🌻Chapter Ten: Smoke and Mirrors🌻

She stood in a land devoid of colors and life, everything was either a shade of black or blood red. The mirror she had been pulled through was no where to be scene, but other mirrors were scattered about hidden in the shadows.

There was one mirror straight ahead of her, the closest one to her, the only problem being that a giant smoke monster stood in her way. "Well shit..." Rachael whimpers, observing its form as it towered over her.

The large creature growled opening it's mouth to release funnels of smoke as it races towards her. She was barely able to jump out of the way of a direct hit. The monster lunged at her again, it's claws just barely grazing her before a flash of light blinded her from behind.

"That's enough!" Professor Swan yelled as the monster looked to assess the new threat. She kept her hand raised and glowing with a bright light making the smoke creature shield it's eyes.

Rachael quickly got back on her feet, backing up a safe distance. "Professor? How did you-"

"The mirror dimension was calling to me. I knew you must have been in danger!" Swan calls out to her. "You need to get out of here now!"

"Right, on it..." Rachael nods, looking around for an escape, right as the monster leapt towards her again. She quickly hid behind a tree the monster slamming into the ground where she had previously been, whipping around to find her.

The monster began sniffing around for her as Swan threw another beam of light at it. "Get away from her!" The monster backed away in pain as she waved her hand towards a nearby mirror. "Through that mirror there!"

Rachael turned to make a run for it, glancing back to find the monster pulling Swan in with some sort of magickal wormhole. It sucked her right up into it, her body completely disappeared into it. There one minute gone the next. "No!"

The monster turned its attention back to her as she took off into a full sprint towards the mirror. As it gained on her she leaped through the mirror and crashed directly into the blue checkered chair in Professor Swan's office.

Rachael scrambled to her feet knocking things over left and right as she tried to make it to the door. The monsters massive arm suddenly bursts through the mirror destroying everything in its path. It managed to grip onto her leg dragging her back towards the mirror. It's claws sunk deep into her leg breaking the skin. She was whisked back into the mirror dimension and crashed directly into a puddle.

She got to her feet and the ground started to shake as the monster approached. It became increasingly obvious fighting was going to be the only way to get out of this one. Tim materialized beside her having heard her thoughts, eyes narrowed into slits as he squatted into his fighting stance.

The monster barreled towards them and they barely made it out of the way in time. It collided with multiple mirrors the glass shattering all around. It's smoke turned into a dark blood red as it trailed out of its nose and mouth.

She intertwined her magick with Tim's to break apart a metal mirror sending shards of metal at the smoke monster. It growled narrowing its eyes at her as smoke began to pour from its nostrils, seemingly unaffected.

"Ah! I think we just made it angrier!" Rachael mumbles.

The monster opened up another swirling vortex pulling her in feet first. She struggled trying to grip on to something, anything, but to no avail was still getting pulled closer. Nearby a piece of mirror gets sucked into the vortex and it shrinks a bit.

"The more that goes in the smaller it gets!" Rachael says out loud to herself, quickly turning herself into a magnet and pulling in everything she could to throw into the vortex. She sends a group of mirrors through the darkness and into the vortex. It closed quickly with a soft pop.

The monster grumbles and leaps towards her, Tim quickly jumped in front of her protectively. "No! You're not strong enough!"

With one swipe of the monster's hand Tim was on the ground. He whimpered and stood up again to take a stance in front of her once again. Without a second glance the monster slashed a cut across Tim's body. He slumped beside her whimpering once more before returning to the ether.

Rachael's anger built up in her chest and she through her hand out at the monster sending a ball of fire right at it. "Burn bitch!"

It seemed to catch something in the air and started to burn its smoke, as the monster went up in flames it crashed to the ground the red that had been flowing through it disappearing. The only thing left was an empty husk.

