Chapter 20

The next day, Bella decided that she was going to see Jake.

"Bella, that's a bad idea," I said. I had known about Jake's phasing for a while, but Bella didn't. She just assumed he was going through some phase where he cut his hair and got a tattoo he'd regret in two months. She was sitting in the driver's seat of her truck driving down to see him while I tried to talk her out of it. Ever since her depression set in again Dad won't let her go anywhere alone.

"He can't just cut me out of his life like this. He promised me," she said. "He promised not to hurt me."

"Bella, come on. It's for your own safety," I said. She didn't listen, but continued to the Black House and pushed her way inside.

"I'm sorry for her Billy," I said. She'd just shoved her way into Billy's house and I was trying to talk her out of this.

"The guys are here," he said, nodding to the back lawn. I saw Bella storming across the yard and start yelling at Paul. Shit.

As I was walking up Bella slapped Paul across the face.

"Bella, get back," Sam said. I stepped between her and Paul and pushed her back as he phased.

Searing pain, stinging kind of like a million and two paper cuts, rushed through my core as I fell. Jake phased and started to fight Paul. He didn't even fight back. My eyes focused enough to see that. Paul was cowering as Sam started ordering the boys around. I focused on his words to try and hold onto consciousness. He was telling Quil and Embry to take Bella back to Emily's. He forced Jake and Paul to phase back as he dialed my cell phone.

I heard the words "coyote attack" as the warmth of the blood pooling into my shirt spread across my stomach. I'm pretty sure it was about to soak my sweatshirt too.

Paul was sitting by my head, apologizing like crazy and crying. He looked so scared and helpless.

"The great Paul Lahote is crying?" I asked softly. He looked at me with this intensity that I can't explain.

"Lizzie, this is gonna hurt," Sam said, trying to calm me down. If there was one thing Sam wasn't about to order Paul to do, it would be stop crying. He'd make Paul do anything other than that.

I nodded as Paul scooted closer to me and grabbed my hand. "Just squeeze my hand as tight as possible."

I gritted my teeth as Sam put pressure on the cuts across my stomach. They hurt like Hell, and I was only not crying because I was in freaking shock.

"Babe," Paul said.

"I'm fine," I said through gritted teeth. I wasn't about to let them know how much pain I was in.

"No you're not. An imprints pain is reciprocated to the wolf who imprinted on her. That's why I'm crying. It hurts like a bitch," he said.

"It's got Lahote in tears and not you. You're one hell of a badass," Jared said. I smiled at him, and went to make a sarcastic remark when the ambulance showed up.

They loaded me onto a stretcher before telling Sam only one of them could come with me. Sam went with me, and sent Paul to tell my dad and Jared to tell the others the story about what happened.

"Can you tell us what happened in more detail?" One of the paramedics said, talking to Sam.

"The six of us were hanging out, and went for a walk through the woods, something we used to do all the time. The coyote sprung for her sister, but Liz shoved her out of the way and took the attack herself. We scared it off somehow, and got her out of the woods," Sam said.

I rolled my eyes, but struggled to keep them open. I think Sam noticed because he  grabbed my hand, against the wishes of the EMT.

"What's her name?" The EMT asked.

"Lizzie Swan," I said softly.

"Chief Swan's daughter?" She asked.

"That's me," I said. My voice was really weak due to the blood loss.

"Hon, you've got to stay with us," she said.

I tried as hard as I could, but pretty soon, the light faded and I was swallowed up by darkness.
