Questing Beast

Elizabeth's POV

Merlin and Arthur are out hunting again. With about half a dozen knights. I still haven't forgiven my so called father for imprisoning Morgana and I. Even she seems to have done so. She even saved his life from Tauren. I can't understand why she'd forgiven him so easily. I'm still avoiding him, well being alone with him.

Anyway, when I heard that Arthur and Merlin had returned minus a knight. I sneak into a secret room to listen in on their talk with Uther in the council chambers. "The creature you describe has all the characteristics of the Questing Beast" Gaius states.

"Surely that's a myth" Arthur states.

"According to the old books, the appearance of the Questing Beast is supposed to foreshadow a time of great upheaval" Gaius explains.

"Gaius, it's an old wives' tale" Uther tells him.

"Look, whatever it is, it's spreading panic. The people fear it will enter the city" Arthur explains.

"Then we must kill it. Arthur, gather the guard together. You ride at dawn" Uther tells him. I scowl, always sending Arthur to battle monsters, instead of going himself. I heard the doors open and closes. Which means Arthur and his knights must have left the room.

"I beg you, Sire, do not dismiss this. The beast is an omen. I've seen it come before, the night your wife Ygraine passed away" Gaius states. I take a deep calming breath. Just another remember of how selfish my 'father' is.

"I've told you not to speak of that night again. I have conquered the Old Religion. It's warnings mean nothing to me now. Arthur will destroy the beast and we will no longer suffer at its hand" Uther tells him. "Have you seen Elizabeth?" he asks.

"Rarely" Gaius states.

"She still seems to be angry with me" Uther states.

"Can you blame her sire? You threw her and Morgana into the dungeon. You have done many things she loathes"Gaius tells him.

"Morgana has forgiven me, why can't my own daughter?" Uther demands.

"That I can not answer, only she can" Gaius tells him. "I must go, I have tonics to prepare. Good day sire" he says and I left my secret room. I won't ever forgive Uther, never. Not even he were dying. He'd deserve it after all the pain and death he has caused. All the lies he has told. I called it a night.

I woke early and came to wish Arthur luck. "Arthur" I say as he goes to enter the square.

"Elizabeth, how are you?" he asks.

"I am fine, I wished to give you this" I state handing him a strip of cloth. "For good luck" I tell him.

"I accept, though I won't need luck" he tells me. As I tie to his arm.

"Be careful Arthur, one bite or scratch means death" I tell him. "I can't lose you like we lost our mother" I state. He kisses my forehead.

"I will return my sister, I always do" he assures me. "I must go" he says and he exists the castle. "You've seen the foe we face. It's a creature of nightmare, but you are the best knights in the realm. We can, and we will, kill it before it harms another citizen of our kingdom" he tells his knights drawing his sword. "For the love of Camelot" he states.

The knights draw their own swords. "For the love of Camelot!" they repeat. Morgana rushes out past me in her nightgown, hysterical. Crying Arthur's name.

"Morgana, what are you doing?" he asks her as they sheath their swords.

"You cannot face this!" she cries. Morgana tries to grab him, Arthur struggles with her.

"Morgana, go back to bed. There is nothing to be afraid of" he assures her.

"Please, Arthur. I have seen terrible things! You cannot go" she shouts. As I come down to join them.

"She probably had a bad dream, Sire. I'll take her to see Gaius" Merlin tells Arthur.

"No! I will not let you go!" she yells.

"Please Elizabeth, Merlin, get her inside" Arthur asks us. Arthur hands her off to Merlin and motions for the guards to come down. Merlin guides Morgana up the steps as I follow trying to calm her.

"I will make sure he's safe, My Lady. I promise" Merlin assures her. We reach the guards. Merlin leaves us and we go back inside.

"I got her" I tell the guards and they bow their heads. "Come Morgana, we can have some tea and you can tell me about your dream" I tell her gently.

"You can't let him go Elizabeth, I saw him die" she cries. I freeze. "The beast will kill him" she states.

"Are you sure?" I ask her. She nods her head. "I have faith in Merlin, he has never failed Arthur before" I tell her. As we reach her chambers. "How about I help you get ready today?" I suggest. She nods her head as Gwen appears. "Gwen, please get us some tea and snacks" I ask.

"Of course my lady" she says bowing her head and leaves. I help Morgana change and do her hair. Gwen soon returns and we have her join us for tea.

We hear a commotion down below. Morgana and I go to the window, she opens it. We see Uther walks through the Square with Arthur in his arms, Merlin and Gaius following. Uther collapses in his grief. Four knights come to bear Arthur inside as the King weeps on his knees. "No" I say and run from the room. I head for Arthur's room.

I beat the knights and they soon appear. "Place him on the bed, help me remove his armor" I order. They do so. "Leave us" I order as I hold Arthur's hand. "You can't die Arthur, I can't lose you. You promised" I cry as tears stream down my face. I stay with him all night even after Gaius had left after cleaning Arthur's wound.

