Chapter 4: Diagon Alley

"Tom Riddle," I said as I stood in the archway of a dark room.

"Ellie... Glad to see you finally showed up," he said.

"Finally?" I screamed in outrage. "I took three minutes to get here! And I'd say that's pretty good considering-" I continued.

"Quiet!" Said Tom. I sighed.

"Why do you need me Tom?" I asked. "Uh-" he said. I rolled my eyes.

"Voldemort what do you want," I continued.

"That's not a good way to talk to your master deary," he said. "Crucio!" He screamed. I screamed in agony as pain flushed over me. When it ended I stood back up from the ground.

"S-so," I breathed angrily out of breath. "To torture me I see," I said.

"Well, I wouldn't have to if-"

"No tom "Voldemort" you e never had to do this. And you know what?" I said strongly.

"What Ellie?" He said.

"I'm done with this,"

"Imperio!" He screamed. I resisted. But I'll admit it was hard to not do what he told me to.

"Elizabeth!" Screamed Harry as he shook me awake.  I shot up and looked around the room.

"What happened?" Asked Harry.

"Ellie... Uh- I resisted Tom- Voldemort," I said.

"Are you okay?" Asked Harry.

"I'm fine," I lied.

"Then why are you getting out of bed?" Asked Harry as I walked across the room.

"Harry-" I sighed.

"Elizabeth-" He said back.

"Fine, I wanted to step outside for a bit," I said calmly.

"Elizabeth you know we aren't allowed to," he said.

"Harry it's the only thing that calms me down," I said.

"Oh... Alright- fine! But I'm going with you," he said.

"Harry-" I started.

"No, let's go," he's aid and with that we quietly went outside of the Burrow. It was a dark night and even darker because of rain that was falling calmly onto the dirt road. Harry and I sat on a old fence post staring at the rain getting soaked. We sat like this for at least a hour.

"Harry-" I said calmly.

"Yes?" He asked.

"It's just... Things are changing... Aren't they?" I asked. Harry hesitated.

"Well, yes," he said.

"What about Hogwarts?" I asked.

"I don't know," said Harry staring at his hands.

"I can't wait to get back there... To our home," I said.
-------------------------------------------------------

As the days continued everyone had to stay in the confine nets of the Burrow. When it wasn't raining and it was bright outside, we would play quidditch in the apple orchard. It would usually be Ron and Harry against Ginny Hermione or myself. When Harry's birthday arrived I was in extreme pain. My dark mark scar was almost constantly burning, Voldemort was calling on the death eaters constantly. I did as Dumbledore said though. I did lot ouch it when the scar burned.

On Harry's sixteenth birthday Lupin came in looked pale and his clothes were ragged. Mrs. Weasley passed everybody large pieces of birthday cake.

"There have been more dementor attacks," said Lupin. It was quiet in the room as we listened to what Lupin had to say. Being at the burrow would have been very fun and happy except every day came news of deaths, disappearances, and attacks.

"And they've found Igor Karkaroffs body in a shack up north. The dark mark has been set over it- well, frankly, I'm surprised he stayed alive for even a year after deserting the death eaters; Sirius's brother, Regulus, only managed a few days as far as I can remember," he said. I got nervous at these words. Would the death eaters come hunting me after I didn't show up to the calls that my dark mark scar was giving me? Mr. And Mrs. Weasley now knew about it because they were in the Order Of The Phoenix. I also let Ginny know about the dark mark. She was pretty nervous at first but then she called down after her parents told her that it wasn't my choice and was forced on me.

"Yes, well. Perhaps we should talk about something diff-" started Mrs. Weasley.

"Did you hear about Florean Fortescue, the man who runs-" said Bill.

"The ice cream shop in the Diagon Alley, he used to give me free ice creams. What happened to him?" Said Harry.

"Dragged off by the look of his place-" said Bill with a frown.

"Why?" Asked Ron.

