VII
Rested on a spare hospital bed beside Hoseok's, Aurora was tucked tightly into the blankets, sleep pooling on her eyelids. The night was filled with the soft sounds of her sleeping, slow and steady breaths accompanied by the beeping of Hoseok's monitors. The wind swooped up, over the heights as it rushed and rustled through the trees outside, gradually ebbing away into silence.
Hoseok sat upright in his bed, eyes cast out the open window as the cool midnight breeze entangled itself through his fiery orange hair. No matter how many times he tried to lay down and close his eyes, he couldn't fall asleep. He figured it was the fear slowly taking over his mind, creeping over him like a suffocating shadow he couldn't run from. He was scared. Not only scared about the creatures hunting him down, but scared that he might not be good enough to save the universe. After all, it was a lot to ask from a simple college student.
Eyes flickering away from the window, Hoseok cast his gaze to the male seated beside him. Head rested over the side of Hoseok's bed, Yoongi's breaths came softly through his parted lips. Under the soft glow of the moonlight, his porcelain skin was all the more ethereal, moon shaped birthmark just visible under his tousled hair. Hoseok found it almost adorable seeing the male sleep so soundly.
Sitting himself up a little more, Hoseok pulled the blanket to his chest, shivering a little in the cold.
Ironic right?
He was the barer of energy, yet he always found himself getting cold.
With eyes that simply wouldn't close and a heart that wouldn't stop its heavy beating, Hoseok found the dark space of the hospital room almost tormenting. He wished to drift off into a dream. He wished to sleep.
Deciding that just sitting there and staring up at the hospital roof was pointless, Hoseok remembered there was one thing he could entertain himself with. Hair falling softly over his eyes, Hoseok bent over to the end of his bed, snatching up a familiar object before returning to his comfortable position. Curling his fingers around the book in his hands, Hoseok opened the leather cover once again, flipping his way through the old coffee stained pages before his eyes landed upon a new entry of the book of elements.
"That's odd." Hoseok mumbled, raising a brow as he focused on the paper, "This page wasn't here before..." His eyes scanned over the title of the page, the fresh ink imprinting itself in his mind, "Andromeda?" he tilted his head to the side, "Isn't that the Milky Way Galaxy's neighbour?" he spoke.
Hoseok swore he almost jumped out of his skin when he felt the mattress of the bed begin to move. Snapping his eyes to the movement, Hoseok let out a drastic sigh of relief when he realised it was only Yoongi stirring in his sleep, placing a hand over his beating heart.
Letting out a soft yawn, Yoongi lifted his head from the side of the bed, stretching his arms high above himself before leaning back into his plastic chair, "Did I miss something?" he muttered, eyes lidded with sleep as he turned to the orange haired male.
Hoseok simply let out a chuckle, watching as Yoongi rubbed at his eyes, "Actually..." he softly smiled as he tilted the pages of the book towards the raven haired male, "You did."
Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, Yoongi's gaze fell to the pages of the book. Lips parting in surprise, Yoongi leant forwards in his seat, "Woah..." he breathed, "That page wasn't there before." he stated, eyes flickering over the title.
"I know," Hoseok frowned, running a hand through his hair, "Weird right?"
There was a moment of silence before Yoongi twisted his lips, "Should we go ahead and read it?" he asked, eyes momentarily flickering over to Aurora's sleeping form. Lengthy black hair falling softly over her face, Aurora was buried in a mound of comfy white hospital blankets, chest rising and falling at a steady pace as she got her long needed rest.
It seemed Hoseok had also noticed how comfortable Aurora looked, simply nodding his head as his eyes fell back to the pages of the book of elements, "Yeah..." he agreed, "Lets read it." he agreed, angling the book of elements in a way so that Yoongi could also scan it's contents.
Andromeda.
The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest galaxy to the Milky Way. At 2.5 million light-years, it's the most distant thing a person can see in the night sky from planet earth.
Yoongi scoffed, "Pshh, I've known about that for ages." he spoke up, earning Hoseok's full attention as they stopped reading, "The Andromeda Galaxy is another spiral galaxy, except it's a lot larger then ours." he explained, smugly surprising himself with how much he already knew about space.
Hoseok chuckled, "Whatever you say, genius." he spoke, rolling his eyes before his gaze rested itself back over the ink on the pages of the book.
The number of stars contained in the Andromeda Galaxy is estimated to be roughly twice the number estimated stars in the Milky Way, and unlike the Milky Way Andromeda is home to more life then imaginable.
"Woah, whoa, whoa..." Hoseok blurted out, brows furrowing together as his eyes glued themselves to the words on the page. It was unheard of. For all of humanity's existence, they'd only known the earth to be the only planet that could currently supported life in the Universe. Yes, it was obvious that amongst the stardust and supernova's there was bound to be life somewhere out there, but definitely not this close. Not as close as the Galaxy just over from their own. Hoseok frowned, "Aren't we the only discovered forms of life in the universe?" he choked, beeping of his heart monitor slowly increasing as he re-read the paragraph.
Yoongi gulped, sweeping his hair from his feline eyes, "I thought so too..." he breathed, casting his gaze back to the page with a little more seriousness then when they'd first started.
Unlike the Milky Way Galaxy which only contains one populated planet, The Galaxy of Andromeda is secretly home to thousands of different species, all with more advanced technology and capabilities than its new neighbour.
The population of the Galaxy of Andromeda has gone far beyond human capabilities. They've uncovered the secrets of longevity and ageing, invented light-speed travel and so forth.
"This is really hard to believe." Yoongi spoke up, locking eyes with Hoseok as they exchanged surprised glances. "There's a whole other civilisation out there! Not to mention, they've obviously existed longer then our kind if they've already advanced so much." he gulped, taking a moment to soak in the newly found information. Andromeda, their galactic neighbour, contained life.
Hoseok tightened his hold on the book, "Humans would do anything to belong to such an advanced society." he breathed, raising a hand to his head as he tugged on his hair in frustration, "We thought we were the most advanced species, that the universe belonged to us... but we were wrong."
Yoongi nod as he let out a sigh, "We're not the only civilisation... nor are we the most intelligent either." Yoongi's eyes flickered down to the pages of the book once again,
"Just who is this K.N guy?"
