Chapter 13: The Necklace

At the party Harry was praised by many people for his good skills at captaining and for winning. Romilda Vane hinted heavily that she wanted him to ask her to Slughorns Chrsitmas party.

"Are you going to ask Romilda?" I asked laughing as we taught our way through the fully packed Gryffindor common room.

"No," said Harry laughing. "Let's find Ron, I need to talk to him," we pushed more towards the crowd.

"Okay," I said and then a Pygmy Puff came into view. "Ginny's here-" and we slaked towards the Pygmy puff riding on its owners shoulder.

"Oh, are you looking for Ron? He's over there, the filthy hypocrite," she said gesturing to the corner of the room.

I looked and saw Ron and Lavender Brown with their hands wrapped so closely together I thought they would suffocate.
"It's looks like he's eating her face, doesn't it? But I suppose he's got to refine his technique somehow. Good game, Harry," and she disappeared into the crowd of people.

I turned at the same time as Harry. As the portrait hole swung shut I thought I saw the hair of a girl I was looking for-

"Hermione," I whispered. Harry nodded and we ran to the portrait hole as quickly as possible.

"Where would she go?" I asked as we walked down the hall.

"I have a idea," said Harry and sure enough in the first unlocked classroom with saw Hermione Granger.

"Oh, hello," said Hermione in a brittle voice. "I was just- practicing," she said gesturing to a small flock of birds flying above her head.

"Yeah- they're... Uh- really good," said Harry flatly. I bit my lip as I watched the conversation .

"Ron seems to be enjoying the celebrations-" Hermione said in a high pitched voice. My heart sunk.

"Hermione-" I whispered sympathetically.

"Um... Does he?" Harry said with such a lying voice I was surprised his nose didn't grow two feet long.

"Don't pretend you didn't see him-" said Hermione. "He wasn't exactly hiding it, was-"

Suddenly I heard the door behind me open and heard the laughing of Ronald Weasley. I slowly faced the door to see him pulling Lavender by the hand into the classroom.

"Oh," said Ron as saw Hermione and Harry and I.

"Oops!" Said a giggling Lavender. The door swung shut behind her as she backed through it. Hermione stared at Eon and through the awkward silence I stared at my shoes mainly.

"Hi, Harry! Wondered where you'd gone off to!" Ron said in a fake cheery voice.

Hermione slid off the desk she was sitting on. Trouble and tension swam through the air.

"You shouldn't keep Lavender waiting outside," Hermione said quietly and with slight dignity. "She'll wonder where you've gone off to," I breathed in deeply.

Hermione began to very slowly walk towards the doorway. As I started after her Harry gently tugged at my wrist. When I looked at him he shook his head no and stared at the events unfurling before our very eyes.

"Oppungo!" Hermione shrieked. Her eyes were wild as the flock of birds she had just conjured flew from around her head and darted at Ron. They pecked and clawed at his skin.

"Hermione!" I shrieked.

"Get them off me!" Ron yelled in a muffled scream as he covered his face with his arms.

Hermione opened the door and ran out of it there was a small son before it slammed shut behind her. Harry and I glanced at each other. This was much worse than we thought!

-------------------------------------------------------
It was now a cold winters night near Christmas as I wandered through the dark Hogwarts corridors to find some peace of mind. I had repeatedly had the same dream the Voldemort had sent me a month ago practically every night now. Whenever I woke up from it I could never sleep so I had taken to walking the halls.

As I passed a window I heard snow beating against it and wind rattling the glass panes. The twelve Christmas trees that were always in the Great Hall for Christmas had been delivered earlier that morning by Hagrid. So, I was walking around the school when I heard a noise.

"Nox," I whispered and my wand tip extinguished. I walked up against the wall and saw a light coming towards me.

"Elizabeth?" Asked a voice.

"Harry?" I responded.

"What are you doing here?" Asked Harry automatically.

"I could ask you the same thing," I said. "Lumos," my wand tip ignited once more.

"I felt like going for a walk-" Harry lied.

