Chapter 2: A Rescue squad
Bam! Wham! Whack!
I shot upright in a frenzy and jumped out of bed after feeling a bunch of whacks and kicks at my sides. I quickly worked the blankets that were wrapped around my brother who was viciously thrashing around in his bed.
"HARRY!" I yelled. Of course I didn't really yell, I just talked loudly. The Dursleys did not like yelling, and to be honest, I wasn't the biggest fan of it either. Something about it just wasn't appealing to me.
Harry lifted his head and whipped his head over to see who had just ''yelled''. He breathed out a visible sigh of relief after seeing me standing in front of him.
"Oh, hi Eliza." Harry tried to sound collected, but I knew otherwise. He obviously was not calm and collected after a fit like that. The pains in my side would prove my point. Ouch, the one on my back was definitely gonna bruise. I stared at the boy until he confessed.
"I revisited the graveyard last night in my dream." he mumbled.
"So I've seen." I crossed my arms over my chest. "Harry... you can't keep doing this... you're ruining all your clothes from your cold sweats." The tiny voice in my head spoke "Nothing a good wash can't fix." though I chose to ignore it. "One day you're gonna have to tell someone." my voice was set in a dead-serious tone.
"Like who?" asked Harry sarcastically.
"Like Dumbledore."I retorted. Harry made his way across the room to the closet and closed the door behind him. He was getting changed.
Meanwhile, I untangled the mess of blankets and pillows and smoothed them out on the bed. They were still a bit sweaty which was mildly dissatisfying, but what could I really do about it.
"Harry," I started after he walked out of the closet sporting a pair of sweatpants and a green t-shirt. "Harry, listen to me-" I commanded grabbing his arm.
"Elizabeth, no!" he said. Bad move. After noticing my clearly hurt expression his annoyed demeanor softened. "He has more important things to think about than my silly dreams." I didn't think they were so silly.
I glanced out the window. It couldn't have been later than five in the morning. Although I didn't want to, knew I had to go back to sleep. I hadn't fallen asleep the last time until at least three and I was exhausted most of the time as it was.
"Go to sleep." Harry commanded, cocking his chin towards the bed.
I normally hated Harry telling me to do things. He was only a year older than me after all, but I was tired. So, I crawled into bed and tried to sleep. It was a pretty lame attempt. I watched as Harry paced around the tiny, messy bedroom that we called our own at 4 Privet Drive. And I watched as he sat down at the desk chair and stared out the window wistfully.
A late summers night breeze blew in through the open window. I closed my eyes and once again fell asleep.
----------------------------------------------
"We've been locked in here all day," I exclaimed as I paced up and down the room for the 500th time that day.
The cat flap opened and in came a bowl of canned, barely warmed soup. You've got to be kidding me...
I glanced at Harry who shrugged and walked over to it. He handed me the bowl. There was no spoon or even a fork to eat it with. I slowly raised the bowl to my mouth and took a big gulp from the ceramic rim. The soup was disgusting. I was very hungry though and at that moment I didn't care what it tasted like, as long as it would take away my hunger pains for a little while.
Harry took the bowl next and took a sip. He then took the remaining dregs and dumped them into Hedwigs cage for the owl to nibble on. She was quite the beautiful owl.
I took a look around the room and... began to pace.
This monotonous routine went on for four more days. I was locked inside the tiny bedroom with my brother all day and night except for a half hour when we were allowed to do what we wanted. What we wanted was usually to use the bathroom, step outside, or shower. To bad we were allowed in the kitchen....
The fourth day something changed. While I sat on the ground rearranging long abandoned books in the dusty shelf, Harry sat at the desk doing- I don't know what. The Dursleys appeared in the doorway. They announced that they were going to a competition thing about a lawn. What that was, I didn't know.
"Fine." responded Harry dully. He's quite the charmer.
I heard voices retreat down the stairs and shortly after the sound of a car leaving the driveway. I placed the last book back on the shelf.
"Ugh. I'm starved!" I exclaimed standing up to stretch.
"Same here, Liza." Harry's replied, barely sparing me a glance. A idea suddenly came to my head- one so crazy, it might just work.
"I wonder if..." there was no way Harry would let me test out my hypothesis. I darted across the room and hoisted myself across the desk to the window.
"Elizabeth!" Harry shouted, shooting out of his seat. I laughed maniacally.
"Haha, muggles. You thought you could win-"
"Elizabeth! Get out of the window!" Harry demanded as I pulled myself into a crouching position on the windowsill.
"Food..." I growled.
