Chapter 5: Defense Against The Dark Arts
I walked into Harry mad my room that Ron and Hermione were sitting in with Harry one afternoon during the last week of summer holiday.
"Malfoy can't be a death eater?" Said Ron laughing. I heard it through the door.
"It would make sense his dad's in Azkaban," said Harry. I walked in suddenly and the three of them all looked at me.
"Hi," I said awkwardly.
"Hello," said Hermione. She looked suspiciously at me. I don't know why. So, I walked over to my trunk and grabbed opened the lid.
"What have you been up to?" Asked Ron.
"Been outside for a while," I said.
"What were you doing?" Asked Harry.
"Walking around the house... Visiting the chickens," I said calmly.
"Oka-" but whatever Harry had said for the rest of that time was being cut off. I got extreme pain in my left wrist. It felt like my arm was being cut off. I had fallen backwards onto the ground of the room and was screaming. I almost grouches the scar until Hermione grabbed my arm.
"Let it go-" I screamed. "Let it- ahhhh," I screamed. Harry and Ron were on my right side staring down at me. Harry was grabbing my right wrist.
"Get off of me-" I screamed.
"Come to me," whispered a voice inside of my head quietly. It was a cold crisp and evil voice. I was writhing in agony from the pain this scar was causing me,"
"Elizabeth," said Harry.
"ELIZABETH!" He screamed again. I was calling down. That voice had bought me back to my senses.
Hermione was staring down at the scar I could see through my half closed eyes.
"Harry," she said urgently. "It's glowing," she said.
Then all went black...
-------------------------------------------------------
"Elizabeth?" Hermione gently shook my arm as I laid on my bed.
"Hermione?" I asked quietly. I felt my left wrist was numb.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
"Fine... What happened?" I asked as I leaned up on top of the bed. I then saw Harry and Ron standing beside me.
I felt that I was shaking slightly.
"Well... You were trying to touch the scar mark and it was glowing, we had to restrain you from it," she said.
"Yes, well, I'd better be getting back outside," I said trying to get up.
"Wait... About that," said Ron.
"What?" I asked as I sat on the edge of the bed.
"What are you doing out there? I mean you came in today looking extremely pale and malicious," said Ron.
"Because I had been outside in the apple orchard and ran back all the way to this room," I said with a laugh.
"Oh, well... Okay," said Ron.
"Elizabeth?" Asked Harry.
"What?" I asked as I walked towards the door.
"Why does Draco listen to you and only you?" Asked Harry.
"I-I have no clue," I said calmly. As I left the room before they had a chance to question me more.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the extendable ears that I had gotten.
"It's worse than we thought-" said Hermione anxiously.
"Do you think it could resold be that though?" Asked Ron.
"I don't know. I doubt it," said Harry. I left the hall and found Ginny.
-------------------------------------------------------
We arrived at Kings Cross Station and saw two grim looking Aurors there waiting for us. He escorted Harry and myself through the barrier and into Platform 9 3/4. I didn't like the Aurors they chose for us, they were very rude.
The Weasleys met us a few minutes later.
"Everybody on the train, quickly, quickly," said Mrs. Weasley.
I followed Ron and Hermione up to the prefect carriage. It was a long carriage and there sat Draco Malfoy and Pansy Parkinson. I sat next to Ron and Hermione. My year of Gryffindor prefects and their year were paired for patrolling the halls. We talked for a while. Before being interrupted.
"Hello, Ellie," he said looking over at me.
"Remember Eliza... Calm," said Hermione in a whisper. I nodded curtly.
"My name is Eliza, where you heard my name was Ellie I don't know but I assure you it is not," I said pleasantly.
"I didn't hear... I saw," he pointed to his left wrist which was covered by a sleeve. I looked around at the other prefects. My heart started to race.
"Shut up, Malfoy," Ron said defensively.
"Hey, do you think we should pay troll now?" I asked Ron and Hermione and my other partner of the boy in my year... Dean Thomas.
"Your shift isn't for another fifteen minutes-" said Draco.
"Yes, let's go now. Well start early," said Hermione. We patrolled the halls and finally got to the compartment where Luna Harry and Ginny sat.
"Where's Harry?" I asked.
"He left a while ago, hasn't come back yet," said Luna airily.
-------------------------------------------------------
Once the train arrived at Hogwarts Harry still wasn't back. We assumed that he had gone to a different compartment and he would meet us inside, though none of us were very convinced.
While in our carriage up to the building I sat next to Neville.
"Hi, Neville," I said calmly.
"Eliza, how as your summer?" He asked happily.
"Normal... Did you get a new wand... Since the other one broke?" I asked thinking about how Ollivanders was closed.
"Oh... Yeah, I was one of the last few wands Ollivander sold before he went missing," he said.
We sat at the Gryffindor table in silence. The only person eating was Ron. After a minute of him eating Hermione looked disgusted. She started to hit him with her book.
"Will you stop eating?" She said. "Your best friend is missing," she said.
"He'll be here in a minute with a flock of unicorns or something calm down. He'll be back you'll see," he said calmly.
"Yes, Ron it's true he always ends up back here but it's different now, he's never kept us waiting this long..." I said quietly. Ginny hugged me slightly.