"Harry, it's past one in the morning," I said as we walked up the stairs together.

"Never mind that- what are you doing up and walking around?" Harry asked me sternly.

"I couldn't sleep. Hey," I said trying to change the subject. "Want to look in the Great Hall to look at the trees!" I asked.

"What? I mean, I guess," said Harry. We looked but the hall was locked as expected. But Harry and I stayed walking around the halls at night anyway.

"Harry?" I asked as we started back to Gryffindor tower.

"Yeah?"

"Do you think Mum and Dad would be proud of us?" I asked. It was true that my dreams of Voldemort had been keeping me awake but so had this thought. I was made up of a dead girl who they knew and Tom Riddle... A man who few up to kill my parents.

"Of course," Harry answered.

"Harry?" I asked as we got closer to the portrait hole.

"Yes?" Harry responded again.

"I love you," and with that I hugged him.

"Love you to Liza," he whispered. And with that I went to bed once again. And I slept perfectly till morning.

Ron and Hermione were still fighting. I had withdrawn from most people and spent a lot of time alone. Unlike Harry, I barely managed to keep up with both of them or Ginny anymore. I just worked all day and night then I wandered and wondered. But one evening I was in the library working on a essay that was assigned to me by Snape as extra assignment.

"You need to be more careful," hermiones aid mindlessly to Harry.

"For the last time, I am not giving back this book. I've leaned more from the half blood prince than Snape or Slghorn ever taught-" Harry defended this dumb book yet again.

"I'm not talking about your stupid so-called prince," Hermione interrupted. "I'm talking about earlier. I went into the girls bathroom just before I came here and I saw and heard about a dozen girls in there, including Romilda Vane, trying to decide how to slip you a love potion," said Hermione.

"Oh, yeah," I said remembering earlier. "They're all hoping they're going to get you to take them to Slughorns party," I said.

"Apparently, they all brought Fred and Georges Love potion which I'm afraid to say, probably work-" said Hermione.

"Why didn't you confiscate them then?" Harry demanded. It's true, both Hermione and I were prefects.

"They didn't have the potions with them in the bathroom," I said.

"They were just discussing tactics. I'd just invite someone to go with you, that'll stop all the others from thinking they've still got a chance. It's tomorrow night, they're getting desperate," Hermione added. I sighed because I, like Harry, didn't want to go to the party at all and didn't have anyone to take to the party.

"There isn't anyone I want to invite-" Harry mumbled.

"Well, just be careful what you drink, because Romilda Vane looked like she meant business," Hermione said.

"Hang on a moment," Harry said after a minute or two. "Hasn't filch banned any products from Weasleys Wizarding Wheezes?" Asked Harry.

"Since when has anyone paid attention to anything Filch banned?" I said sarcastically.

"But I thought all the Owls were being searched? How come the girls are getting them in?" Harry asked.

"Fred and George send them disguised as perfumes and cough potions. It's part of their owl delivery service," Hermione said.

"You know a lot about it-" Harry said cooly. I laughed at what Harry was implying but stopped as Hermione shot me a angry glare.

"It was all on the back of the bottles they showed Ginny and me this summer.." Hermione said. That was when I wasn't paying attention. "I don't go around putting potions in people's drinks... Or pretending to at that, which is just as bad-"

"Yeah, we'll never mind that," Harry interrupted. "The point is Filch is being fooled, isn't he? These girls are getting things into the school disguised as something else! So couldn't Malfoy have bought that necklace into the school-"

"Oh.. Not that again!"said Hermione exasperated.

"Come on, why not?" Harry asked.

"Look, secrecy sensors detect jinxes, curses and concealment charms, don't they? They're used to find dark magic and dark objects. They'd of picked up a powerful curse, like the one on the necklace, within seconds. But something that's just been put in the wrong bottle- wouldn't register. And anyway- love potions aren't dark or dangerous-" Hermione stated.

"Well, I mean Draco could have-" I started.

"Not you to," Hermione sighed.

"Easy for you to say," Harry responded to Hermione's remark on love potions.

