----------
My footsteps were slow and quiet. When you're walking on a wooden plank above a pit of sixty walkers... You're bound to be a little nervous. Sophia and Carl stood behind me on the safe and secure platform while I took the risk to get the cans of food. There looked to be about forty to fifty cans, which we needed all of. The walkers growling and trying to reach me caught my attention. I was about ten feet above them though, so as long as the platform held and I didn't fall... I'd be okay. When I was about two feet away from safety, I pretty much jumped.
I let out a breath, so did Sophia and Carl. Sophia clasped a hand over her heart in relief as Carl nodded. "Remember when we needed to get out of the mall hella quick? After the CDC?" I called over.
"Good idea." Sophia told me. Carl stood on the other side of the wooden plank, Sophia moved closer to the door where the RV was. She grabbed a random empty box by the door and waited. I grabbed a can of soup and chucked it to Carl, who chucked it to Sophia, who put it in the box. This continued until Sophia called out. "Box is full! Give me a minute!" She ran into the RV, unloaded the cans, before coming back with the empty box. "Alright, El!"
That continued until all forty seven cans were secured in the RV. "Ready to go?" Carl asked.
As if on cue, a ceiling light fell right above the wooden plank which then trapped me on another platform. I let out an irritated sigh. "This is what we get for looting old factories!" I complained.
"Well, now what do we do?" Sophia asked.
Carl looked up to where the light had fallen from and saw a pipe. "Well..." Carl trailed off.
"Carl, no, we have literally no idea how secure that pipe is." Sophia denied.
"We'll pull on it before we get her to swing over. Easy as pie." Carl shrugged, turning around to get the rope from the RV.
"I'm gonna die, aren't I." I complained.
"El, you'll be fine." Sophia tried to assure me.
Carl came back with the rope. "Took you long enough, cowboy." I commented.
"You want us to leave you here?" Carl raised an eyebrow.
"On your six!" I let out as I watched a walker enter the room.
Sophia swiftly turned around, pulled out one of the machetes in her belt before slicing the head of the walker... All in less than three seconds. "Got him." She said, holstering her machete and turned so she could see me and Carl, and make sure the door was clear.
Carl swung the rope up to the pipe. He failed the first time. He failed the second time. Guess what? He failed the third time. However, the forth time was also a fail... But he did get it on the fifth try. "I was starting to turn grey, Carl." As the rope swung, I managed to grab onto it.
"You try swinging a rope onto a pipe with one eye." Carl complained, wrapping the rest of the rope around his arm. "Give it a tug."
I pulled the rope as hard as I could. The pipe held. "You ready, El?" Sophia asked.
"Don't drop me, Grimes." I warned.
"No promises, Dixon." Carl smirked.
I wrapped the rope around my arm, pulling again just to make sure. "Damnit." I took a few steps back, before running towards the gap. I swung over, I was going to fall away from the ledge until Sophia grabbed me and pulled me forward. I grabbed onto her as soon as I could, Carl started unravelling the rope to pull it back. I was breathing deeply. "Thanks, guys."
"Told you I wouldn't drop you." Carl grinned.
"I also told you your hair looks nice today. People lie." I grinned.
Carl laughed. "You're hilarious. Come on, ladies, let's go."
"Ladies? Why so formal, Harry Potter?" Sophia laughed at him as we headed out to the RV.
"We just got a shit ton of food, Hermione Granger. It's a good day." Carl smiled.
The past couple months had gone just like that day. Risking our lives for supplies, sometimes we scored, a lot of the time we didn't. Life on the road was a lot more fun without having adults constantly telling you what to do. Especially, when you had a luxury campervan to travel around in.
Okay, luxury may be an overstatement... But, it was better than what we were used too when we've been on the road before. Sophia and Carl took turns driving, I however couldn't drive so I pretty much just read books I picked up along the way.
"What you reading?" Sophia asked as she plonked herself next to me on the sofa.
"Beautiful Creatures. I lost the copy Beth gave me, it was left in the house when the herd moved in on the farm. I found a new copy in that house a couple days ago, figured I'd finish reading it." I answered.
"Any good?" Sophia questioned.
"It's a slow burn. So far, so good though." I muttered.
"Sorry you lost the one Beth gave you." Sophia said quietly.
I shrugged. "It's fine. Lost worse things than that book." Sophia hummed, laying down and putting her head on my lap so try and get some sleep. "Goodnight, Soph."
"Goodnight, El."
"Wake up, wake up!" Carl told us, literally shaking us awake.
"What's happening?" Sophia asked, grabbing her machetes from her belt, I reached for my boomerang.
"No, nothing's wrong. Look what I found." Carl pointed out a window.
"Is that the beach?" I asked, running out of the RV.
"One of many." Carl answered, following me out. "I figured we deserved it before we head back to drop off what we found."
"Carl, you're amazing." Sophia squeezed Carl before running down to the sand. I followed her, Carl shut the RV door before we all ran towards the ocean. "Oh my god! It's so cold!" Sophia laughed.
"It's so good!" I countered as we splashed around.