I wake the next morning to see Arthur having a nightmare. He's fever has worsen. "Shh. Sleep, Arthur" Uther says and I glare at him. He has no right to be here. "Elizabeth, you should go rest. I can watch over Arthur" he tells me.

"No, you have no right to be here" I sneer. "You sent him out there, it's your fault he is dying!" I snap. "So get out" I tell him.

"You think I meant for this? I never wanted Arthur to be hurt" he states. Tears in his eyes.

"Go tell someone who believes your lies" I tell him. "Because I don't, it's your fault my brother is dying" I state as Gaius appears. "His fever is worse" I tell him. He nods his head and examines Arthur. "Where is Merlin?" I ask.

"Went to get some rare herbs" he states. I nod, Merlin must be looking for a way to cure Arthur. Otherwise, he'd be here. "You should sleep my lady, I will watch over him" he tells me.

"Very well, but make sure this man does not enter my brother's room again" I tell him nodding to Uther.

"He is your father, Arthur's father" he states.

"He is the cause of this and my mother's death. He has no right to be here or cry" I state and leave. I go down to the dungeons. "Dragon!" I call and he appears.

"You know I miss when you'd bring me meat" he states.

"Another time, has Merlin gone to find a cure for Arthur?" I ask him.

"Yes, I sent him" he states. "If he succeeds Arthur will live, though there is a price to pay" he tells me.

"To save a life, one must take it's place" I state. "I've heard that before" I mutter. "Do you know who will take Arthur's place?" I ask him.

"That I cannot answer" he tells me.

"I hope it's Uther, he deserves it" I state.

"Still angry?" he asks.

"I'll never forgive him, he is no longer my father" I tell him. "I'm thinking of running away, but he'd never allow that. He'd only leave me if he believed me dead" I state. "But I can't fake my death without help" I add.

"If you could free me, I'd help you" he states. I smile up at him. "You look tired little princess, go and sleep" he tells me gently. I nod and leave, heading for Morgana's room. I spend the night with her.

I woke the next day and relieved Gwen of tending to Arthur. Soon Gaius appears with Merlin. With a canteen. "What are you doing, physician? What are you giving him?" Uther asks her enters the room.

"It's a... It's a tincture made from the lobelia plant, an ancient remedy for poisonous bites" Gaius states.

"A cure?" Uther asks.

"We hope" Gaius states. Merlin and I help Arthur sit. While Gaius has him drink from the canteen.

"Do you really think it will have some effect?" Uther asks.

"It's our last resort, Sire. Perhaps you should allow him to rest" Gaius suggests. As we lay Arthur back on the bed. Gaius and Merlin exit. Uther sits on Arthur's other side.

"I will not leave him" Uther states and I scowl. "Will you ever forgive me?"  he asks me.

"No" I tell him as I dab Arthur's forehead with a cool cloth.

"Why? Morgana has" he states.

"She has no idea of what you've done" I state. "Nor does Arthur, otherwise he'd kill you himself" I tell him.

"What do you speak of?" he asks fawning innocence.

"I know how I was born, how my mother died and it's all your fault" I sneer. "I won't ever forgive you" I tell him as I get up. "We need fresh water" I state and grab a bucket leaving the room. When I return, I see Gaius has returned. Suddenly Arthur wakes and I drop the bucket, running over to him.

Arthur looks around and puts his head back down. I hug him gently. "Don't ever scare me like that again" I cry.

"I'm sorry Elizabeth" he says hoarsely.

"You need water" I state. "I'll go get you some and have a maid come to clean you bedding" I tell him. "Rest brother, you've been through a lot" I state and leave. I found Gwen and she said she'd tend to Arthur's room. When I return I see them talking.

"Tell me again what you said?" Arthur asks her.

"I don't remember" she tells him.

"Yes, you do" he states.

"No, I don't" she denies.

"Come on. Something about "the man I am inside" he states and I smile.

"No, I never said that" she tells him.

"Guinevere" he says.

"I have to get these washed, Sire" she tells him. Gwen exits hurriedly with the dirty cloths. Arthur grins in amusement.

"Well that's new" I state as I appear from behind the pillar. "How are you brother?" I ask.

"I am well" he states.

"Just so you know, I approve" I tell him.

"Of what?" he asks.

"You and Gwen" I tease.

"It'd never work" he states.

"Love doesn't care about station Arthur, you can't help who you fall for. Trust me, I know" I tell him as I look at my bracelet.

"Lancelot, you still care for him?" he asks.

"Yes" I tell him. "Not that it mutters, we may never see each other again" I state. "Now, you need rest" I tell him. Tucking him in. "I shall see you in the morning" I state and leave the room. I am glad Arthur is a live and well. But who is dying? Who will take his place in death? Guess I'll never know the answer.