"Who knows? Must of upset them somehow, he was a good man, Florean," continued Bill.

"Talking of Diagon Alley, looks like Ollivander is gone to," said Mr. Weasley.

"The wand maker?" I asked.

"That's the one. Shops empty, no sign of trouble. No one knows whether he left voluntarily or was kidnapped," said Mr. Weasley. Ginny looked completely startled.

"But wands- what'll people do for wands?" Asked Ginny.

"They'll make do with others- but Ollivanders was the best. And if the other side had got him, it's not so good for us," said Lupin.

The day continued with rain. But our Hogwarts letter arrived. It was my O.W.L year this year so I knew I would have a rather busy year. Harry had been made Quidditch captain. I had been made a prefect which was very exciting news. Hermione and Ron were the prefects in Harrys year. I was actually very sure purses when I found out I had been made a prefect, I thought it might have been Ginny or someone else.

"Well, I don't suppose we can hold off a trip to Diagon Alley any longer as long as we have these," said Mrs. Weasley as she sighed looking down at Rons list. "We will go one Saturday as long as your fathers home. I won't go anywhere without him," said Mrs. Weasley.

Bill had gotten Harry and me our gold because it was taking up to five hours to get it on a normal basis. The security had been tightened by the goblins. It was a very overcast day on Saturday. We left the house and saw that in yard in front of the house was a Ministry Of Magic car. We had it explained to us that it was because of Harry and myself that we got to use the car. We would be getting more security at the leaky cauldron.

Harry had told me earlier that Dumbledore wanted him to always have his invisibility cloak on him. I never had my wand a inch away from my hand. Outside of the Leaky Cauldren I looked for the Aurors. Instead, I got a happy surprise... Rubeus Hagrid stood outside of the Leaky Cauldron. He pulled Harry into a hug.

"Harry! Buckbeak- I mean Witherwings will be so happy to see you. I mean he's so happy to be back in the open air-" he booked with his heavy accent.

"Glad he's pleased!" Said Harry with a laugh. "We didn't know security meant you," said Harry.

"Oh yeah, the Ministry wanted to send a bunch of Aurors but Dumbledore said I'd do... Just like old times ain't it," said Hagrid. I thought back to the day Hagrid had knocked down the door and declared Harry and myself witches and wizards. Though I couldn't go to Hogwarts yet it was the happiest day of my life.

We walked through the bar passed tom and into the back of the shop. After Hagrid tapped his pink umbrella on the bricks Diagon Alley was revealed to us. But it had changed. Diagon Alley had always been a colorful lane of many wizarding shops full to the brim with magic. Now, it looked dark and gloomy. Many windows and doors were boarded up and a few had broken windows. I saw some small shacks that had appeared out front of some shops that sold amulets that didn't work as Mr.Weasley had proved. There were wanted posters of known death eaters including Bellatrix. My scar had started burning again as I looked at her face in the picture. Voldemort was calling... I was not answering.

"Here we should go to Madame Malkins first-" said Mrs. Weasley nervously.

"Molly, it doesn't make sense for us all to go to Madame Malkins. Why don't the kids go with Hagrid and we go to Flourish and Botts and get the school books?" Said Mr. Weasley.

"I don't- oh, alright Hagrid be careful/" said Mrs. Weasley.

"I'll stand guard outside alright?" Said Hagrid as he looked in the shop.

"Okay," I said as we entered the dark shop. Anyone who was in Diagon Alley was not alone. Everyone looked anxious as they walked in their fight groups and did their shopping quickly.

"Now dear, your mothers quite right. None of us are supposed to be going wandering around on our own anymore-" said the voice of Madame Malkin who owned the shop.

"Watch where you sticking that pin will you-" said a boy with a pale face and blond hair. I looked over and rolled my eyes as I saw Draco Malfoy. He walked over to a mirror and examined himself before noticing us behind him.

"I was wondering what that smell was mother. A mudblood just walked in," he said with a smirk to Hermione.

