Chapter 18
The house was eerily quiet when I heard the wolves howl. I rolled my eyes as I went to walk outside, but thought better of it as I saw a dark skinned man with red eyes and dreadlocks just outside the window. He was staring inside, right at me, causing me to freeze in place. I saw Sam's wolf out of the corner of my eye, and the movement caught his attention too. He took off running, followed by three of the wolves. The other, Paul phased just barely inside the tree line and came running into the house where I was still frozen in shock.
"Babe," he said, standing directly in my line of vision, and slouching enough that he could look into my eyes.
"Babygirl," he said, softening his tone. "Come on, talk to me."
"Hmm," I hummed, snapping out of my terror induced trance.
"Are you okay?" He asked. "Did he hurt you?"
"I don't know. He didn't hurt me," I said.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"I mean that I'm terrified. He's effing scary as Hell. So, physically I'm okay, but emotionally I'm not so sure," I said.
"I'm not leaving until I'm sure you're safe," he said. "I'll talk to Sam later, but right now I just need to know that you are safe."
"Paul, come on. Don't be stupid," I said. "Just stay here until Charlie gets home."
"I'll stay as long as I feel you're unsafe," he said. "You are my number one priority, and I can't have you getting hurt."
"I love you," I said, collapsing into his chest.
"I love you too, babygirl," he said, picking me up and carrying me to the sofa. He laid down with me in his arms and played with my hair while trying to calm me down. Sobs shook my entire body every few seconds.
"Shh, it's alright. You're safe with me," he cooed softly like he was trying to calm a scared toddler. I guess scared toddlers and scared teenagers aren't all that different.
I don't know how long we laid there like that, but we didn't move until my dad walked in. I was still sobbing, and once he realized it he rushed over to us.
"What's wrong?" My dad asked.
"I showed up and there was some guy just staring in the window. I ended up chasing him off, but she was frozen in fear when I came in. I've been trying to calm her down for a while now," Paul explained.
"Do you know who it was?" My dad asked. "I'll get him with trespassing and harassment and what ever other dumb laws I can find."
"I'm just a little shook up, that's all Dad. I'll be fine. I promise," I said, sitting up and wiping my eyes one last time.
"You sure don't look fine," my dad said.
"I know, but he just surprised me that's all," I said. "I don't think he'll be back though. Paul scared the sh-crap out of him."
"Nice save," my dad said.
"Charlie, if it's alright I want to stay the night and help you make sure that creep doesn't come back," Paul said. My dad agreed before ordering pizza and deciding tonight was going to be a movie night. Bella was hanging out with Jake, but once she got back she joined us for our impromptu family time.
