🌻Chapter Two; Part One : The Exam🌻

(Gonna be a part two because these chapters have so much going on in them)

After a restless nights sleep in this crazy new world she found herself in, she and Shreya were heading into the dining hall for some breakfast. It was already full of life with students of all ages sitting in groups around the multiple tables. There was a buffet table out in the center of the room stacked ceiling high with a bunch of strange and colorful foods she'd never seen before. They hoped in the back of the line and each grabbed a plate.

"So, how are you feeling after..." Shreya asks as they wait in line.

"Discovering that this whole time I've actually been some kinda witch?" Rachael asks.

"Attunded, actually." Shreya corrects.

"Okay...Attuned." Rachael sighs. "I'm basically feeling all the emotions at once. Weird and excited and confused and scared. I mean...What was that shadow thing that attacked me last night?"

A few students turned to look at her, but were quickly shut down by Shreya's glare. "Maybe don't tell the whole school about it! We don't know for sure what that thing was...or what any of this means."

"Fine. We'll talk privately later." Rachael sighs. "I guess we can table it for now. I'm just...I'm just freaking out a little."

"And I totally get that. But for now, let's just keep this between us while we figure it out. Besides, I don't actually know what that thing was. I tried doing some research and came up utterly short." Shreya says concerned as the line moves forward.

"Ugh, I'm exhausted. I basically passed out after the 'incident' last night." Rachael sighs. "Which doesn't explain why I feel like I got hit by a truck."

"You're so Tuneless, it's adorable." Shreya giggles at her. "Magick uses up a ton of energy. Especially when you cast whatever crazy powerful spell that was last night. To be perfectly honest, I've never in my life seen a casting that looked like that!"

"What are you saying?" Rachael asks.

"I'm saying that whatever spell you cast last night was packing some insane energies, 'Ms. Woe Is Me, I Have No Magick'." Shreya smiles at her. "As for getting your energy back. This is probably the only time you'll hear me say this...But you should carboload."

"Good to know. Thanks." Rachael laughs at her distain for carbs.

They finally reached the front of the line and Shreya brought her attention to the tables of foreign food. "Behold! The miracle of a magick breakfast. Covers the entire food pyramid, and everything in between."

"What is all of this?" Rachael asks grimacing a bit at the sight of some substances.

"These are Prophecy O's. They're like fortune cookies, but still lots of fun. Yorba eggs. My favorite. They scream when you eat them, but you get over it once you taste the rich, gooey deliciousness. These are dragon links, sausages cooked over dragon flame. Be careful they'll be very spicy." Shreya explains pointing at each item.

"Wow...and I thought my elementary school had the most disgusting dietary options..." Rachael grimaces picking up the bowl of cereal, seeing as it was the safest option. The letters of the cereal started to move around in the milk to spell out 'Blood is thicker than water'. "That's...gross? And not really a prophecy or a fortune. Kinda just a phrase."

"At least it's a short phrase. I once had to wait for my O's to spell out a whole paragraph. Trust me, soggy Prophecy O's are the worst." Shreya says, as they found a place to sit down.

Rachael stirred her cereal around a bit, before taking a bite. It was a strange sugary coated cereal with a slight taste of mint for the milk-like liquid. "Woah, this is good..."

As they started to finish up their breakfast, Zeph sat down at the seat in front of her. "Rachael! So we meet meet again. You look like you're settling in well."

"I'm trying my best." Rachael smiles.

"You must be one of the infamous Mistry sisters. I was expecting someone wearing expensive clothes, covered head-to-toe in diamonds." Zeph says smiling at Shreya. "I'm Zeph, short for Zephyr."

"Nice to meet you, and sorry to disappoint. I left my diamond-encrusted onesie at home." Shreya grins.

"Okay, there's no one else around. So, about the attack..." Rachael whispers wanting to talk about it since it was taking over thoughts.

"Rachael, do you really think we should talk about this here?" Shreya asks, worried, tilting her head towards Zeph.

He rolled his eyes. "I can go if you want...Listen, I know we don't know each other that well, but I'm great at keeping secrets."