"It it really over?" Rachael whispers waiting a moment before collapsing the the ground tiredly, observing her injuries. She began limping back over to the mirror to Professor Swan's office when she noticed black vapors coming out of the husk. That began to form a new creature of the same stature. "Fuck me..."

Before she could even assess the situation the monster had her pinned down to the ground. The back of her head smacked against the ground with a loud crack and a warm metallic smelling wetness began to spread through her hair and into the ground. It wrapped it giant hands around her neck starting to choke the life out of her.

"H-Help..." The world started to go dark and her body began to become cold and distant a harsh contrast to the warmth spreading from her skull. As soon as her eyes began to feel to heavy to keep open there was a voice calling out from the darkness. Forcing herself to keep her eyes open, she saw her reflection or twin standing off to the side sending a beam of white light at the monster. It fell aside almost instantly and Rachael rushed to her feet taking a moment to catch her breath.

"We need to work together!" Her twin yelled over to her. "I need you to channel your magick into the ground and make a downward slice with your arm. Then, shout consume!"

They both work in tandem channeling their intertwined magick into the ground and pulling it back up opening up a crack in the earth that consumes the monster whole before closing back up.

"Is it really gone?" Rachael asks, moving towards her as she collapses on the ground. Another vortex appeared by the mirror and spit out Professor Swan. "You're alive!"

"Yes. It seems like that void didn't like me very much... but you're okay! I was beginning to fear the worst. I'm sorry I couldn't protect you, Rachael... That creature, it was much stronger than I anticipated. It caught me by surprise." Swan says fixing herself as she surveys the area eyes falling on her twin. "Oh my goodness! Atlas!"

"You know her?!" Rachael asks confused.

"Of course I do!" Swan says over aggressively.

"But she's been following me since I got to Penderghast!" Rachael says, this whole thing muddled in her mind.

"When you mentioned a reflection, I thought she was checking in... But I didn't realize she was trapped in here. Oh dear." Swan kneeled down checking the twin's pulse, sighing with relief. "Seems like she's unconscious, but still with us. Let's get outta here."

Swan levitated the twin off the ground and lead Rachael back through the mirror that leads into her office. She laid Atlas down in her armchair before sealing the mirror back up again.

"Oh my goodness! You're covered in blood!" Swan gasps, using her magick to bring over a wet towel that began to wipe off the dried blood from her hair and neck. "Well good thing is you're hair is already red so you don't have to worry about staining... But I'm worried you could have a concussion. I can give you a potion that should help, but will have some side effects. You need to be more careful."

"I tried my best, but that thing was hella stronger than me." Rachael sighs.

"We'll have to increase your training see what we can do." Swan says.

"Can we talk about the elephant in the room?" Rachael asks. "How do you know her?"

Swan walked over and closed the door, wiping her palms on her skirt nervously. "Oh, that... I admit, I knew more about your original situation than I let on. But I could tell you weren't ready so... I lied. But I promise, I only did it to try to keep you safe!"

"Ugh! I can't believe you preached to me about trust and telling the truth when you were lying to me the whole time!" Rachael huffs.

"There are so many things going on you don't understand. I didn't want you to get dragged into it all." Swan sighs, not able to look her in the eyes. "I knew that when you showed up here something was wrong, but I wanted you to be happy. I guess I didn't do a great job."

"How am I ever supposed to trust you again!?" Rachael says, throwing her hands up in the air.

"You don't have to trust her. But you should trust me." The twin says now sitting in Swan's chair wide awake.

"You? You're joking right!? Every time you show up, something is usually trying to kill me! Why and what reasons would I have to trust you?!" Rachael shouts, her anger starting to get the best of her.

"And that's exactly what I've been trying to warn you about! I'm the one whose been protecting you since the beginning!" The twin yells back.

"When if that's true you haven't been doing a very good job have you!" Rachael challenges.

"You really don't get it, do you?" The twin asks rolling her eyes as she pulls out the other half of the ripped picture Rachael and Beckett had found in the lost and found. "I'm your twin."