"Elizabeth, get your body back in here! Quickly, before you break the window!" I glanced down at how high up I was. There was not a chance that I would go through with this not-so-thought-put plan of mine. But that didn't mean I could have some fun...
"Are you calling me fat?" I exclaimed, sounding offended.
"What? Of course not, Eliza. Get out of the damn window before you fall out and die." Harry said as he reached over the desk to grab my arm. I sighed before sliding across the desk and stepping onto the ground next to Harry.
"I'm still hungry."
"I assumed. There are a few apple rings in my school trunk if you want them." My ears perked up with interest.
"How old are they?" I questioned.
"At least three months-"
"That's not that long." I interjected.
"But probably more since I got them during the school year." I held up my hands and plopped down onto the ground.
"I'm not risking it."
The room grew steadily darker. It had to be getting late in the evening. I sat on the floor playing solitaire with half a deck of cards and Harry laid on his bed waiting for Hedwig to return from bringing back letters that Harry had sent to Ron, Hermione, and Sirius. The problem was, I sucked at solitaire. I had no clue how to play. I tended to make it up as I went.
"This is the life. Bo, bo, bo, bo, bo. Bohemia." I sang quietly to myself. I was quite the fan of Tick Tick... Boom.
I had first heard the song in a music shop a few weeks earlier in the summer. It was a catchy enough musical, though I'd only ever head about three of the songs from it.
Suddenly, there was a big crash downstairs. I dropped my card that I had just picked up and turned to face Harry, who had since sat down next to me.
"Grab your wand," he whispered. I made a grab for it and saw Harry hold his firmly in his hand.
The two of us faced the bedroom door. My eyes locked on the golden lock that gave a loud click... meaning the door was open. How? Harry hesitated for a moment, giving me the perfect opportunity to play the hero and open the door. Freedom! Unfortunately there were still noises coming from downstairs. Not-so-free-freedom? Harry pushed in front of me after walking a few steps into the hallway.
"Stay behind me." I rolled my eyes but did as he said anyway. When we finally made it to the top of the staircase I saw that there were about eight people staring up at us. That was... unsettling.
"Lower your wands before you take someone's eye out." commanded a low voice.
I looked suspiciously at Harry. He returned my glance.
"Professor Moody?" he asked.
"Not professor, didn't get to teaching much, did I? Now get down here, both of you. We want to see you." responded Mad-Eye Moody.
I lowered my wand but Harry kept his up. Not fully, but enough. I felt extremely awkward. I was not good in these types of situations. Call me awkward, it's not a lie after all.
"It's alright Harry... we've come to take you away." said a voice that I recognized.
"Professor Lupin." I said calmly and I began to walk down the stairs before nodding for Harry to join me. He was standing at the top of the stairs with a suspicious look covering his features like a crow in a field. I had seen a crow earlier in the year, though I don't remember where.
"Why are we in the dark?" asked a woman's voice. "Lumos."
With that a magic light ignited from the tip of a wand held by a woman with violet hair. Based on her looks, she was the youngest, but it's hard to tell with magic-folk sometimes. She was quite beautiful.
"Are you sure it's him Remus?" queried Moody. He mirrored the suspicious expression Harry had worn just a few moments before.
"What form does your Patronus take, Harry?"
"A stag." Answered Harry.
"That's him." said Lupin.
Harry transcended down the staircase and I knew everybody was watching him. I have to admit I did cower behind him a bit until we made it to the bottom of the stairs and I hid in the shadows where no one seemed to notice me. Being quiet has its advantages, you know. I'm not saying I am always quiet, not even implying it in fact, but I am sometimes quiet. This being one of those times.
"How are you?" asked Professor Lupin.
"Fine." There was silence for a few minutes. "You're really lucky the Dursleys are out." mumbled Harry, clearly trying to change the subject.
"We're not lucky. We lured the Dursleys out to a fake best suburban lawn competition." a voice explained in a smug tone. A small smile formed on my lips. Well played, wizards and witch.
"We are leaving, aren't we? Soon?" asked Harry suddenly.
"Once we get the all clear." answered Mad-Eye. As he glanced around the small area we had gathered.
Harry suddenly turned around to look for me.
"Elizabeth?" he called. I internally groaned. Of course my brother had to be the one to force me out of hiding.
"Who's he looking for?" asked the girl with purple hair.
"Eliza?" He called again, before I got the chance to respond.
"Come out. I can see you Elizabeth." said Moody. I wouldn't of believed him except for the fact that he was staring straight at me. Moments later everyone else was too. I walked into the light and waved awkwardly.
"Hi." I murmured.
"Ahh, she's just like Lily." exclaimed the woman again. I had to learn her name.