"He might have some insight that could help us, Shreya...The more heads the better, right?" Rachael says willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

"Still...I'd feel more comfortable if we discussed it away from prying ears." Shreya sighs looking around uncomfortably.

"Why Don't we go back up to my room then? The exam's not supposed to start for like an hour anyway." Rachael suggests.

Shreya nods and everyone stood up throwing away the remnants of their breakfast, before heading back to their dorm.

Once they were inside her room she shut the door behind her and everyone took a seat on her bed.

"Okay, enough idle chatter. What's going on that's so oh-so-secret?" Zeph asks laying across her bed and propping his head up with his elbows.

"Not much, I'm afraid." Shreya sighs, biting her lip. "I spent half the night researching this creature that attacked you, but I couldn't find anything."

"Hold on, you were attacked? Are you okay? That must've been terrifying!" Zeph asks, sitting up with concern.

"It definitely wasn't fun. I've never been more scared in my life. It was so weird, like an angry ball of smoke." Rachael sighs.

"Hmm. It kinda sounds like a Follower. They're basically harmless little wisps of smoke sent to terrorize people as a prank." Zeph explains.

"Actually, I..." Shreya says bitting her lip. "Nevermind, you're probably right."

"I don't know. It didn't seem harmless..." Rachael mumbles.

"I don't suppose you've made any enemies in the last, oh, twenty-four hours or so, Rachael?" Zeph asks jokingly.

"I mean I met someone who dislikes me for no reason, but not enough for anyone to send me something like that." Rachael says, think back to the kid who insulted her on the lawn yesterday.

"Well then I don't know what to tell you. It was probably just a prank." Zeph says. "So case closed for now, and on to a more important topic: our first day!"

"Yeah, uh, do I need an owl or a wand or something? I feel under equipped." Rachael asks.

"I'm embarrassed to even be near you right now." Shreya grimaces at her stupidity.

"You don't need anything. Today you're going to take your Attunement placement test and you'll get to go to your first class!" Zeph explains excitedly.

"I personally can't wait to learn some transmutation spells! Rachael, why don't you get dressed so we can head down?" Shreya says.

"I am dressed!" Rachael huffs at her, she hated that Shreya acted like she wasn't wearing a totally fashionable hoe dress.

"Nope. No, absolutely not. I've held my tongue for as long as I could, but you can't make a fool out of yourself any longer. You're outfit is...fine, I suppose for the Attuneless world. But you're at Penderghast now." Shreya huffs. "You must allow me to style you. It's your first day. Your societal debut, if you want to get technical. I have this outfit back in my room that's-"

"No! I'll be just fine in the outfit I'm wearing thank you very much." Rachael glares, crossing her arms.

"Oh, sure...you thought I was asking...that's fine..." Shreya says taking a deep breath.

Suddenly a voice chimed through her head as clear as day. "Freshmen! Attention, please! We're ready to start the Attunement placement tests. Come down to the foyer to be assigned your examiner."

"Did you guys hear that?" Rachael asks look at the others.

"Just a little school-wide announcement. No reason to fret." Shreya shrugs.

"Yes! I'm so pumped for this. Come on, let's get going!" Zeph says jumping up off the bed, and heading out into their living room.

Shreya put a hand on Rachael's shoulder. "Look, I know you're worried about whatever that thing was that attacked you, so I'll tell you. I don't think it was a Follower. I did a ton of research last night. Like seriously, more than I do for class, and that was one of my potential options. But in the end I had to rule it out. It just didn't fit what we saw last night."

"Yeah, I didn't really think it was either." Rachael sighs, biting her lip.

"Whatever attacked you is something... obscure. Something that's not easy to find." Shreya says somberly.

"Hey, are you guys coming or what?" Zeph asks poking his head back into the doorway.

"Yeah." Rachael nods and they all walk out of her room and out into the hallway.

"Don't worry, we'll figure this out. Whatever it is." Shreya whispers as they walk.

(I didn't proof read this, and I'm sorry)
