jacob... That wasn't right. Without your dad, I'm sure he would've grown up to be a good man. His time was cut too short and that isn't right." I responded.
"What was it like for you? Before, I mean. Did you have any other family?" Sophia questioned, changing the subject as she looked to me.
"Merle was the only person on my dad's side I ever met. Then he died... On my mum's side, it's a different story though. Her dad left when she was young, she hasn't heard from him since she was ten. Her mum, my abuela, died when I was six. She lived in the neighbourhood... But she acted a lot like my mum in all the worst ways, so I wasn't that broken up about it. My mum had a sister, Maria... But she died about a year before I was born so I never met her. She has a daughter though. Her name's Rosita. She's my cousin." I explained.
"What's Rosita like?" Sophia pushed.
I laughed. "She awesome. She's twenty-six, I think. She has a super busy life and lived all over America. Every summer, around my birthday she'd come visit for two weeks... There was this rich neighbourhood a few blocks away and they had a massive park. Every summer they'd throw this huge fair, rides, games, ya know? She'd always take me, and we'd do whatever I wanted. For two weeks, she'd hang out with me every single day and we'd always do something different. My mum loved Rosita, said that she's perfect so of course my mum acted like an angel in front of her. Rosita never suspected what my mum was doing, what she's really like. She met my dad a couple times, but her leaving and my dad arriving never really crossed paths."
"I wish I could've met her." Sophia said.
I looked down. "She's still out there. I know she is. I don't think anything could ever beat Rosita, she's too much of a badass." I responded causing Sophia to smile softly down at me. "So, what's your family like?"
"My mum's an only child. Her parents died when she was little, so she ended up in foster care. My dad had two parents and a brother. His parents cut contact with him and us when they realised he was hurting my mum, me and my brother. My dad's brother would come over every Christmas and birthdays. Him and my dad weren't very close, he knew what my dad was like. He even watched dad hit me once... But he didn't do anything. He just sort of rolled his eyes and looked away." Sophia told me while fiddling with the top of her cast.
"I'm sorry. None of you deserved to go through what Ed put you through." I said softly.
"You don't deserve what your mum still puts you through." Sophia looked to me. "Your face is still bruised and scarred, I bet your stomach is too."
"Probably." I nodded and let out a sigh.
"If she does it again, you have to tell Daryl." Sophia stated.
"You know what it's like. You know she'll do it again." I whispered.
"Then tell your dad." Sophia insisted.
"I can't." I shook my head.
"Then I will." Sophia offered.
I pursed my lips together. "Just... Give me time, okay?"
Sophia didn't respond verbally, but she nodded. We sat in silence until was saw a car driving up towards the house. Lori walked past us while holding Carl's hands, Carol sat behind me and Sophia, putting her hand on each one of our shoulders. We watched as Rick got out of the car, Carl running up to him and hugging him tightly, Lori pulled him in close to hug as well. "I told you they'd be okay." Carol said to us both.
My dad, Shane, Andrea and T-dog were about to head out to search for them all so they walked over too. Hershel got out of the front of the car; Maggie ran towards him... But then around him to hug Glenn. "Awkward." I commented.
"Patricia. Prepare the shed for surgery." Hershel commanded, walking towards the house.
"Who's hurt?" Sophia asked. Rick, Glenn and Hershel all looked fine.
I stood up, noticing someone else in the car. "What's that." I pointed to the figure. I didn't believe they'd bring someone else back.
"That's Randall." Glenn replied.
"What's a Randall?" I furrowed my eyebrows, walking over to my dad who picked me up since this was the first time I was seeing him today and it was about lunch time.
Me, Sophia and Carl were kicked out of the house. They brought back an injured man and needed to discuss what to do with him. So, they sent me, Sophia and Carl to go sit in the RV. They called it adult talk. "I wonder what they're gonna do." Carl commented.
We watched as Shane stormed out of the house, looking very annoyed. "Looks like Rick said something Shane didn't like again." I pointed out.
"My dad will make the right call." Carl nodded.
"We know. Rick's good." Sophia smiled.
"Shane on the other hand..." I trailed off.
"There's nothing wrong with Shane." Carl shook his head.
"Dude's in love with your mum. He definitely thinks the baby's his. He shot at me. Tried to get you to shoot at me. Do I go on?" I raised my eyebrows.
"Why don't you lay off." Carl said angrily. "At least he's here. Unlike your dad who's moved to the woods."
"You don't know what you're talking about." I shook my head.
"Really? Cause I've been up there. I've seen the ears. He's crazy." Carl spat. This caused me to shove Carl roughly in the chest, making him take a few steps back.
"Guys, don't!" Sophia yelled. Carl swung at my head, but I dodged. He tried to kick me, but I stepped back, he went to grab my hair, but I side stepped him.
"Come on, you just gonna dodge the whole time? I knew girls can't fight." Carl laughed before I punched him in the nose. Blood instantly coated my knuckles as it poured from his nose.
"Ellie!" Sophia gasped.
Tears filled Carl's eyes as he brought his hands up to his nose. "I think you broke my nose!" He cried. "I'm telling my dad." Carl then ran out of the RV and started going towards the house.
"Damnit, Carl!" I yelled after him as I chased him
I quickly caught up to him as he entered the dining room where every adult apart from Shane and Andrea was. "Ellie broke my nose." Carl said, a few tears on his face as we entered the room.
"Did not! It's just bleeding! And he started it!" I defended.
"You did what?" Lori asked, kneeling in front of her son as she pulled his hands away to take a look.
"Ellie, what the hell happened!" Dad yelled at me from the other side of the room.
"No, don't yell at her. I started it." Carl pointed out.
"What?" Rick asked.
"I swung first and said girls couldn't hit. She was proving me wrong. She doesn't deserve to be in trouble for it." Carl told everyone.
"You swung at her?" Glenn questioned.
"Yea, like three times. This is my point people. He started it." I crossed my arms over my chest.
"Your nose isn't broken, Carl." Lori sighed, standing up and looking at me. "Now, apologise to my son."
"No." I shook my head.
"It's alright, mum. We're even now." Carl denied, wiping the blood in his sleeve.
"No, it's not alright. Isabella, Daryl? Either of you going to tell your daughter to apologise?" Lori raised her eyebrows at her.
"Sounds like she was defending herself from your boy." Dad crossed his arms over his chest.
"Me and her are going for a little walk in the woods soon anyways. I'll tell her off then." Mum shook her head. I looked at my mum, her glare made me look away though. I didn't agree to go for a walk? What have I done now? She's not drunk or high? Maybe she just misses the feeling of hurting me.
Lori raised her hand. I didn't realise she was just spreading her arms to signify how annoyed she was. All I saw was her hand raising towards me. I flinched and took a step back. I tried to play it off, but it was too late. Dad had noticed.