"Hello, Elizabeth. It's nice to see you again. I hope you got my letter?" greeted Lupin.
"Um- yes- Lupin, I did." I responded quietly.
Everyone stared at Harry and I for a long time. Finally, Harry coughed making them all snap back into reality.
"Um- where are we going?" he asked.
"The Burrow?" I added.
"No, not the Burrow," said Lupin motioning us into the kitchen where we were followed by the other wizards and witch, who still stared at us in awe.
"We've made headquarters somewhere else. Somewhere undetectable-"
"This is Alastor Moody." Lupin interjected, motioning towards Mad-Eye.
"Yes." I said cautiously.
"We know-" Harry finished. Lupin smiled at us sadly.
"This is Nymphadora-" continued Lupin gesturing to the witch.
"Don't call me Nymphadora, Remus... It's Tonks-" Tonk's said sharply.
"This is Nympahdora Tonks who prefers to only be known by her Surname." he continued on.
"Kingsley Shackleboat, Elphias Doge, Dedalus Diggle, Emmaline Vance, Sturgis Podmore, and Hestia Jones." he gestured to each as he said the people's names. Clearly I was wrong about the only being one witch.
"A lot of people volunteered to come get you-" said Lupin trying to lighten the mood.
"The more the better, Potters... We're your guard." said Moody. He was a very intimidating person.
"We're just waiting for the signal to tell us we're ready. About fifteen more minutes." spoke Lupin as he glanced at a old watch on his wrist.
"Very clean the muggles, aren't they?" piped up Tonks as she gestured to the kitchen. I laughed slightly causing everyone to glance at me again. Feeling bashful, I lowered my head a bit. This was very weird...
"Listen," said Harry suddenly. I had started to cower slightly behind him again. "What's been happening? I haven't heard anything where's Vold-"
"Shh-" cut Moody. "We're not discussing anything here. It's to risky."
"Anyway," said Tonks. "I know very little about you?" She said as she pointed at me. The room went silent and everyone was staring at me again. Could thy stop doing that? It didn't seem like it.
"Umm-" I began to look around the room. "I'm E-Elizabeth c-call me E-Eliza. I'm Harry's younger sister." I said nervous, stepping into the light. Why did I introduce myself as "Harry's little sister"? I never wanted to be known as that.
"Hmm-" said Moody staring suspiciously at me. I fought the urge to start sobbing. The real Moody was even more scary than the fake Moody from last year. But that was another story.
"Cute little thing, aren't you?" mused Tonks as she stepped closer to me.
"Um-" I quavered.
Moody whispered something to Lupin, Lupin whispered back. I pinched Harry's arm nervously. He squeezed mine back and it gave me strength. I eased up a bit before walking to the table and taking a seat.
"Elizabeth-" started Lupin. "What house and year are you in at Hogwarts?" He asked, staring at Mad-Eye.
"I'm in my 4th year at Hogwarts and Gryffindor." I recited. You can say I had been practicing saying that during the summer... I hold no regrets.
"Sorry, had to check." confessed Lupin.
"So-" I began. "Does Dumbledore know about headquarters?"
"Yes, he formed the first Order." boomed Moody.
"You better get packed if you want to be ready for the signal." advised Lupin.
"I'll help you." volunteered Tonks. The two started walking upstairs together.
"Harry-" I began.
"Eliza, it's okay." whispered Harry, practically reading my thoughts. We should probably spend less time together. I went upstairs with them anyway.
"Do you think purple is my color?" asked Tonks as she looked at herself in our cracked bedroom mirror.
I placed a couple of books into my trunk and grabbed a pair of black shorts. Currently, I was wearing a purply-blue shirt with a crescent moon on it along with a pair of shorts that matched, even though I didn't get hem together.
"I think it makes me look to peaky." she continued. Tonks closed her eyes and her hair turned bubblegum pink. When she saw how I was staring at her bewildered she laughed.
"I'm a metamorphagus, I was born one. Got top marks in concealment and disguise during my auror training." she explained proudly.
"Wow," I replied as I snapped down the lid of my school trunk. "Be right back."
"I'm going downstairs," I declared awkwardly as I left the room leaving Tonks with Harry.
After leaving the bedroom and being in the upstairs hallway I felt relieved. But as I remembered there were more people downstairs, I again felt a little nervous and awkward. Bracing myself with a deep breath, I went down the staircase.
"Elizabeth," said Lupin. "Are you okay? You look a bit panicked,"
"What? No... I'm fine... Fine..." I said but really I felt awful.
Lupin walked towards me and all around me went black...
Of course.
