Red Cars

Me and Sophia were sitting on some swinging double chair that was outside the RV. I'm not sure why it was there... Maybe Hershel gave it to us for extra seating. Carl was sitting on the floor, facing me and Sophia as we were all talking. That's when Beth came over to us. "Hi, kids. What ya doing?" She smiled, I noticed she had a book in her hand.

"Just talking. Wanna join us?" Carl asked. Me and Sophia smirked at each other, we knew Carl had a bit of a crush on Beth.

"Actually, I just came over to give you guys this book. It's pretty good. I'm not sure if any of y'all are into reading?" Beth asked.

"I am. I used to have loads of books back where I used to live, but I didn't have room to pack them." I replied.

"Here, you can have this one. I figured you guys are missing out on a lot of school." Beth laughed as she handed me the book.

"Thanks." I smiled, reading the name which was Beautiful Creatures.

"See ya later, kids." Beth started walking away.

"Bye, Beth." Carl called after her with a hopeful smile, she turned and waved before being back on her way. Carl's eyes never left Beth, as long as she was in eye line.

"Awh, Carl has a crush." Sophia teased.

"No, no. He's in love." I corrected as me and Sophia laughed.

"Am not." Carl denied.

"Sure, buddy." Sophia grinned.

Carl cleared his throat. "So, you got a book?"

"Yea, it looks good. It kinds smells like Beth." I stated.

"Can I smell?" Carl took the book off me and sniffed it. "No, it doesn't." Carl furrowed his eyebrows causing me and Sophia to burst out laughing.

"Walker!" Andrea yelled from the top of the RV.

We looked over to the other side of the field and saw a walker liming into view. "Just the one?" Rick asked, coming over.

Andrea looked through the binoculars. "I bet I can nail it from here."

"No, no. Andrea, put the gun down." Rick ordered.

"You best let us handle this." Shane said as him and T-dog came over with bats in their hands.

"Shane, hold up. Hershel wants to deal with walkers." Rick reminded his friend.

"What for, man? We got it covered." Shane said dismissively.

"Damnit." Rick let out as he also got a weapon. Rick, T-dog, Glenn and Shane started running across the field to get to the walker.

Andrea raised her gun again. "My dad said to let them handle this." Carl reminded her.

"Carl, you're a kid, okay? Let the adults handle this." Andrea got on her stomach to get a better shot. We watched as the men stopped in front of the walker, not doing anything. The walker also stopped? Walkers don't stop when there's food right in front of them.

"Andrea, don't." Dale tried.

"Stay outta this, Dale." Andrea ordered before pulling the trigger.

"No!" We heard Rick yell; we saw the men waving their arms in a stop motion. "Stop!"

"It's not a walker." Sophia realised.

"Dad!" I yelled, suddenly realising he was the only one still out looking for Jacob. I got up from my seat, went around Carl and started running. I was used to running by now, and I was fast. I bolted across that field as fast as I could. My feet hitting the floor again, and again, and again. Tears stung my eyes, but I didn't want to let them fall. I froze when I saw Rick and Shane carrying my dad who had his eyes closed. I was about ten feet away when I saw my dad covered in blood, with his eyes closed, not moving.

"Oh my god! Is he dead?" Andrea ran up behind me in a panic.

"Unconscious. You just grazed him." Rick answered.

"Daddy." I ran up to him and tried to wake him up, making Rick and Shane stop. "Daddy, wake up! It's not funny!"

I felt two arms grab me and pick me up. I cried as I watched Shane and Rick continue walking towards the house with my dad. I realised Glenn was the one who was carrying me as he'd passed my dad's crossbow to Dale.

"He's wearing ears around his chest." Glenn pointed out. I noticed four ears strung together around his neck like a necklace.

"Let's keep that to ourselves." Rick pulled the necklace off my father and put it in his pocket.

"Guys." T-dog said from behind up, we turned to him and saw him carrying a red car that my father must have had. "Isn't this Jacob's?"

Me and Sophia were sitting outside what had now been dubbed as the medical room since there were so many injuries. Sophia was just holding her brother's car and staring at it with an unreadable expression. "What are you thinking?" I asked her.

"That this stupid car might've cost my brother his life." Sophia whispered.

"Hey, he's not dead." I tried to give her hope.

"He wouldn't have just let this car go. He loved it. He always attached to things, until he found something better. This car was the best thing he had, he wouldn't have dropped it and not gone back." Sophia explained, tears in her eyes.

"Maybe he was being chased. Hell, we know what that's like. Would you have gone back for Dolly if there was a walker standing on top of her?" I asked.

"I would've tried to double back for her at some point." Sophia nodded.

"Maybe my dad just got the car before Jacob could double back. Without a body, Jacob is not dead, we have nothing to suggest that he is, okay?" I smiled at her. She turned to me and smiled sadly.

"Thanks, El." Sophia whispered.

Shane and Rick exited the medical room. I stood up quickly. "He's okay." Rick smiled at me.

"Can I go in and see him?" I questioned.

"I think he'll love that." Rick nodded.

I quickly went in and jumped onto the bed next to my father who wasn't wearing a shirt since Hershel had just been stitching him up. "He'll be just fine." Hershel smiled at me.

"Thanks, Hershel." I grinned before he too left the room. "You found Jacob's car."

"Yes, I did." Dad brought up the blanket to cover his exposed torso.

"What was with the ears?" I questioned.

"What do you mean, baby?"

"The ears. You were wearing them like a necklace." I pointed out.

"I was just tired, princess. I lost a lot of blood and it messed with my head a little. I thought I was talking to your Uncle Merle for a little while back then."

"Uncle Merle?" I repeated.

"I know." Dad nodded and a small laugh escaped his lips. There was a knock at the door. "Come in."

Sophia pushed open the door and smiled. "I didn't mean to interrupt. I was just seeing if you were okay."

"You're not interrupting, sweetheart. Come on, sit down. I've had a rough day, I wanna hear about yours." Dad looked between us with a smile. I made room for Sophia to sit down on the bed, she still had a sad look on her face though. "I'm sorry I haven't found your brother yet. But we will, I promise. I brought back you girls, didn't I? And I got that car."

"Thank you for everything, Daryl." Sophia struggled to keep eye contact.

"It's like Rick was blabbering on about before. We're a family now. I'm gonna look out for you and your mum. And your brother when he gets back. I promise." Dad winked at her, getting her to smile and laugh at him.

"Daddy." I looked to my father.

"Yes, baby." Dad smiled.

"You remember when Dale accidentally shot me?" I asked.

"Yes, I do happen to remember one of the most terrifying days of my life." Dad nodded.

I smiled. "Accidents don't just happen accidentally... You know what I mean."

"No." Sophia shook her head with her eyebrows furrowed.

"We weren't planning on staying long. But, now I think we'd all do anything for each other. We became a family. If Dale hadn't had shot me then we wouldn't have ended up at camp." I explained.

"That's a good point." Dad nodded.

"Why weren't you planning on staying long?" Sophia asked.

Dad sighed. "Ellie's Uncle Merle and I weren't God's favourite people. But neither of you need to worry about that. That's in the past now."
