The Governor
I was stripped of my gun and knife. Two items I was quite fond of in the ongoing apocalypse. I was thrown into a room and the door locked. It was like a hospital room. I ran up to the door and banged on it. "Hey! Let me out!" I screamed, but that wasn't going to work. I turned around and noticed a window. Running over, I pried it open. When I looked down though, it was about thirty feet drop to the ground.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." A man said from behind me.
I whizzed around, I hadn't even heard the door open. He had an eyepatch over his right eye and a fresh cut over his left eyebrow. "Who the hell are you?" I demanded. I noticed he was holding a white plastic bag which had something inside it, I wanted to know what.
"They call me the Governor."
"Now the window sounds like a better idea." I commented, sitting on the ledge.
"Your people attacked my people." The Governor crossed his arms over his chest.
"Your people kidnapped my people." I reminded him.
"Small details." He shrugged. "What's your name, darling?"
I hesitated. "Ellie."
He hummed, putting the white plastic bag on the bed. "Go ahead, open it."
"Why?" I asked.
"Because I said so." He said as a small smile played on his lips.
I slowly walked over and opened up the bag. When I did, it was a pink dress with matching pink shoes. I raised my eyebrows. "What are these for?"
"You." He stroked my hair. I pulled my head back, but he grabbed a fistful of my hair and forced me to stay close. "They're for you, Penny."
"My name's Ellie." I furrowed my eyebrows.
"No, not anymore. You're my Penny." He smiled, gently caressing my cheek. "Get dressed. I'll give you some privacy." He turned around sitting on the bed.
"Doesn't that usually mean to leave the room?" I wondered.
"I don't want to be apart from you anymore, Penny." The Governor shook his head, chuckling slightly.
My eyes widened in judgement. I grabbed the white bad, kneeling up onto the bed and quickly putting his head into the bag and pulling it tight. I wasn't going to kill him, just knock him out enough for me to run. He clawed at the bag and stood up, I stood up on the bed, keeping my tight grip. He reached back with his arm and grabbed my shirt before throwing me onto the floor. I had to let go of the bag. He pulled the bag off his head and looked very angry. "Sorry, I'm sorry." I whimpered as he angrily approached me.
He grabbed my shirt and pushed me into the wall before slapping me. "That's no way to treat your father!" He yelled, slapping me again.
"I'm sorry! Just let me go!" I begged.
He slapped me again. "You will get changed into the nice dress I graciously got for you, and you'll like it!" He yelled, hitting me again.
"I will. I promise. I'm sorry." I cried.
"Good. I'll be back in five minutes. I expect you to think about what you've done." He ordered before storming out of the room and locking it behind him. I stared after him, holding onto my stinging cheek. Soft sniffles coming from me as tears ran down my face.
I'd gotten changed like he'd ordered me too. I hated it. The dress was too light pink for my skin tone and the shoes were uncomfortable. He had taken my hand and was now walking me down the street. I hoped my dad got away. I hope Rick snapped back into reality. I hoped everyone was safe.
We entered what looked to be a mini arena, there was a crowd of people sitting on tiered benches surrounding a square. There were large, controlled fires to light up the area and the people were cheering like mad. That's when I saw him, Uncle Merle. He was staring at me. I couldn't read his expression, but he did seem curious. The way he looked at my outfit suggested that he'd seen me earlier in the night not wearing this outfit, the way he stared at my face made me realise he'd never seen my scar before, and my face was also probably bruised now. "Help." I mouthed to him, but he just stared silently. Uncle Merle looked different as well, only slightly though... That being his right hand was missing and now had some Captain Hook style sword attached onto it. Pretty cool.
The crowed silenced when the Governor walked into the middle with me in hand. "What can I say?" He started. "Hasn't been a night like this since the walls were completed. And I thought we were passed it... Past the days when we all sat huddled, scared in front of the tv during the early days of the outbreak. The fear we all felt then, we felt it again tonight." I tuned out the rest of what the Governor said as I noticed her. Standing in the crowd. Blonde hair resting on her shoulders, a blue button up shirt, and eyes staring at me as they were blown wide. I stared at her back. I hadn't seen her since the farm. Andrea. She looked scared, I was scared, we were scared. I didn't know what was happening. I thought she was dead and now I realised she'd been with the Governor. I was glad she was safe... But if she was with him... Was she really? "And worse, because one of those terrorists is one of our own." I heard the Governor say, I looked up to him as I was now curious. Sure, Andrea and Merle had been with us before... But they hadn't for a very long time. And we weren't terrorists! "Merle." The Governor pointed at my uncle as there was a gasp from the crowd. "The man I counted on, the man I trusted. He led them here. He let them in. They kidnapped this girl who I've now saved." The Governor fed his people false information, I blinked a few times trying to process what was going on as I glanced at Andrea and then Merle who was being stripped of his weapons, even his sword hand! "It was you! You lied, betrayed us all!"