Suddenly, the Great Hall doors opened and Harry and Snape came rushing through the the doors.
"He's covered in blood-" said Ginny looking at Harry. "Why is he always covered in blood?" She asked concerned. He quickly sat down next to me and grabbed the backing off his plate. He held it to his nose.
"Where have you- blimey, what's happened to your face?" Said Ron staring at Harry.
"Why what's wrong with it?" He asked as he looked at his reflection in a spoon.
"Your covered in blood, come here-" said Hermione.
"Tergeo," said Hermione the blood on Harry. The blood went off of Harry.
"Thanks-" he said.
"What happened?" I asked as he readjusted himself on the bench next to me.
"Nothing... I'll tell you later," I understood what he meant. A bunch of people were paying attention to what he was saying including the Gryffindor ghost.
"The speech should be soon-" I said as Dumbledore got onto the the banister.
It was the normal speech until we found out that Professor Slughorn would be potions master.
"So then who's going to be D.A.T.D.A." I asked urgently but I already knew.
"Professor Snape will be taking over the post of Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher," said Dumbledore. I stared at him in disbelief.
"Snape?" Harry whispered.
"This is gong to be.... Interesting?" I said quietly.
" I cannot emphasize strongly enough how dangerous the present situation is, and how much care each of us at Hogwarts must take to ensure that we remain safe. The castle's magical fortifications have been strengthened over the summer, we are protected in new and more powerful ways, but we must still guard scrupulously against carelessness on the part of any student or member of staff. I urge you, therefore, to abide by any security restrictions that your teachers might impose upon you, however irksome you might find them — in particular, the rule that you are not to be out of bed af- ter hours. I implore you, should you notice anything strange or suspicious within or outside the castle, to report it to a member of staff immediately. I trust you to conduct yourselves, always, with the utmost regard for your own and others' safety."
Dumbledore's blue eyes swept over the students before he smiled once more.
"But now, your beds await, as warm and comfortable as you could possibly wish, and I know that your top priority is to be well- rested for your lessons tomorrow. Let us therefore say good night. Pip pip!"
We got up and led the first years to their dormitories. As prefects it was my responsibility. I met back with Harry and Hermione in the common room.
"Well, there's one good thing about Snape getting the defense against the dark arts post-" said Ron with a laugh.
"And what might that be?" I asked sarcastically examining my left wrist in front of the fire.
"The jobs jinxed- no ones lived for more than a year-" he said. I smiled a bit.
Slowly we each started to laugh.
"Alright I'm off to bed," I said.
"Remember Liza, long sleeves tomorrow or cover it up somehow-" said Harry. I went up into my dormitory, put on some pajamas and went to sleep.
-------------------------------------------------------
The next morning I went to all my classes as normal. Professor Slughorn was very impressed about my potions skills. Then at the end of the day came D.A.T.D.A., I walked to it slowly and when I got there I hid with Ginny in the back of the classroom. I averted my eyes from Snape as much as I could.
"Hey," I said to Ginny as I slid into the seat next to her.
"Where have you been?" She asked me as she pulled out her textbook.
"I was coming here," I said as I pulled out my own and took out a quill.
The lesson was about Patronuses and how to conjure them. But just the theory. Nape walked around.
"Now, tell me," he said as he walked a few desks in front of Ginny and me. "Can any of you perform a Patronus charm?" He said slowly. Around the room people murmured to each other asking. Ginny and I could because of the D.A. last year. I knew Snape would know this but hoped he wouldn't mention it.
"No one?" He said walking closer to me and Ginny. I looked as far away as I could from Snape without drawing attention to me.
"Aha," he said as he stopped in front of Ginny and me sat. "Miss Potter I believe you can... Am I wrong?" I didn't look at him but just breathed deeply as my heart beat faster.
"No," I said quietly.
"So, you can perform a Patronus charm?" He asked. I sighed in annoyance.
"Yes I can," I said moving my head slightly upward. I could see that Snape was staring down at me.
"Do one for the class," he said gesturing for me to stand and do my Patronus.
"I'd prefer not-" I said looking at him for the first time.
"Do it Miss Potter... Unless you wish for a detention," he said maliciously.
I stood up slowly into the aisle of my desk.
"Now... Put your wand in your left hand , you know how this works," he said. I put my wand into my right hand so that my scar wouldn't be revealed.
"I thought I said left hand-" he said. I nodded but kept it in my right hand.
"Well then put it in your left hand," he said and he touched my left wrist on the scar. It felt like a bunch of needles were being stabbed into my arm and I struggled to keep standing still from the pain of Snape touching my left wrist. I pulled my hand away and grabbed my wand with my left hand.
"Expecto Patronum," I said and a blue translucent red fox erupted from the tip of my wand and pranced around the room. The class was mesmerized as I stared at Snape as anger filled me.
"You may sit now," he said to me quietly. I glared and girly and said. "Thanks..." Then sat at my seat. Ginny leaned towards me.
"That bastard," she said. I nodded in agreement. It was going to be a long year.
-------------------------------------------------------
After a few days of school Harry had gotten detention with Snape and I was close. We both and so much homework that we would barely see each other. I would work on homework late into the night and resort the urge to press my burning scar.
"Goodnight," I said after a long night of work to Harry.
"Goodnight," he responded.
