Chapter 9

My dad's desk sat empty in front of the door. Crap. The deputies were all gone except for one. He was asleep behind his desk. I walked around my dad's desk and grabbed a sticky note and quickly wrote what was going on.

Dad,
I got your note. Bella's been hurt in Phoenix. Dr. Cullen called me. I tried to contact you but you didn't answer. I'm headed to the rez now to talk to Sam, and Paul will probably go with me. I'm heading to Phoenix to be with Bella. Call me when you get this.
   -Love you, Liz

"Hey," Paul said as I climbed back into the car and threw my seatbelt on.

"He's not here. I left a note," I said. He was quiet the entire way to Sam's which made me nervous.

"Liz," Sam said, meeting me at the door.

"Bella's hurt," I said. Paul was standing behind me with a hand on my shoulder.

"Do you see how terrified he is?" Sam asked quietly although I knew Paul heard.

"He's scared I'm going to get hurt if I go to Phoenix," I said, turning slightly and pulling him closer to me. He seemed to relax when my hand grabbed his, which made me relax too.

"You're not going to Phoenix," Sam said sternly. "Especially not if they are there."

"Sam, my sister is hurt," I said.

"When has she ever cared about you?" Paul asked. "If the situation was reversed, do you think she'd come save you?"

"I'm not saving her," I said. "I just feel like this is something I have to do."

"Sam," Paul said, pleading with him to try and stop me.

"Come inside and we'll talk about this," Sam said.

"I'm going," I said, trying to stand up and leave ten minutes into a conversation with all three boys and Emily.

"Sam, I think it'll be good for her," Emily said.

"And we can't send her alone," Jared said. I don't know why, but all the guys have been super protective over me for as long as I can remember.

"What about your mom?" Paul asked. "She never put effort into seeing you. She didn't want you, and I know how you feel. I don't think you'll be able to control your anger towards her if you go alone."

"That's why you're going," Sam said, standing up and heading to the kitchen. He handed me about a hundred dollars. "It's not going to get you plane tickets, but it's better than nothing."

"I have a plan for the plane tickets," I said. "But, thank you."

"Go, be with your sister," he said. I hugged him, Emily, and Jared before Paul and I headed out the door to the Seattle. I tossed the keys at Paul and told him I need to make some phone calls.

The first one was to my dad. "Hey, its Lizzie. I know you won't get this for a while, and I am sure you've seen my note. I'll keep you posted on Bella's condition. Don't worry about me. Paul came with me. Um, I just wanted to let you know that I love you, and I'm only doing this in hopes of repairing the relationship between Bella and I. Call me when you can. I love you. Bye."

Next, I called Bella's phone hoping one of the Cullen's would answer it. Sure enough, on the third ring, Carlisle picked up.

"Hello," he said.

"Hey, It's Lizzie," I said.

"Lizzie, what can I do for you?" He asked.

"Paul and I are on our way to the Seattle airport to fly down, and we don't exactly have money for tickets," I said.

"Don't worry about it," he said. "I already have two tickets reserved for you guys on the 1:30 flight from Seattle to Phoenix and my son or I will meet you at the airport."

"Thank you, I honestly mean that," I said.

"Of course," he said. "It's the least we can do after Edward caused Bella to run away like this."

"Thank you again," I said. "I'll see you soon."

"See you then," he said and the line went dead.

"What was that about?" Paul asked looking at me quickly before looking back to the road.

"Carlisle got us plane tickets on the 1:30 flight out of Seattle," I said. Seattle was at least another hour and a half by this point, and it was already 10:00.

"That was generous," he said.

"Did you eat anything?" I asked. He shook his head no, but didn't say anything.

"Paul," I said, scolding him like a mother would. "Find a fast food restaurant and we'll get some breakfast."

"Sounds good to me," he said. It was only another ten minutes before he pulled into a McDonald's parking lot. He hopped out of the car like a two year old and literally almost ran into a car.