"So- it would be down to Filch to realize it wasn't cough potion, he's not a very good wizard, I doubt he can tell one potion from-" Hermione stopped as I heard moving behind the dark bookshelves.

"What was that?" I whispered. Madame Pince was revealed holding a lamp.

"The library is now closed- mind you replace any books you have borrowed to the correct- what have you done to that book boy!" She yelled at Harry.

Hermione tugged us out of the library as Harry and Madame Pince fought about the book.

"Baubles," Harry said to the fat lady and we entered the portrait hole.

"Same to you," she said with a grin. It was the new password for the holidays.

"Hi, Harry! Fancy a gillywater?" Asked a smiling Romilda Vane as soon as we entered. I pressed Harrys wrist in warning and then left.

Hermione looked back at Harry to then we met and walked away.

"No thanks," Harry answered briskly. "I don't like it much-"

"Good excuse-" I said sarcastically to Hermione as we watched from a few feet behind them.

"Well, take these anyway," she said handing Harry a box. "Chocolate cauldrons, they've got firewhiskey in them. My gran sent them to me, I don't like them much-"

"Totally firewhiskey," Hermione whispered to me sarcastically.

"Oh-right- thanks a lot," said Harry. He started walking towards Hermione and I. "I'm going to go over here," and he walked to us.

"I told you. Sooner you ask someone, sooner they'll all leave you alone," Hermione said. She stopped talking suddenly, probably because she had just spotted Ron and Lavender sitting in a armchair snogging.

"Well, goodnight-" she said and she briskly went up the girls dormitory staircase.

"Oh, dear," I said to Harry.

"Yeah. Hey, Eliza who are you bringing to the party?" Harry said turning to me

"Oh, I don't know..." I said and for the first time it dawned on me that I had no one to bring to the party. Neville and I hadn't spiked since he kissed me so he was out of the question. I wouldn't bring Draco or anyone else.

"I'm gonna go do some work-" Harry said and he headed off to his dormitory.

I eventually decided to go for a walk around campus one last time. It was growing rapidly dark outside but it wasn't 9 yet so I was allowed out technically even though Professor Dumbledore told me to never go outside alone or past dinner unless absolutely necessary.

I put on my hoodie and then went down the main entrance and slipped into the cold outside world. I walked around freezing cold with my hands in my pockets. I was freezing cold as I didn't have a hat, gloves, or a scarf.

Suddenly, when the sky was fully dark, snow began to fall around me. It had all melted before today. And now I looked up at the dark sky and saw snowflakes floating down around me. Within minutes of it beginning the ground was fully coated in a light dusting of snow. I ran back up to the entrance of school which was thankfully still open. I ran up to Gryffindor common room and sat down on the hearth of the fireplace. I peeled of my cold and wet hoodie and warmed up thanks to the fire.
-------------------------------------------------------
"You asked Luna?" I ran up to Harry three hours before Slughorns party.

"Yeah, how did you know?" Asked Harry.

"Peeves-" I said calmly.

"Are you taking someone?" Asked Harry after a large sigh.

"I don't think so," I said.

"Is there anyone you want to take?" Asked Harry.

"Not really," I said shrugging. We walked to dinner together and I sat with Hermione at the end of the table.

"Yes, I'm meeting Cormac at eight-" said Hermione positively beaming at Parvarti Patil halfway through a conversation. I almost spit out my drink.

"Cormac? Cormac Mclaggen you mean?" Parvarti asked.

"Are you going out with him then?" Parvati asked.

"Oh- yes didn't you know? Well- I've got to go get ready-" said Hermione and she bounced away happily. I followed after her quickly and caught up to her.

"Cormac?" I yelled after her. She stopped in her tracks quickly.

"I thought he would bother Ron the most-" she said. I rolled my eyes at her.

"Hermione you shouldn't-" I started.

"At least I'm bringing someone..." She said quickly. I stopped talking and began walking away quickly. "Eliza, wait! I'm sorry!" Hermione called after me.

