Chapter 21

My stomach was on fire. It literally burned to even think about moving. I tried to pry my eyes open, to wake up, but nothing worked.

"Babe," Paul's soft voice rang in my ears. I could feel the pressure of his hand on mine so I tried to squeeze my hand and let him know I was listening.

He must've noticed because he gasped and called for a doctor. I kept trying to open my eyes slowly, so the light wouldn't burn them. It took four more tries, but when I opened my eyes Paul, Sam, Emily, and my dad we're all there.

"You are one strong little girl," the doctor said as he walked in.

"I try to be," I said. My voice cracked from not using it, but otherwise I sounded fine.

"Well, you survived a coyote attack and didn't even cry when it happened," he said.

"I think that's called shock," I said.

"Glad to see you're still sarcastic as ever," Sam said.

"You need to rest. We'll talk more later," the doctor said before leaving the room.

"What the hell were you doing in the woods?" My dad asked the second the doctor was gone. I pushed the button that puts the bed up so I was able to look at my family and not the ceiling.

"I was with the guys. We went for a walk," I said. "I shoved Bella out of the way just in time to save her, but not myself."

"That was extremely kind of you, sweetheart," Emily said.

"Where is she anyways?" I asked.

"She disappeared last night with Alice to go save Edward," my dad said.

"I save her life, and am out for days and this is what she does?" I asked, anger rushing through my veins.

"Babe, calm down," Paul said.

"No. I'm sick of this crap that I take for her. It's going to end," I said. "I saved her life, and put myself in the hospital. How does she repay me? She leaves Dad a worried wreck, and goes to save someone who doesn't even want her around."

"You don't even know the half of it," my dad said.

"What's that mean?" I asked.

"Hon, calm down," Emily said, moving to sit on the bed with me.

"Babe," Paul said. He looked like he was about to cry again.

"Lizzie," my dad said. "Harry Clearwater died of a heart attack last night."

I collapsed into Emily's shoulder as I started sobbing. It killed my stomach for my abs to move that much, but the pain in my stomach didn't hold a candle to what I was feeling emotionally. Harry was like an uncle to me, and one of my father's closest friends. He helped name me, and raise me. His children were the siblings I never got. Without him I wouldn't have Paul.

I'm not sure how long I sobbed into Emily's shoulder, but I ended falling back asleep at some point.
