EXT. OUTSIDE CITY HALL – NIGHT

VANESSA, GINA, and LUCY walk towards city hall but see the crowd of Elgin children with their pickets. CONNER stands in front of the crowd with a megaphone and the rally cheers in excitement to his speech.

CONNER CONT'D: Change must happen! If change doesn't happen, then we might as well help the change happen!

VANESSA: Conner, what the hell are you doing?

CONNER: It's been a long time since we last got clues.

VANESSA: You last rioted yesterday!

CONNER: Well, I'm tired of waiting.

VANESSA: But something exciting happened!

CONNER: Did you find another clue?

VANESSA: Well, not really but–

CONNER: Then you found nothing. What you did caused nothing, and it was useless and now we're going to do something that won't be useless.

Vanessa opens her mouth before shutting it close quickly. She glares at Conner before turning her back towards him.

VANESSA CONT'D: Fine, have it your way.

CONNER (small wave): Bye!

NANCY can be seen in the distance and she sets a car on fire. People cheer in at the spectacle and Gina stares at the chaos in silence. Lucy tugs at Gina's sleeve and she looks back at her.

VANESSA CONT'D: Gina. Let's go. I don't think it's good to be here.

GINA: But–

VANESSA: Gina.

Gina looks at the crowd of people before turning away. Gina and Vanessa leave. Lucy stays behind and she stares at the result of Conner's actions. Conner looks upon the destruction with glee.

CONNER: If this doesn't get Roch's attention, I don't know what will!

Lucy grabs Conner's shoulder and spins him to face her.

LUCY CONT'D: Conner!

CONNER: Hey, Lucy!

LUCY: What in the hell are you doing?

Conner gives an innocent smile.

CONNER CONT'D: Nothing much, just leading a revolution.

Nancy screams in the background. Lucy's head turns sharply towards Nancy's direction and she is horrified. Nancy is holding a branch that's on fire high above her head with a gleeful expression.

NANCY CONT'D (screams): Free Ambrose!

CONNER: Hell yeah! Free Ambrose!

Conner begins to walk towards Nancy but Lucy stops him.

LUCY CONT'D: Conner, someone is going to get hurt! Don't you care for anyone here?

CONNER: Relax, no one is getting hurt.

LUCY: Where the hell is Belinda then? You know she's sleep-deprived and she's at higher risk.

CONNER: She's at home, don't worry.

LUCY: Don't lie to me.

Conner throws up his hands.

CONNER CONT'D: I'm not!

LUCY: Then what the hell is she doing over there?

BELINDA runs amongst the crowd as they destroy property. Conner's eyes go wide slightly before he changes it back to a calm expression.

CONNER CONT'D: See? She's fine, isn't she?

LUCY: And you know the reason why she's sleep-deprived and that's because she didn't want to miss anything that could be considered a major event or clue. This riot is just making her want to stay up more. She's trying her damn hardest to know everything fun about this place and it's driving her to the edge of a metaphorical cliff.

CONNER: It's not my fa–

LUCY: Don't say it's your fault.

CONNER: Why not? It wasn't my idea.

LUCY (screams): Yet look who organized this riot?

CONNER: If you're really that worried just take Belinda home with you!

Lucy shakes with anger and she takes a pause. She looks Conner in the eyes with contempt and Conner freezes.

LUCY CONT'D: Just who the hell are you?

Conner takes a shaky breath.

CONNER CONT'D: Look, I want out of here as much as you do, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

LUCY: What's the point of going back if it's going to hurt everyone you care about? You don't even know if this is the right way of doing things.

CONNER: We haven't had an idea of what to do for a long ass time now, this isn't any different.

LUCY: Fine, do whatever you want. But if you do, try and make sure you actually are looking out for your family.

Lucy walks towards Belinda and Belinda is not aware that Lucy is walking towards her. Belinda begins to stand from a crouch, and she is suddenly knocked down by a DAZED MAN.

LUCY CONT'D: Hey! Watch where you're going!

The dazed man doesn't pay attention to them and shuffles towards the fire. His eyes are bloodshot, and he sways slightly as he moves. Lucy holds Belinda in her arms and Belinda softly cries into her shoulder. The dazed man suddenly stops in front of the car fire and stands still in silence. After a few moments he screams at the top of his lungs and begins kicking the burning car.

LUCY CONT'D (hisses): Conner is this part of your plan?

CONNER (panicked): No. It... actually isn't.

The dazed man keeps screaming at the car while kicking it and the hem of his pant soon starts to catch fire.

DAZED MAN CONT'D: Give me back my job! How in the world am I supposed to survive in this goddamn city? I can't even go to another city because the goddamn trains stopped working! I can't get other jobs here either since every other shop has been shut down or nobody needs help!

A DAZED WOMAN enters the scene as well with a sledgehammer in her hands.

DAZED WOMAN CONT'D: That goddamn police officer doesn't want to help people. He's closing shops and leaving us jobless and starving. The police are corrupted! People are dying because of their stupid actions. What about real crimes that hurt people? They should focus on that instead of taking away our jobs. They're only making things worse

More native Elginites start the enter the scene and they all join the riot. People break the windows of the nearby shops and steal merchandise. The fires begin to spread to other areas and the kids fall silent at the adults' rampage.

CONNER CONT'D: This... this isn't a joke anymore. We actually did something! We did it!

LUCY: I don't think you found or did anything. I think you just made things worse.

CONNER: We did something, it's better than nothing.

LUCY: You do know mob mentality exists, right?

CONNER: We're closer to the next clue!

LUCY: How the hell does this take us to the next clue? By complaining how much we hate it here? Roch hasn't even been doing anything.

CONNER: Uh...

LUCY: Unbelievable.

The hoard of native Elgin adults now is destroying property and fighting each other. Lucy takes Belinda with her as they walk home and Conner stares at them with angry tears in his eyes.