We all laughed together, having a mini water fight as we splashed each other with the freezing, salty water. Even though it was summer, the water was still cold, we didn't care though. We couldn't stop laughing as the waves washed against us, when we accidentally swallowed the unclean water.
We stayed in the water for nearly an hour before we decided to lay out on the sand to dry off. Sophia started a fire, we all cooked a can each for dinner. I had beans, Sophia had soup, Carl had some weird chicken in white sauce. We ate it on the sand, around the fire. "I really hope this doesn't give me salmonella." Carl commented.
"I slightly overcooked it just to be safe." Sophia responded.
Carl smiled. "Thanks. That would be an embarrassing way to go after all we've lived through."
I hummed and nodded. "What do you guys think is going on back home?" I asked, pulling my blanket around me more.
"I'm sure we're winning. I'm sure everyone's okay." Sophia comforted me.
"And if they're not? What if we go back home and there's no home to back too?" I questioned.
"Don't think like that, Ellie. There's nothing we can do to stop what will happen. You trust the people back home?" Carl pushed.
"Of course, but bad things happen to good people all the time." I pointed out.
"It's about time our luck starts changing. We've been through enough shit, don't you think?" Sophia reminded me. "Law of averages and all that."
I laughed and nodded. "Things seemed to be going pretty good for you before we left though."
"How are you coping without your girlfriend?" Carl grinned.
Sophia laughed. " I can't wait to see her again. I wish she could come with us, but Maggie needs her."
"I don't think my ears would survive if you and Enid were together in the RV all the time." Carl pointed out.
Sophia threw a shell at him. "We wouldn't be that bad." Me and Carl both made noises of disagreement. "You guys are unbelievable." Sophia laughed, eating more of her soup.
"What was unbelievably difficult to get over was being in the room next to yours and Enid when we stayed at the Kingdom the night before we left." Carl stated, turning to me. "I heard things, El. So many things that will haunt my nightmares."
I laughed at him as Sophia spoke. "I apologised for that!"
"A sorry won't reverse the trauma." He pointed at her with his fork, before putting the chicken in his mouth.
Sophia grinned and shook her head. "You're being dramatic."
"And you're invalidating my trauma." Carl countered.
Their banter continued like that back and forth for a while. I just sat there, eating my beans, laughing at them and taking in my environment. I was sitting on the beach with my family, eating food, watching the sunset, listening to the ocean... Maybe things weren't so bad.
I was wrong. Things were still bad. I had been sitting on the concrete steps, watching Sophia splash in the ocean. She had stopped and then started running towards me. She was yelling something. I laughed at her. "Run, bitch, run!" I called down to her, a laugh escaping my lips. I knew she couldn't hear me though, because I couldn't hear her.
"What she saying?" Carl asked, coming out of the RV, brushing his teeth.
"Maybe she got stung by a jellyfish." I commented.
"Maybe." Carl laughed.
Sophia continued to try to communicate with us as she bolted towards us. Since the sea was out, it was quite the distance for her to cover. That's when I heard a gun shot. I looked to the source and saw six women. "Shit!" I yelled as me and Carl ran into the RV. I watched through the window as Sophia took cover behind an abandoned ice cream truck on the sand. Carl locked the RV door.
"Give us your shit and none of you have to die!" One of the women called from outside the RV. Me and Carl ducked and lay down on the ground, looking at each other. "You got ten seconds before we open fire!"
"What do we do?" Carl asked.
"We can't give them what we looted." I answered.
"Anna, don't kill the boy. We could have some fun with him before we kill him." I heard one of the women say.
Carl looked to me with a scared look in his eye. "That's not going to happen. Follow my lead." I whispered. I crawled over to the bathroom and only stood up when I was in the room. I stood up on the toilet and pushed open the roof window... Sky light... Whatever it's called. I pulled myself up, but didn't stand on the roof, I leaned over the side. I pulled out my gun and shot the first person I saw. Her body fell to the floor, before I shot another.
"Damnit! They got Val and Kate!" The leader yelled, running to the other side of the RV.
Carl passed me a machine gun before I climbed onto the roof. I peered over the side but then narrowly avoided a bullet that was shot my way. One of the women pushed away from the RV to try and shoot me, but I got her first. "No! Amelia!"
"Throw your guns to the floor. Run away, and the rest of you can live." I ordered.
"Okay, okay... Just... Don't kill us." I recognised the leader's voice as three guns were thrown to the ground in my view. They slowly moved away from the RV, into my view. "You got a minute to get out of my eye line before you're dead."
"Okay... We're sorry." The leader started turning to me. She raised her gun at me, but before I could shoot her... She fell dead. Then, so did the other two women. I turned and saw Sophia and Carl standing there with their guns raised.
I let out a breath. "Thanks, guys." That's when I noticed a red blood stain on Carl's shoulder. "Carl." I said, quietly.
He looked down and his eye went wide. "Ah, shit. The adrenalin can't have worn off yet."
"You're lucky we raided that pharmacy the other day." Sophia commented. "I'll start driving us home, Ellie will patch you up until we can get you to doctor Ackles."
I sighed. "Let's go home."