"Fine," I said turning around to face Hermione. "But I'm only stopping because I know you didn't mean what you said-" I said plainly.

"I'm sorry. I know you just didn't want to bring anyone," Hermione said.

"Exactly. Now let's go get ready... Peacefully," I said calmly.

"Yes, let's go, I'll meet you in your room in ten minutes-" said Hermione as we approached the fat lady.

"Oh, are you two getting ready for that party?" She asked us.

"Yes," Hermione said.

"Password?" Asked the fat lady.

"Baubles-" I said.

"Enjoy!" She said. We entered the portrait hole and I went into my room Hermione into hers.

I entered my dark dormitory and walked over to my bed where I had my dress laid out. It was a red pressed dress that had thick tanktop sleeves. I got changed into it quickly and then started to put on my shoes. They were black heels. As I slid on the second one while leaning against the bed I heard a knock on the door.

"Hermione? You're already here- here come on in-" said a muffled Ginny. "Alohomora," she said as them both Ginny and Hermione came through the door.

"Hey," I said looking at both of them. Ginny went up to her bed and went into the closet with her dress. Hermione wore a pink low v-cut dress with thin pleats that was very pretty.

"Hello," Hermione responded.

"What time is it?" Asked Ginny as she opened up the closet door and revealed herself wearing a white dress with a pretty black pattern around the edges.

"About seven-" said Hermione.

"Shoot-" Ginny said rushing over to her trunk and she dug around in it till she pulled out a small bag and a pair of black heels. She slid on the heels.

"What's wrong?" I asked. Getting some makeup off of my bed and putting on some eyeshadow.

"I'm behind schedule-" she said quickly.

"Oh, you'll be fine Ginny. Dean will wait, Hermione when are you meeting Mclaggen?" I asked adding some lipstick on. Hermione was now doing her own makeup with my things next to me on my bed.

"About 8 in the common room-" Hermione said.

"You have time," I stated calmly.

"She does but I don't!" Ginny exclaimed as she ran around our dormitory quickly.

"What are you talking about Ginny calm down," I said.

"I have to meet Dean in a half hour," Ginny said.

"Well that's fine just do your hair-" I said calmly.

Hermione walked over to Ginny.

"Here let me help-" she performed a simple spell and Ginny's hair was instantly waved and clipped to the side.

"Thanks Hermione-" she said calmly with a smile.

"Now calm down will you?" I said with a laugh. Ginny and Hermione both laughed a sigh of relief to. Hermione had her hair done with curls and pinned in the back. She looked lovely.

"You look great Hermione!" I said.

"Thanks Elizabeth, you do to-" she said.

"I have to go-" Ginny said quickly bustling over to our dormitory door.

"Oh- you look great Ginny! Have fun if I don't see you," I said calling after her.

"Bye-" screamed Hermione. Ginny waved and closed the door behind her. My hair was done curly and pinned in the back in a twist.

"I wonder if we can see Harry before the party," I thought aloud.

"Do you want to see if we can see him in the common room?" Asked Hermione.

"Sure, wait- are we sure we're ready?" I asked.

"Yes-" said Hermione and we left my dormitory.

In the common room was Harry in a suit just coming off the staircase to the boys dormitories.

"Hello, Harry!" I said cheerily while walking over to meet him.

"Oh, Eliza- Hermione," said Harry as he spun around to see us both.

"You look nice, very handsome-" I said to Harry smiling.

"Oh thanks so do you two-" he said gesturing to Hermione and myself.

"Thank you-" I said.

"Thanks, Harry," said Hermione.

"Hey, Eliza, where did you get that necklace?" Asked Harry.

"Oh, it was near the lake," I said looking down at the necklace I was wearing. The necklace was small black ball in the center.

"Eliza, that's not safe-" Hermione said.

"Oh, calm down its fine. If it was cursed I would have noticed already okay? And also I found it buried in the ground around the lake- it must have been there for ages," I said.

"Fine, but be careful with that thing-" said Harry.

"Oh, Cormac with be here soon-" said Hermione.

"See you at the party-" I said as Harry and I left.
