Part 13
EXT. ELGIN RIVER–NIGHT
LUCY sits on the bridge with knees held to her chest. CONNER walks up to her with uncertainty and tentatively touches her shoulder as he crouches. Lucy's eyes are teary and focused on the river. Only the rushing water of the river can be heard and the water looks nearly black at night.
CONNER: I saw you weren't in bed. Our...parents will freak out.
LUCY: Sorry, I just needed some fresh air.
CONNER: I just got worried so I went out looking.
LUCY: I needed to think more. This whole thing is so crazy and I can't sleep because of it.
CONNER: We got these skin marks, we got some cool knick knacks, and there are a lot of goats.
LUCY: It's not just that... I just miss home.
CONNER: Same.
They sit in silence for a few moments.
CONNER: You know, I didn't think I would find you here. Especially with that last time...
FLASHBACK TO:
EXT. RIVER IN AMERICA–NIGHT (A WEEK AGO)
LUCY is sinking to the bottom of the river lifelessly. CONNER and BELINDA's bodies can be seen in the background just as lifeless. Faint shouts can be heard in the background. Lucy's eyes are dull and empty.
BACK TO PRESENT:
Lucy hugs her legs tighter.
LUCY: It's alright. I'm trying to...process it still. I promise that it won't happen again.
CONNER: It wasn't your fault.
LUCY: It was. I shouldn't have been stupid and I–
CONNER: No. We're not going over this again.
LUCY: Sorry.
CONNER (sighs): You should try something to get your mind off it.
LUCY: Like how you have been with the maps?
CONNER (awkward): I guess that's what I've been doing lately, huh?
LUCY: It's a little obvious. You were always an open book.
CONNER: Belinda really gets annoyed when I hide my feelings, doesn't she? (Chuckles)
LUCY: I think she ended up being obsessed with Elgin anyways, especially with the cryptic stuff.
CONNER: I can't blame her.
LUCY: I can't really either.
CONNER: At least we don't have school. Life has been more exciting and we met lots of cool new people.
LUCY: I don't like it here at all. The adults are creepy. They keep acting like they know something that I don't and I feel like I'm being watched constantly.
CONNER: Well, hopefully we can eventually go home.
LUCY: I don't think we will.
CONNER: What? What's making you say that?
LUCY: I...heard rumours. It's probably me overreacting. I just thought we were gone and then suddenly poof, we're here.
CONNER (pause): What kind of rumours did you hear?
LUCY: I heard some people saying we're all dead.
CONNER: This doesn't seem like a bad afterlife.
LUCY: It doesn't feel like heaven.
CONNER: Maybe it's reincarnation then. New life, new home.
LUCY: This is why I think we can't go back. We're all dead and stuck here.
CONNER: We should enjoy it here to the fullest then. I know Belinda is.
LUCY: Oh, Belinda. She probably doesn't even want to go back...
CONNER (clears throat): I mean it sucks that we're away from our families but at least we got each other. We always said that we were like siblings and look! We're actually family now!
LUCY: I guess...
CONNER: Plus, finding out a mystery with everyone has been fun.
LUCY: I still don't like the shop keeper.
CONNER: Forget about the shop keeper. We can do magic!
LUCY: Min said alchemy isn't magic. It's science.
CONNER: Potato, tomato. Who knows what else can happen?
LUCY: That's not how the saying goes.
CONNER (smiles): I know.
LUCY (sighs): Alright, I'll try to be more...enthusiastic. But I can't help but feel that something will happen.
