Part 27

INT. COOPER'S RESIDENCE–NIGHT

The police siren blares and drives past the Cooper's residence. LUCY and ERLE pause and look outside the window to see ROCH's car speed by.

LUCY CONT'D: I wonder where he's headed off to.

ERLE: It looks like the direction of... oh no.

LUCY: What?

ERLE: We need to send a message crow.

Erle walks outside.

CUT TO:

EXT. "CURIO SHOP" RUN DOWN STORE–NIGHT

Crows fly in the distance and screech noisily. VANESSA walks to the shop and sees a sleeping BELINDA. CONNER is still drawing up his map and greets her with a wave.

VANESSA CONT'D: I heard that she was still running around trying to find the first clues.

CONNER: Yeah, she's been really... enthusiastic to say the least.

VANESSA: I came to check up on you. She told me she was barely getting any sleep and I got concerned.

CONNER: I think everyone is. But no worries, I can carry her home.

VANNESSA: You sure? You might get tired. It's why I decided to drop by.

CONNER: No, really I'm g—

SHOP KEEPER exits the store in a rush. The door slams and it wakes up Belinda. The shop keeper has a suitcase in hand and is still putting on his coat.

VANESSA CONT'D: Whoa, what's going on, Ambrose?

BELINDA (groggy): Huh?

CONNER (whispers): I think something is happening.

BELINDA (excited): Really?

SHOP KEEPER: Those empty eyes, they watch. They come for me.

BELINDA: Who?

VANESSA: Is it the police? You heard you called them that earlier. Are you getting arrested?

SHOP KEEPER: It was inevitable. It is the flow of the universe itself.

CONNER: Wait, what does that mean?

The shop keeper searches his pockets and takes out a key. He briskly walks up to Vanessa and takes her hands to give her the key.

SHOP KEEPER: You who wander. Take this key. Seek knowledge where it can be found. See if you unlock the vaults. But you will need those who wander.

VANESSA (shocked): You're giving the key to me?

BELINDA: What? No fair!

CONNER: Wait, where are you going?

SHOP KEEPER: I must flee.

The shop keeper runs into a parked car and drives away. Belinda is grumpily staring at the key and Conner sighs. Vanessa inspects the key with excitement.

VANESSA CONT'D: We got our next clue.

CONNER: Belinda, you were able to witness the event you wanted. Can we go home to sleep now?

BELINDA: No!

CONNER: Why? You need sleep.

BELINDA: I wanted to be the one to get the key.

VANESSA: He mentioned wandering. I think I got picked because of my mark. I'm still technically a wandering soul.

CONNER: Ah, your mark.

VANESSA: Huh?

CONNER: It's red now.

Vanessa's mark is now a red ring instead of a blue one.

BELINDA CONT'D: That isn't fair!

CONNER: Ambrose gave the key to Vanessa. There's nothing you can change.

BELINDA: She can give the key to me.

VANESSA: You haven't been getting sleep. Why would I give it to you?

Belinda angrily marches off and pauses when she hears the police siren. ROCH exits his car and ignores the group as he walks up to the door.

CONNER: That isn't a good sign.

ROCH: Knock, knock my friend. Care to have a word for a moment?

Roch is greeted with silence and he opens the door. He takes a step inside before stepping back out after seeing nothing but darkness.

ROCH CONT'D: Nobody here?

VANESSA: Ambrose left.

ROCH: Ambrose doesn't leave his store.

CONNER: Well, he just did.

Roch inspects the outside of the shop for a few seconds before walking to his car again.

ROCH CONT'D: This is now an active investigation though. I'm classifying it a crime scene.

BELINDA: Is there going to be a car chase?

CONNER: Not sure.

Roch drives away.

BACK TO:

INT. COOPER'S RESIDENCE–NIGHT

Erle runs back into the residence and has a paper in his hand. Lucy stares at him in confusion and walks up to him.

LUCY CONT'D: What is it?

ERLE: It's the journal of doubt.

LUCY: What?

Erle shoves the paper into her hand and she takes it in confusion. Her mouth drops and her eyes widen.

LUCY CONT'D: No way...

The paper slowly gets eaten by flames and the words on the paper say in large letters "DO NOT TRUST AMBROSE".

CUT TO:

EXT. "SERENA NESTOR" TRAIN STATION – DAY

SHOP KEEPER is at a ticket booth pulling out wads of cash from his pocket. The TICKET MANAGER eyes him and reluctantly takes the money.

SHOP KEEPER: I need a ticket out of here. Quickly please.

TICKET MANAGER: To where?

SHOP KEEPER: Anywhere. (Pause) The faster for the train to arrive, the better.

The ticket manager hands shop keeper his ticket and he rushes to the train platform. He checks the time on his pocket watch. He continues to quicken his pace until he suddenly halts.

ROCH sits at a bench and slowly stands up. Their eyes meet and the shop keeper's fingers are tapping the watch nervously.

ROCH CONT'D: It seems I'm in luck that the trains are still late as always. Let's have a chat, Ambrose.

The train whistles loudly and the crows continue to squawk loudly into the night.
