Jesus
I could feel a weight on my body. I could smell the blood. I could hear the walkers. I could see piercing blue eyes staring into my brown ones. I tried to move, but it was too heavy. I managed to wiggle my hands free, and quickly discovered that it was Jesus laying on top of me. I turned my head to the side and saw walkers kneeling all around me. Blood was squirting to the ground. They were eating... But, what were they eating? "Jesus?" I whispered into his face. No response.
I couldn't move. I could feel my own blood on my hair. The sharp edges of the rock dug deep into my skin. If I moved, I would be to weak to fight off the six walkers that surrounded my body... Jesus' body. Jesus was a lot bigger than myself, so his entire being covered mine. When my brain stopped lagging due to whatever brain trauma I just endured... I realised they were feasting on the leader of Hilltop. A single tear slid down my face as I stared at Jesus' cold, dead eyes. Only when his body shifted slightly, his head moving to the side of my own... Did I see the knife plunged deep into the side of his head.
"Ellie, look out!" Jesus yelled.
He pushed me out of the way. He saved my life... Losing his own in the process. I wanted to cry at the realisation, crawl up in a ball and apologise to whatever screwed up God that was letting this happen... But, I remained silent. Like a coward, I just let those walkers eat my friend. It was his dead body, or my alive one... And I chose to sacrifice his. I bit my bottom lip as it began to tremble. I couldn't scream. I couldn't weep. I couldn't run. I couldn't escape. I was trapped.
Only when the walkers moved on from Jesus' corpse, to the corpses of the dead horses... Did I even consider the possibility of trying to escape. I brought my hands up and tried pushing at his chest. I groaned slightly, he was too heavy. I put all my weight into rolling us over. Jesus was on his back, I reached up and closed his eyes. Sparing a glance at the distracted walkers, I tried to get up, but my knees gave out on me.
This caught the attention of one of the walkers. He started slowly limping towards me. I tried to silently drag my body away. Whimpers left my mouth as I crawled as far as I could. I got to the closest tree, using the bark, I pulled myself to my feet. A loud groan left my lips as I pulled myself up. I managed to get up a couple feet, before laying back on the thickest branch. I let out a sharp breath as I tried to relax. My people would find me soon... I just had to have a little bit of faith, like Sophia always advised me.
"Ellie! Jesus!" Mama's voice rung in the air, catching the attention of the walker which had been clawing at my tree for the past three hours.
"Luke! Alden!" Magna's voice called.
"Ellie!" Dad's voice seemed aggressive, but it wasn't directed it at me, it never was... He was probably angry with himself. Unfortunately, that was a pattern.
"Anyone!" Tara shouted out.
I could see the group: Sophia, dad, Rosita, mama, Tara, Magna, Yumiko, Connie and Kelly. I watched as Yumiko killed the walker I had silently named Barry. He used to be a Pilot because his dream was to go to every country in the world. Or, he was a bartender in Texas. Maybe a lawyer in New York.
I watched as the group took out the walkers that had surrounded the horses. They were mostly doing it from a distance. The dead were a lot more dangerous now that we knew not all of them were dead. I couldn't say a word, my throat was too dry. The lack of blood was really getting to me... Again. I wasn't having a great twenty four hours.
I couldn't hear their words, until my father's voice trailed from the others and into my direction. "Wait, wait... Look at these tracks here." He followed the trail I left when I crawled away, before his eyes slowly trailed up to me. "Ellie?" He yelled, dropping his crossbow and scaling the tree. I'd never seem him climb a tree... Nevermind with such speed. I heard my name repeated from mama, Sophia and Rosita's mouths as they gathered at the bottom. "Baby, are you okay?" Dad asked quietly, pulling me into the safety of his arms.
"Daddy?" I whispered.
"It's me, princess. I got you. I got you." He assured me, picking me up bridal style. I'm not sure what father powers he tapped into, but he managed to climb down the tree without using hands and without hurting me.
"How is she?" Mama's voice asked, instantly by my side, brushing hair from my face.
"We're getting her back to the doctor. Now." Rosita stated.
"Dad, you gotta run." Sophia's voice said from behind me. "She's lost a lot of blood... And even with mama's blood transfusion yesterday, she lost a lot then as well." Her voice was the last thing I heard before I pushed my face further into my father and let the darkness eat me up.
The sound I heard was not the sound I expected. "Ellie, wake up now please, you have to take me to the park." RJ's soft voice said from beside me. "Please." He whispered.
"It's alright, buddy. She should wake up soon. She has too." Carl's voice responded.
"Timing's always been my thing." I muttered.
"She's awake! Good, now get up." RJ ordered, shaking me slightly. I laughed quietly, as I felt Carl pull him away.
I managed to slowly blink open my eyes and take in the room around me. "How you feeling, Ron Weasley?" Carl asked.
"Like I got slam dunked by big one." I responded. Carl let a sad laugh pass his lips. "How long I been out?"
"About a week." Carl answered.
"A week?" I raised my eyebrows as RJ had managed to get onto the other side of the bed and was cuddling up to my side.
"Siddiq's been taking care of you. You're lucky head trauma was his speciality back in the day." Carl grinned. "Gabriel's been coming in every day and reading you Bible verses. When mama isn't doing her... Leader thing, she just sits here and stares at you. Rosita and Sophia have barely left your side. I had to force them to leave so they'd shower. Ben's been asking about you constantly, but he hasn't come to visit you. I don't think he could bring himself. Mrs Tanner, being trained as a nurse now, has taken care of everything else that would be slightly inappropriate for Siddiq to due considering his connection with Rosita."
"By his connection with Rosita you mean because she's pregnant with his kid? I know Rosita didn't want that... But, she's happy, so that makes me happy. Although, if that son of a bitch hurts her then I'm gonna cut off his head and stick it on a pole." I stated, hugging RJ as best I could.
"Violent." Carl acknowledged.
"What would be needed." I countered. "Where's my dad?"
"Still at Hilltop. He wanted to stay with you, but there was some crap going down with the whisperers and Lydia." Carl replied.
"Lydia?" I asked.
"The girl they nabbed from the woods." Carl nodded.
I hummed. "When can I leave this bed?"
"Probably not anytime soon. Everyone's been bending over backwards to make sure you don't pull another sneaking out of your hospital bed in the middle of the night stunt." Carl answered.
"Yea, well there's that." I clicked my tongue. "How is everyone... After... Ya know? Jesus?"
"Angry. Not at you. Once Daryl kinda pieced together what happened, people blame the whisperers. They're upset. They just lost their leader, a good man. But, Tara's more than capable of taking over, so that's what she's doing." Carl explained. "They'll be okay. You don't need to worry. The only thing you have to be prepared for is the multiple, multiple lectures you're going to get." Carl laughed.
I laughed a little and nodded. "Yea..."
"I'm glad you fixed things with Daryl, but he told me what happened. I'm sorry. That sucks about Luca." Carl sympathised.
"I'm just glad I know the truth." I smiled.
"Can we go to the park now?" RJ complained.
I grinned. "I promise to take you as soon as I'm allowed to leave the hospital. Deal?"
"Deal." RJ agreed.
"Mama's denied the Kingdom's fair again." Carl stated.
"Can't say I blame her." I admitted. "I want the fair. I want to help Kingdom, I do... But, we can't have our people die over it."
Carl nodded. "Yea, I get it. I just wish their was a way we could help everyone."
I smiled. "You always do, Carl. You're a good person. Sometimes, maybe too good."
