Chapter 17

Bella started to get better. She even started hanging out with Jake more. She was, however, still having nightmares about Cullen. Even Jake's dreamcatcher couldn't keep them away. She woke up at all hours of the night screaming. It was usually me who had to go in and wake her, but occasionally Dad would since we weren't exactly on speaking terms.

"Hey, Jake," I said. He showed up at the house this morning to talk to me before picking Bella up.

"Hey, your sister showed up at my house a couple days ago with motorcycles for me to help fix up," he said.

"I won't say anything," I said.

"Thanks, I just figured you should know why she's been down at my place so much," he said.

"Thanks, I appreciate it," I said, throwing a towel into my backpack.

"Where are you going?" He asked.

"Cliff diving with the guys," I said. "Well, hopefully Sam let's me." Embry just phased, so everything is up in the air right now, but Jake can't know that.

"Have fun, and be safe," he said as he and Bella left.

I climbed in the Jeep and headed down to the reservation, but ended up stopping behind Bella's truck.

"What's up guys?" I asked as I ran up to the two of them.

"They're fighting," Bella said.

"They're cliff diving Bella," Jake said.

"Scary as Hell, but a total rush," I said. "And those idiots were supposed to wait for me."

"You do that?" She asked.

"I told you, a total rush," I said.

She rolled her eyes, so I headed back to my car and finished the drive to Emily's.

"Hey sweetheart," she said as I walked in.

"Hey, the guys still down at the cliff?" I asked.

"Yeah," she said. "Sam doesn't want you down there with them right now."

"Of course not," I said, rolling my eyes.

"Hey, short stack," Jared joked as he walked into the house.

"Hey, giant," I retaliated.

I felt arms wrap around my waist before Paul whispered in my ear, "wanna get outta here?"

"Are you allowed?" I asked.

Instead of answering me, Paul started talking to Sam. "Hey, I'm gonna get Liz outta here so she doesn't get hurt."

"I wouldn't hurt her," Embry said.

"I know, Emb," I said softly. "He's just a hothead who can't stand the thought of me being around other guys."

"Not true," Paul said, mocking hurt.

"Yeah, it is," Jared said, causing us all to laugh.

"Oh, and Liz," Sam said. "You are on Jacob duty."

"He's getting close to phasing, and your the only one he trusts enough to be around," Paul said.

"Besides me, but we all know I can't go see him," Embry said, throwing the food he was eating back onto the table. "I'm going for a run."

I looked around the room. All the imprints were there. "This isn't fair to him, guys," I said.

"What isn't fair?" Paul asked.

"You're all dangling us in front of him. You all have your imprints here and he has no one," I said. "Hell, you won't even let him see his own mother."

"Calm down," Sam said.

"No," I said. "You may be in charge of this pack, but you can't control what I say. He's still human. He deserves to be treated better than this. Better than having your relationships dangled in front of him, taunting him all because he has yet to imprint."

"Calm down," Sam said again.

"Are you even listening to me?" I asked.

"I'm hearing everything you say," Sam said.

"Baby, calm down," Paul said, wrapping his arms around my waist.

"You guys aren't listening to me at all," I said, prying myself out of Paul's hands and walking to the door. "Don't even think about following me."

Driving home, all I could think about was how unfair it was to Embry. My gut instinct was telling me that I needed to calm down and return to Emily's, but I set that thought aside, dismissing it as the imprint bond.
