Prologue

I felt my breath hitching as his grasp got tighter, his expression becoming angrier by the second.

"I don't understand, what do you want from me?" I was barely able to question him.

"You know damn well what I want from you, Snow." He pressed down on my neck harder and pinned me closer down to the wall.

My hands started shaking and I couldn't do anything to defend myself. Like hell I was going to let this happen.

I remembered thinking, you know what? I'm done with life. Maybe I should just let this dude do whatever he was planning. Couldn't be too bad, right?

A voice in my head came in. What the hell are you thinking? Defend yourself. You're worth more than this!

Am I really though? I "said back" to the voice.

You know what? I am worth more than this. I looked up at him and he pushed down more. "Quit thinking. Give me the information I want."

I suddenly did what I should've done in the first place. "No."

I grabbed his arm in the split second he was adjusting them, and twisted it around, sending him into a shock of horrible pain. Just for a little bit of a kicker too, I kicked him in the nuts.

"I don't know where you got my last name or even heard it, but never fucking call me that again."

I ran as fast I could. I think I just got myself out of getting raped. I have no idea.

How did that man know who I was? No one knows my last name except for family and certain friends.

After running until I felt like passing out, I barely made it home. I dashed to my room and laid on the floor and the thoughts came pouring in.

I was trying to think just where today did I fuck up so much to the point I got cornered into an alleyway?

~Earlier that day~

A scream was pounding in my head. One that sounded too familiar. It wasn't not a scream of pain, nor a scream of yelling, but rather...

a scream of death.

One that rang in my head over and over and over, it went on for the longest 10 minutes of my life. As I continued to shift in my seat during English class, the screaming eventually stopped.

And got replaced with another sound.

A whispering voice I knew too damn well.

It's all never going to be worth it. Go now... save yourself. Stay away from the pain. Live a life that makes you content, not depressed. Come.

Come on, you can do it.

Pleasure yourself with life, not death.

The bell rang and I dropped my assignment into a container that was meant for ungraded, but completed assignments. Phew. My last piece of work for the day.

If we weren't counting homework.

I went to my locker to see if I needed any more books.

Oh, I'm fine.

As I closed my locker door, my best friend Rachel's head that was hiding behind my locker door reveals itself.

"Hi Holly."

"Oh, hey Rachel. How's your day been?" God, these awkward conversations of small talk.

Made me sick.

"Crappy. What about you?"

"Worse. I had a voice in my head during English."

"Oh really? What'd it say?"

"Something about leaving for pleasure. Live your life, not death."

Rachel shuddered.

In the back pocket of my black jeans, my phone vibrated and I walked outside, Rachel not that far behind from me.

"Who is it? Jacob?" Rachel was always curious about that boy in my biology and math class. He was my assigned lab partner and somehow his existence found his way into Rachel's mind.

"No. I-it actually doesn't say. It says the six will die."

Another vibration went off. That time it was Rachel's phone. "What now?" I asked.

Rachel scrunched her eyebrows in confusion. "Wait a minute, show me the number of the person that just texted you."

I showed her and she compared the numbers and let out a small gasp. "It's the same person! My message says, "If you don't heed the warning, all the power inside you could be taken away faster than you received them.'"

She whispered the text because nobody could know about her powers. Only the people that were in her math class, which I happened to be in.

Ever since she received her powers, all the people in that class that received the message we all had to be guardians for some reason.

October 14, 2022

"All right class, turn your books to page 176 and do numbers 5-23." At that second, all our phones went off.

"Hey! What did I say about you guys not silencing your phones? This is your last warning. If I hear them going off one more time, they're mine during this class."

My watch and phone were connected, so any emails or texts I got on my phone, went on my watch. So I was able to discreetly read the message.

"Holly, one of the people in that room has powers. They are the last known person with them, and you and every single one of the people with you must protect them. They cannot die. And if they do, all hope for humanity has been lost, and the ruling of the King and his knights will take over all the world, and nobody can fight back."

Answer this text after your class or else... trust can fly away from you farther than it ever came from.

What the hell?

...

After class, I was the first one to leave the class and stopped all my classmates. "Read the message your all got earlier." They all did and sudden reactions came.

"Who?"

"What? Somebody has powers?"

"Who the hell got my number?"

"Why us?"

"Guys! We need to do this. Whoever sent us this has faith in us. We can't just reject this."

"Before I accept this, I really would like to know who it is that has powers." My classmate, Ethan says. They all murmured in agreement.

"It's me."

"What? Rachel?" Jacob asked.

More murmurs of shock arise and I shut them up. "Guys! Just because we know who it is doesn't mean we don't do it or not. Boy or girl, we're all protecting her."

I heard a few sighs and saw someone make a weird face. "Fine." Ethan said.

"Okay." They all say in agreement.

"Now go on with your days and answer the text."

Present day

"That's really weird. Anyways, I'm going to try to really get that off my mind. Can you send me the math assignment?"

"Why? We still have study hall-"

"Which is optional. Imma head home. See you tomorrow, Holly."

"I- okay. Bye Rachel." I thought about it for a quick second. I had no energy. I walked to school too, because my car was in the shop. "Actually wait, can I walk home with you? I don't wanna be lonely." I asked.

Rachel suddenly made a face of realization. "Shit! I just remembered I have work, one of my coworkers just texted me."

"Right. Go on ahead. Completely forgot you can work and I can't."

"Hey, 6 more days. Anyways, I gotta head out, sorry. Maybe next time?" Rachel asked.

"Yeah, yeah, that's fine. Now get your ass to work."

I started walking and as I'm 5 minutes away from home, a thud noise is created and suddenly I couldn't breath.

A hand clasps on my mouth and I started hyperventilating.

"You shouldn't have let her go."

...

Hyperventilating. That's where I went wrong.

Damn you, anxiety. Damn you.
