Chapter One
A New Start

Elena Gilbert sighed heavily. She had finally snapped with the Salvatore brothers, especially since they turned her innocent freshman cousin, Mackenzie into a not-so-innocent vampire. She was furious when she became one, but beyond pissed when Damon Salvatore thought it would be a good idea to turn her poor cousin into one! Mackenzie deserved to get married; have kids; grow old and die peacefully, knowing she had a fabulous life. Now, however, it was not the case. She wouldn't die of old age, and she certainly would not become a hunched over old woman, with wrinkles and scraggly grey hair.

"Elena?" a soft feminine voice tore the train of angry thoughts running through the vampire's mind. The Gilbert instantly recognised the voice as her cousin; Mackenzie.

"Hey, Kenzie," Elena greeted, not really acknowledging the girl. Kenzie furrowed her brows.

"Elena, what's wrong?" she asked, trying to catch her older cousin's eye.

Elena avoided looking at Mackenzie, staring awkwardly down at the floor instead. "I'm fine Kenzie." Kenzie went to speak, but Elena had already shoved past her.
"You should get ready for school.." Elena mumbled to her cousin as she walked out. Mackenzie sighed, it was always like this nowadays. She thought maybe Elena - although she didn't like to admit it - slightly missed the Salvatore brothers. It was Jenna's decision to move them away, especially after her daughter died and was reborn as a vampire!

Elena and Mackenzie traipsed into their new school; Beacon Hills High. Kenzie was ranting on about wanting to join the lacrosse team - even though she absolutely sucked at lacrosse - and Elena was silently taking in her surroundings. The place was quite similar to her old school. It was the female voice that awoke Elena from her day dreaming antics.

"Hey there! I'm Carter, you must be new, welcome to Beacon High! As a part of the welcoming committee, I have been informed to - uh - welcome you?" the brunette questioned herself. She appeared very lively and outgoing, like Elena used to be before her non-biological parents died.

"Hi Carter. I didn't know this school had a....welcoming committee?" Elena laughed nervously. Carter must have found this hilarious, because she began to laugh heartily.

"Sweetheart, there is no welcoming committee." Carter chuckled. Elena but her lip, shifting awkwardly. She was so stupid! "Hey, lighten up princess, it was only a joke!" Carter reassured, grabbing Elena's tanned arm and dragging her into the classroom the two were both assigned to.

The two acquaintances stumbled into class, Carter pulling Elena over to a large group of people talking.

"Hey squad! Meet this new gal I just picked up!" The group of people turned around. Elena could see them all staring at her, but she was focussed on the strange smell that was emitting from some of the people. A dark haired girl especially.

"Hi..." Elena whispered nervously. She wasn't normally this shy, but she felt intimidated by everyone. A pale, skinny, boy, who's hair was almost black, smiled at the girl. Elena felt happier, and returned the compliment, trying to make at least one friend on her first day.

Carter snapped her fingers in a 'z' formation. "Hey, girl who's name I don't know, don't touch my man!"

"Carter, I was trying to make friends. I'm not saying she's prettier than you, although -" the boy began, only to be interrupted by who Elena presumed was his girlfriend.

"Woah there! I know everyone loves me, but just to clarify, that girl has lips like a meerkat - the thinnest lips I've ever seen!"

"Hey! My lips aren't thin!" Elena joined in the argument, that seemed to be filled with sass, sarcasm, and compliments.

"Okay, we'll talk about this in bed, Stilinski! Anyway, new girl, meet my sassy Halloween squad. This is Lydia, Malia, Scott, Stiles, Rey, Sam, Kira, and Sky," Carter pointed to various different teens. They looked at her expectantly.

"Oh! I'm Elena Gilbert. I've moved here from Mystic Falls."

"Wait, did you just say, Mystic Falls?" Lydia inquired, her eyes filled with fear.

"Yeah, why?"

"Didn't you hear them say Elena? I can hear them screaming your name!"
