Newbies

My dad, Rick, T-dog, Maggie, Glenn and Hershel because he insisted were gearing up with old police armour they'd found. They were going further into the prison to try and clear it out. We didn't wanna wake up in the middle of the night to walkers eating us because we didn't check if the prison was safe. I was sitting on the stairs watching them helplessly, I wanted to help but they'd never let me go.

Carl was smiling to himself as he was trying on a helmet that wouldn't fit him. "You won't need that." Rick took the helmet off his son. "I need you to stay put."

"You're kidding." Carl raised his eyebrows.

"We don't know what's in there." Rick shook his head. "Something goes wrong, you could be the last man standing. I need you to handle things here."

"What could Carl possibly handle that I couldn't?" I asked myself, Carol sat down next to me.

"Still sulking you're not going with?" Carol asked.

"Yup. It does make me feel better that they're not letting Carl go though." I responded.

Carol tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. "I promise, one day you'll be allowed to run straight first into danger."

I smiled and a small laugh escaped my lips. "Thanks."

I saw Rick give Carl the keys. "Great. Let's go." Rick nodded.

I saw dad hug Sophia and kiss the top of her head before he looked over to me. "You still sulking?"

"Yes." I responded.

"Okay, bye." Dad shrugged and started to leave.

"Wait." I called, getting up and running after him. I hugged him tightly and he hugged me back. "Promise you'll come back."

"I promise, babe." Dad leaned down and kissed the top of my head before he walked out the metal gate, Carl locked it behind him. Then we watched as the six went through another door that led them to the rest of the prison we hadn't explored.

"They'll be okay." Carl said to me.

I nodded. "I'm sure they will."

I'd been sitting by the gate, waiting for them to come back. About twenty minutes later, the door burst open, and Hershel was on a wheely table thing being pushed by the others. "What's going on?" Beth asked as she heard the noise.

"Carl, keys!" I yelled, he came running and unlocked the gate just as they approached to let them in. Our eyes widened when we noticed Hershel missing his right leg? "What the hell happened?" I questioned.

"He got bit." Dad replied.

"Daddy!" Beth yelled as she saw her father.

I saw them wheeling him into a cell that wasn't being used. My dad and T-dog went back out into where the tables are, T-dog closed the gate behind him. I was very confused, I decided there was enough people in with Hershel, so I gently opened the gate and stepped over the other side with dad and T-dog. They hadn't seen me, but they both had their weapons raised and was pointing them at the door that led to the rest of the prison.

I heard footsteps and automatically assumed walkers, but when that man walked round and four more followed him... I didn't know what to think. "That's far enough." My dad said, still not having noticed me. All five of the men looked at my dad and T-dog before pretty much staring right at me.

"Cell block C. Cell four... That's mine, gringo. Let me in." The man who seemed to be the leader of their mini group said.

I'd heard many people say "gringo" before. In my neighbourhood, it was mostly Latina and black Americans living there. We had a few white people, and their names were pretty much changed to gringo by the people who lived there. Personally, I always used their names if I ended up in a conversation with them, which didn't usually happen since I don't like people.

"Today's your lucky day, fellas. You've been pardoned by the state of Georgia. You're free to go." My dad said. I heard a quiet noise behind me. Sophia was on the other side of the gate, basically next to me and also watching the encounter.

"Whatcha got going on in there?" The man questioned my father.

"Ain't none of your concern." Dad responded.

"Don't be telling me what's my concern." The main guy pulled out his gun, so dad got ready to fire.

"Chill, man." An extremely tall man said to his boss. "The dude's leg is messed up. Besides we're free now. Let's just go."

"Your man's got a point." Dad agreed.

"I'm gonna go help with Hershel." Sophia whispered to me before walking away.

"I better check on my old lady." One of the men said.

"Group of civilians breaking into a prison you ain't got no business being in. Got me thinking that there ain't no place for us to go." The main guy raised his eyebrows.

"Why don't you go find out." Dad suggested.

"Maybe we'll just be going now." Another one of the men suggested.

"Hey, we ain't leaving." The main guy raised his voice slightly.

"You ain't coming in either!" T-dog matched his volume, cocking his gun as he spoke up for the first time.

The main guy raised his gun at T-dog. "Hey, this is my house, my rules. I go where I damn well please. Don't make me shoot that Chica. Would be a shame to kill the first girl any of us saw in years."

Dad and T-dog turned and noticed me standing there. "Go back to the others, now!" Dad yelled at me. I didn't hesitate to go back to the other side of the gate and close it behind me. I went to go see Hershel but there were already so many people in there. The sight of the bloody rags surrounding his decapitated leg made me sick to my stomach, so I ran upstairs. I went into mine and Sophia's room and collapsed onto Sophia's bed since I couldn't get to mine without assistance.

I'd been laying on Sophia's bed for a couple minutes. Teddy was up on my bed, and I couldn't get to him, so I had my hand over Dolly. Whenever I've been sad before, Sophia's given me Dolly to help me, so I knew she wouldn't mind. Just like I wouldn't mind if she needed Teddy, and she has in the past.

I heard someone enter the room and sit on the bed. "You wanna be useful?" Carl's voice asked.

I sat up and looked at him. "What do you mean?"

"Hershel needs medical stuff, right?" Carl reminded me.

"Right." I nodded.

"I got the keys." Carl held up the keys with a smirk on his face. "There's another gate, behind the stairs. I bet that would take us further into the prison. To the infirmary, I bet."