"What in the shit is going on." I muttered to myself.
"This is one of the terrorists!" The Governor yelled as two men escorted out a man with a bag over his head. Looking at his clothes, I knew who it was, but I shook my head in denial. I needed him to be safe! The Governor let go of my hand as he stalked over to the man who had his hands handcuffed behind his back. Grabbing one of his arms, he ripped the bag off his head. "Merle's own brother!"
The crowd gasped, but I yelled. "Daddy!"
Dad looked at me in horror, staring at my clothes and he paled, realising that I wouldn't have willingly put those on. He then looked at Merle before his eyes went back to me. "What should we do with them, huh?" The Governor yelled at the crowd.
"Kill them!" Many people from the crowd shouted. Andrea stayed silent, looking around horrified.
"What do you want?" The Governor encouraged.
"Kill them!" The crowd closed in slightly as they all kept yelling the same words. "Kill them! Kill them! Kill them!" They cheered.
The Governor took my hand again and made me go to the edge with him. My dad and Merle were basically in a fighting wring at this point.
The Governor let go of my hand, before he circled my dad and Merle. I looked over to Andrea who was fighting some nerdy looking fella to be let into the fighting square. She got free from the nerdy looking guy before an actual armed and strong man grabbed onto her. "Let me go!" She struggled against the man before looking back to the Governor who was standing beside me. "Phillip. He's my friend. And that's his daughter, he wasn't holding her hostage."
"It's not up to me anymore. The people have spoken." The Governor said to her dismissively.
"Andrea, help please." I begged her. The last time I said those words to her, she did nothing and let me go into the woods with my mother. This time she didn't do anything either, but this time she was being held back because she wanted to help me and my dad.
The Governor, whose name was apparently Phillip looked over to Merle. "I asked you where your loyalties are. You said here. Prove it." He ordered as a man uncuffed my dad before walking away with the chains. "Prove it to us all. Brother against brother. Winner goes free. Fight to the death!" The Governor yelled as the crowd cheered, loudly.
"Phillip, please. Don't do this." Andrea begged. "Don't do this!"
"Let's go, Merle!" Someone yelled.
"Come on, Merle!" Another person bellowed.
Merle stared at my dad for a while, he briefly glanced at me before speaking to the crowd. "Y'all know me! I'm going to do, whatever I gotta do to prove-" He cut himself off when he hit my dad.
"No!" I screamed, trying to run over and help but the Governor grabbed my arm and pulled me back. The force made me fall to the floor; I didn't try to stand up as I cried but the Governor still gripped my arm tightly.
I saw my dad had somehow managed to end up on the floor by the hands of Merle while I was distracted. "To prove my loyalty is to this town!" Merle shouted. When the beating happened, I had to shut my eyes. I couldn't watch my dad go through that. I cried as I had my eyes shut tightly.
I opened my eyes again when I heard the snarls of walkers. Four men walked over with walkers on the ends of long poles, like Hershel did on the farm. Merle and my dad had to fight each other and avoid being bitten by the walkers that they were now surrounded by. Dad lunged at Merle but still lost and ended up on the floor again. Merle had dad pinned while dad was gripping Merle's neck, trying to keep him at bay.
Suddenly, Merle pulled dad to his feet, and they stood back-to-back ready to attack anyone who came close. They kicked and punched at the walkers as the men made them go closer to my family. "Phillip, no! Stop this!" Andrea yelled.
When the gun shots started, I looked around panicked. That was until I saw none other than Rick Grimes. I went up on my knees and bit the Governor's hand. He pulled it off me with a yell of pain, so I got up and ran. I ran over to Rick and Maggie, quickly going on my knees. "Oh, sweetheart." Maggie hugged me tightly before she raised her gun again.
"What the hell happened?" Rick asked.
"I'll explain later. Just cover my dad and uncle Merle." I responded over the loud noise. People were screaming, walkers were roaming free and there was still smoke everywhere.
"Here. Help us." Rick handed me a machine gun.
I gawked at it. "Cool." I said with a bright smile before I started shooting. I shot the remaining walkers, the people who were threats I shot in the leg or the hand, so they'd drop their weapons. I didn't kill anyone. I covered my dad as he stole his crossbow back off one of the Governor's men. "Daddy." I said happily when my dad and Merle finally made it over.
"Hi, baby. We gotta go, now." Dad ordered.
We made it away from the arena. "They're all at the arena. This way." Merle commanded us.
"You're not going anywhere with us!" Rick protested.
"You really wanna do this now?" Merle questioned before breaking open a panel on the wall.
"Rick, come on. We gotta go." Dad said, pushing me through after Merle.
"A little help would be nice!" Merle yelled as he bashed in the head of a walker with his metal nub. We took out more walkers before just running away from Woodbury.