"Now, there's no need for that language in here-" said Madame Malkin.

"Who blacked your eye Granger? I want to send them flowers-" said Draco with a sneer. Harry and Ron had both drawn their wands.

"Okay, there are no needs for wands in my store-" said Madame Malkin. I stood in front of Harry and Ron, furiously. I heard Hermione whisper something to Ron and Harry.

"No, don't , honestly... It's not worth it-" she said to them both.

"That's quite enough- Madame please!" Said Madame Malkin. I was glad that Ginny wasn't here at the moment. She would have killed Draco by now but her mother had made her stay with her and her father.

Narcissa Malfoy strolled from behind a clothes rack. I glared at her angrily, she had been a death eater from the beginning but she didn't have a tattoo.

"Put those away," she said sharply as she strolled towards us. "If you ever try to attack my son again I will make sure it's the last thing you do-" she said.

"Really?" Said Harry as he pushed past me towards Narcissa.

"Harry-" I whispered urgently.

"Going to get a few of your death eater pals now are you-" he said. Madame Malkin clutched her heart and squealed. I started scratching my wrist ferociously it had just stopped burning.

"I see your doing well, Ellie," said Narcissa glaring at me scratching my wrist. I covered it with my sleeve of my shirt and almost slapped he right then.

"Eliza-" I corrected.

"Really- you shouldn't accuse- a dangerous thing to say- wands away please-" said Madame Malkin towards Harry's comment. Harry didn't lower his wand.

"I see that Dumbledores favorite has been given a false sense of security, Potter. Well, Dumbledore won't always be around to help you," said Narcissa with a wicked smile.

"Well... Look at that, he's not here now. So, why don't you have a go at me? Go on? They might be able to find you a double cell in Azkaban with your loser of a husband," said Harry mockingly.

"Don't you dare talk to my mother like that, Potter," said Draco.

"Shut up, Draco," I said.

"It's alright Draco," said Narcissa placing a hand on her sons shoulder. The room felt tense. "I expect Potter will be reunited with his dear Sirius before I am reunited with Lucius," she said pleasantly.

They both left the store angrily as Draco tore hide ones over his head. Hermione was now physically hoping my arm.

"Got everything?" Asked Hagrid as we came out of the shop with our new robes.

"Yes," I said pleasantly.

"Good," he said.

"Did you see the Malfoys?" Asked Harry.

"Yes, but they wouldn't dare make trouble in the middle of Diagon Alley. Harry, don't worry about them," he said pleasantly.

We met up with everyone again then stopped at apothecary and eeylops and brought some potions ingredients. Then we arrived outside of Fred and Georges joke shop. It was the brightest store in all of Diagon Alley. They had funny bright signs that said funny slogans with what they advertised beneath them.

We went inside the shop and saw that there were many people insides everyone who was inside seemed mainly happy. It was a wonderful sight to see people smiling again.

There were quills that did spell check and smart answer and self inking things. Fake wands that turned into plastic chickens or goats littered big bins near walls. There was a potion that gave you a thirty minute day dream that Hermione was picking up and reading the back of.

"You know," she said. "That really is extraordinary magic," she said with a laugh.

"For that," said a voice behind her. "You can have one for free," said Fred. He was standing behind us. I laughed at his attire of magenta robes.

"How are you Potters?" He asked us.

"Fine," I said.

"Good," said Harry.

"What happened to your eye Hermione?" He asked as he looked at her bruised eye.

"Your punching telescope," she said angrily.

"Oh blimey, I forgot about those. Here... Take this," he said as he handed Hermione a container. "Just fab it on the bruise will be gone within a hour," he said handing it to her.

"Come one I'll give you a tour," said Fred to Harry. I left and went with Ginny.

"Haven't you girls found our WonderWitch products yet?" Asked Fred a so looked at the day dream detonators with Ginny and Hermione still. "Follow me," he said and we did to the corner of a shop where pinks and purples glowed. I eyed Fred suspiciously. He laughed at me.

