Edwin
Elizabeth's POV
It's been peaceful since the griffin attack. I miss Lancelot, a lot. But if dad ever knew found out I had a crush on Lancelot. He'd marry me off to the first person who asks. Anyway, I am relaxing in my chambers already dressed for bed when Gwen appears with a bouquet of flowers. "Oh their lovely" I say with a smile as she places them on the table. "Who are they from?" I ask.
"No idea, one arrived each for you and Morgana, maybe Arthur" she suggests. I sigh sadly. "You were hoping Lancelot" she says.
"I can't keep waiting for him" I state.
"Do you want me to get rid of them?" she asks me.
"No, that'd be a waste of perfectly good flowers" I tell her. I close the book I was reading by candle light. I go to bed. "Good night Gwen" I say.
"See you in the morning" she says with a smile. Before leaving. I lay my head down and drift off to sleep.
(Time skip) Third Persons POV
"Her body seems to have closed down like Morgana's" Gaius states as he examines Elizabeth.
"Why? You don't have an answer do you? Nothing you've tried so far has worked. It's been nearly two days. And what do you know?" Uther asks him.
"I fear they both may have some form of inflammation of the brain" Gaius tells him.
"What could cause such a thing?" Uther asks him.
"An infection, possibly, rest assured, I will do everything in my power to cure them, Sire" Gaius assures him. He leaves to go send Merlin to get more herbs.
(Next day)
Morgana and Elizabeth still aren't any better. They only have hours left. Which Gaius tells Arthur and Uther. "We cannot let them die!" Arthur exclaims.
"Arthur, please" Uther says.
"There's a man, he came to the castle yesterday. He claims he can cure them both" Arthur states.
"That's ridiculous. He doesn't know what's wrong with them" Uther tells him.
"He says he has a remedy that can cure all ills" Arthur tells him.
"Impossible" Gaius says.
"Well, for Elizabeth's and Morgana's sake, surely we should at least hear him out. I mean, what've we got to lose? Please, Father" Arthur pleads.
"Probably some charlatan hoping for a quick shilling" Gaius tells them.
"I don't care! If she's about to die, neither can Morgana. What harm can it do? Give him his shilling! If there's one chance in a million he can save them, then why not?" Arthur asks.
"Send for him" Uther tells Arthur. Who does so. Edwin managed to cure both Morgana and Elizabeth. He claims they both suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and not an inflammation on the brain. Uther was over joyed to see Elizabeth and Morgana alive & well.
Elizabeth's POV
I am in the throne room with father, Arthur, Morgana, some knights and this Edwin who saved Morgana & I. I have no idea who he is or how he did what Gaius couldn't. I am grateful to be alive. But something seems off about this scar faced man. "Name your reward" father tells him.
"I desire nothing more than the good health of my patients, Sire" Edwin tells him.
"There must be something I can do for you" father states.
"No. I will wait until the Lady Morgana and Princess Elizabeth are fully recovered, and then I will be on my way" Edwin states.
"Why don't you stay awhile? You could live here in the palace" father offers.
"No. I - I feel I would be trespassing. And you already have a court physician" Edwin states.
"I'm sure Gaius would be glad of your help" father tells him.
"It is a kind offer, but..." Edwin starts to say.
"Think about it. Dine with me later. Give me your decision then" father tells him.
"To dine with Your Majesty would be reward in itself" Edwin tells him with a bow. He leaves the room.
"How are you Elizabeth?" Arthur asks.
"I am fine, though I am unsure it's wise you allow this stranger to live here father" I say looking at him.
"He saved you and Morgana's lives" he states.
"True, but how? I think it'd be best to keep an eye on him" I tell them.
"You feel he is being less the honest?" Morgana asks.
"No, I don't know what it is. I just have a bad feeling" I state.
"I'll get Merlin to keep an eye on him" Arthur states.
"Very well if it will ease your mind Elizabeth, Merlin will watch Edwin" father agrees.
"Thank you father" I say with a smile.
(Next day)
We're in the throne room again. "I have been through the court medical records with a fine-tooth comb, Sire" Edwin states.
"And were your findings satisfactory?" father asks.
"With regret, I would have to say they were not" Edwin tells him.
"How so?" father asks him.
"Gaius is a great man, thorough, and dedicated" Edwin praises.
"But?" father asks.
"His methods are outdated. He has failed to keep up with the latest developments. This has led to a number of errors" Edwin states. Rubbish I think to myself. Gaius is always keeping up to date with the latest developments in medicine.
"Gaius has served me well for 20 years" father states.
"And one cannot blame him for the infirmity those years have brought. Age can be a terrible curse" Edwin states.
"Perhaps it is time to lighten his burdens. Have you given any more thought to my offer?" father asks him.
"Yes. I have considered it very carefully" Edwin tells him.
"Allow me some time to do the same" father tells him. Edwin bows and exits. Father gets up and goes to the table for a drink. Morgana follows him.
"Uther, you can't do this" she tells him.
"I agree" I add.
"You heard what he said. Gaius is old, he makes mistakes" Uther tells us.
"Gaius has treated me since before I can remember" Morgana states.
"Same with Arthur and I" I add.
"You can't cast him out" Morgana tells him.
"You both would have died if your care had been left to him. That's something I could not bear" father tells us.
"We know that, but ..." Morgana tries to say.
"I cannot risk something like this happening again" he tells us and leaves the room.
"We can't let him do this Arthur, Gaius has been a loyal physician to us for decades. We know nothing of this Edwin, how can we trust him with such an important position?" I ask him.
"I don't like it either, but perhaps it is time we have a new physician" he tells us.
"Then have Gaius train an apprentice, don't let father hire a stranger. Just because he saved mine and Morgana's lives" I tell him.
"I'll speak to him" he assures me. Before leaving. Morgana and I go to her chamber.
"Do you really think father will sack Gaius?" I ask Morgana.
"I hope not" she states. "I know he sees Gaius as a trusted friend and as you said Gaius has been a loyal physician to us for years" she adds.
"Exactly, he made one mistake" I state.
"Which nearly lead to us dying" she states.
"Yes, but then this Edwin comes out of nowhere and just happens to have a cure for us? No, something is off about all of this" I state. I then notice the dying flowers. "We got ill after we received the flowers" I state. "Did Gwen either find out who sent them?" I ask her.
"I don't believe so" she states.
"What is Edwin sent them and they were the reason we became ill?" I suggest.
"But then why would they still be here? Had they been the cause, would he have not removed them?" she asks.
"I don't know, but we should have Gaius examine them" I tell her. She agrees. However, before we could get Gaius to examine them. Father fires him and hires Edwin. I tried to find Gaius, but he had already left.
That night Edwin tried to kill my father. But ended up dead himself. Good thing Gaius returned and was able to save my father. He got his job back and I couldn't be happier. Not only that, he made Gaius a free man of Camelot. I wonder what will happen next?