"Your mum agreed to this?" I raised my eyebrows.

"We weren't allowed to go today because they don't believe in us. We come back with medical supplies, save Hershel's life? We'll be heroes. They'll take us with them every time. Guaranteed." Carl grinned.

Me and Carl snuck out the back gate that I didn't even realise was there to be honest with you. I had my gun and knife, Carl had his gun and knife, so he locked the door behind us. "You actually have a plan or we just hoping for the best?" I asked in a hushed tone as we started walking down the hallway.

"There's gotta be a sign somewhere... Probably." Carl now sounded unsure of himself.

As we got to where you could turn left or right, we jumped out, back-to-back, ready to kill any walkers luring round the corners, but there was nobody. "Booya." I pointed to a sign that had an arrow, straight forward to go to the infirmary.

"Told you." Carl smiled as we started walking that way, our guns still raised.

"Don't be so smug." I said with a small smile on my face.

"Don't act like you wouldn't be gloating your ass off if this was your idea." Carl responded, we rounded a corner and was faced with a walker. Luckily, we both had silencers on our guns so when Carl shot the walker in the head, the only sound was its corpse hitting the ground.

"Okay, I would be. But that's not the point I'm trying to make here, Carl." I said. Carl just laughed quietly at me. We saw a walker further down the hallway, Carl's laughing had attracted it, so the dead prisoner walked straight towards us. I raised my gun. "I got it." With that I pulled the trigger. Head shot. "Look at that shot. Straight between the eyes." I smiled as we passed the walker who'd landed on its back.

"You're literally proving my point." Carl grinned. When we rounded a corner, we saw about nine walkers. "You got all them too?"

"Nah, I'll let you handle a couple. You need the training." I smiled as we both raised our guns. I shot three, Carl shot three. There was one left, but it was a copper, and it had the full body uniform on which meant bullet proof helmets. "Crap." I rolled my eyes. "I'll grab, you stab." I ordered, walking up to him, dodging his grab and going behind him. Before he could turn around, I kicked out its legs, so he landed on his stomach. I grabbed the head and held it up so Carl could stab upwards through its chin and into the brain. Carl then pulled out the knife, blood splattering slightly and I dropped the head. "Hey, I rhymed." I realised about a minute after I'd actually said the rhyme.

Carl stared at me, unamused. "Duck."

I did what he said, Carl grabbed his gun and shot. When he lowered his gun, I saw that another walker had been coming for us. "Thanks."

Me and Carl had gotten a buttload of medical supplies that Hershel needed. We didn't really know what any of it did... But Lori had been talking about things they needed, and Carl heard so he had a mental shopping list. We'd found a doctor's bag and filled it up. We got back to Cell block C, opened the back gate and locked it again when we were inside.

We headed over to the cell Hershel was in and Carl put the bag on the floor between Lori and Carol. "Check it out." Carl smiled.

Carol opened the bag wider and gasped in delight when she realised it was everything they needed. "You're welcome." I said proudly.

"Where did you get this?" Lori asked.

"From the infirmary." Carl answered.

"Took out some walkers as well." I crossed my arms over my chest.

"You two went out there alone?" Sophia questioned.

"Yea." I shrugged. Everyone looked at us in concern. Carol too but then she had to go back to wrapping Hershel's leg with the bandage stuff.

"Are you crazy?" Lori's voice was in a whisper... Ya know the scary one's mothers do when they're mad? I honestly wish she'd yelled instead.

"No big deal. We handled all the walkers." Carl still had the smile on his face, not realising we were in deep shit.

Lori looked back to Hershel, putting her hands on his chest before turning back to us. "Do you see this? This was with the whole group."

"We needed supplies, so we got them." Carl raised his voice. I started slowly backing out of the room, but I felt a hand on my back. I turned and saw that Glenn was making me stay for this lecture.

"I appreciate that-" Lori started yelling.

"Then get off my back!" Carl yelled back.

"Carl, she's your mother you can't talk to her like that." Beth told him. Carl just stared at her.

"Listen, I think it's great that you wanna help-" Lori was cut off by Carl running out of the room, upstairs and to his cell.

"Ellie." Lori turned to me.

"Lori." I responded.

"Was this your idea?" Lori asked.

"It was more of a joint effort if that gets Carl outta shit." I nodded.

"You took my son out there. He could've died!" Lori yelled at me, I flinched and took a step back into Glenn since I didn't realise, he was right behind me.

Glenn put his hand on my shoulder. "Lori, you don't need to yell at her." Glenn said.

"Yes, I do. I am sick and tired of that girl getting away with everything. She's never been punished a day in her life, she's gonna end up just like her mother if she carries on." Lori stated.

"Lori, don't say that to her." Carol said defensively.

"Why is everyone defending her? She's a child, and children need to be punished when they do something wrong." Lori said, she didn't know the truth. She wouldn't have said those things if she did. But it still hurt like hell.

Before anyone else could say anything, I pulled outta Glenn's grip and went upstairs. I sat on Sophia's bed, kicking my shoes off and curling up into a ball. I cried quietly into myself. I felt someone lying down behind me. Sophia. She put her arms around me and squeezed me tight, putting Dolly in my hands. "She doesn't know what she's talking about. You're nothing like Isabella." She whispered to me. I couldn't say anything back, I just shut my eyes, silent tears pouring down my face as I cried quietly.