"There you go. Best range of love potions you'll find anywhere..." He said. Ginny, Hermione, and myself hung back as a few girls giggled around the display.

"Do they work?" Asked Ginny skeptically.

"Certainly they work, for twenty four hours depending on the boys weight in question," said Fred.

"And the attractiveness of the girl-" said George suddenly appearing at our side. "But we're not selling them to our sister. Not when she had about five boys on the go from what we've hear-" he said sternly.

"Whatever you heard from Ron is a big fat lie," she responded calmly.

"Your not getting them either," whispered Harry. I rolled my eyes.

"First I don't have to listen to you and second of all I wouldn't get them anyway," I said happily to Harry.

"What's this?" Asked Ginny as she took a pink pot off of a shelf.

"Guaranteed ten second pimple vanisher," said Fred. "Don't change the subject. Now, are or are you not currently going out with a boy named Dean Thomas?" He asked Ginny.

"Yes, I am," said Ginny. "And last time I looked he was definitely one boy not five. What are those?" She asked pointing to a number of pink and purple balls of fluff that squeaked.

"Pygmy puffs, miniature puffskeins, we can't breed them fast enough. So what about Michael Coroner?" Said George quickly. Ginny and I were petting the Pygmy puffs thought cage.

"I dumped him, he was a bad loser. They're so cute!" She said.

"They're fairly cuddly, yes," concluded Fred. "But, your moving through boyfriends a bit fast, aren't you?" Asked Fred.

"It's none of your business," she had her hands on her hips and was staring at them. I saw Ron appear.

"And I'll thank you- not to tell tales about me to these two," she said at Ron who had his arms heavy with merchandise.

"That's three galleons, nine sickles, and a Knut," said Fred counting the packages in Ron's arm. "Cough it up," he said.

"I'm your brother," said Ron.

"And that's our stuff you nicking. We will take off the Knut," said George.

"But I haven't got three galleons and nine sickles," said Ron.

"You'd better put it back then, and mind you put it on the right shelves," said Fred.

Ron dropped the stuff onto the floor and swore then made a rude hand gesture right at the moment Mrs. Weasley appeared.

"If I see you do that again I'll jinx your fingers together," she said to Ron seriously.

"Mum, can I have a Pygmy Puff," said Ging earnestly.
"A what?" Said Mrs. Weasley wearily.
"Look, they're so sweet," said Ginny looking at the Pygmy puffs.

I noticed that Harry, Ron, and Hermione wee getting under the invisibility cloak and walking out of the door of the store. I debated following them or not for a minute as I looked at Ginny and Mrs. Weasley looking at the Pygmy puffs and Mr. Weasley looking at muggle playing cards. Fred and George were helping customers. I followed behind the trio slowly so they wouldn't notice me. I noticed they were following Draco into Knockturn Alley.

I hesitated for a moment longer before following in their tracks. Their feet were showing at the very bottom occasionally. I hated Knockturn alley. It was the evil area where many dark thugs were sold. I followed them at a run into it after making sure that no one was following me or saw me.

They stopped outside of Burgin and Burkes. I went into the alley next to the store so they wouldn't see me. I tried to listen to what they were saying but I heard nothing.

After about five minutes of staring at them anxiously to see if they would attack Draco the bell tinkled above the door and Draco Malfoy left the shop looking very pleased with himself.

He looked down the alley way and I stood up against the wall of the building as far in the shadows as I could go. He seemed like he didn't notice me and left.

The problem was the trio didn't leave. I instead saw Hermione go into the store. I decided that is better get back to the store and as I was running back up towards Diagon Alley I heard "Elizabeth?" From Harry I ran back into the shop.

In the twins shop I walked back up to Mrs. Weasley and Ginny. They had brought Ginny a Pygmy puff. It was very soft.
