Chapter 27
A few days later, I got a call from Paul telling me to come stay at Emily's for the weekend. He said he'd explain when I got there, and luckily my dad was going fishing so I got to go.
"What's going on?" I asked, walking into Emily's house, and being greeted by the entirety of the pack and the imprints.
"Come on," Paul said, leading me to the spare bedroom. That alone was enough to make me nervous, and then, throwing in the fact that the whole pack was here with their imprints, I wanted nothing more than to curl up in a ball somewhere and puke my guts out.
"What's going on, babe?" I asked, sitting on the bed with him next to me.
"You know how I told you I was training to fight a newborn army?" He asked.
"Yeah, why?" I asked, becoming even more on edge.
"There's a fight with them tomorrow," he said. My entire world froze. This could potentially be the last day I spend with Paul, my soulmate.
"Em," Paul called down the hall. I faintly heard footsteps approach and the door open before she started talking.
"Is she in shock?" She asked, and Paul must've nodded because she continued. "That's normal," no, there's nothing normal about this. "She'll be fine."
"Yeah, I'm alright," I said, finding my voice finally.
"I'll leave you two to talk than," Emily said, leaving the room. It was quiet for a while before either of us was willing to say anything again.
"Paul," I said, my voice cracking as my eyes brimmed with tears. "I can't lose you."
"I'm not going anywhere, babe," he said. "This is what we were destined to do. Our bodies were built to handle this stuff."
"I know," my voice shook as I tried to regain my composure. "I just don't want you to get hurt."
"Not gonna happen, babe," he said.
"I'm holding you to that," I said, leaning up and kissing his lips quickly before pulling back. I hope the shock of electricity that happens every time we kiss is there forever.
The entire time we were hanging out, I think Paul and I lost physical contact twice. One of us didn't want to go anywhere without the other.
I was sitting on Paul's lap on the couch in the living room when it occurred to me that Jake wasn't there. By this point, all the wolves that could stand it had said goodbye to their parents for what they knew could be the last time. Jake should've been there, but he wasn't.
"Where's Jacob?" I asked, looking at Sam for an answer.
"With Bella and Edward," he said. "They're at a campsite, trying to keep Bella safe."
"Is he," I trailed off, but Sam seemed to understand what I meant.
"Seth's going up there tomorrow morning," he said. I nodded and cuddled closer to the body heat Paul was giving off. I wasn't cold, but Paul's arms were the place where I felt safest.
I don't think I slept at all. Even after Paul and I headed to the guest room, we stayed up all night talking about nothing and everything. The conversations were pointless, but to us they were everything. Those conversations could easily have been the last we'd ever share.
