🌻Chapter Seven; Part Three: Office Hours🌻

As night hit, Rachael arrived at the library finding her friends already crowed around one of the tables.

"After all the time Beckett and I spent in here shelving books, finding what we need should be a breeze." Rachael smiles, walking over to them.

"Don't underestimate the library, Rachael. It has all sorts of secrets." Beckett says, almost like a warning.

"Right, sorry to insult your boyfriend." Rachael jokes, making him roll his eyes. "So, where should we start?"

"The most effective method would be divide and conquer. We should each gather a stack of books that look relevant and skim through them. Griffin and I will handle investigating this rock the monster left behind. I know a few geology texts that might have the answer." Beckett explains.

"Then Zeph And I will look into the reflection you keep seeing." Shreya adds.

"And I'll try to find information on the monsters." Rachael nods.

Everyone split up throughout the library and returned to the table with stacks and stack of relevant books. After an hour or two Zeph was the first person the break their intense silence.

"Hey Shreya, look at what I drew next to this unicorn." Zeph laughs, tapping her to get her attention.

"Pffft. Is the horn stabbing someone in the ass?" Shreya laughs at him, looking at his book.

"Will you two actually focus and quit drawing in library books? We have work to do." Griffin grumbles at them.

"What do you mean drawing in library books? You can't be serious... you wouldn't actually..." Beckett gasps, looking sick to his stomach at the thought.

Griffin took the book from Zeph and started to erase his immature drawing. Rachael sighed picking up an Encyclopedia of magickal creatures. She flipped through the pages, stopping on one filled with pictures.

"What do you think about this one?" Rachael asks, holding the book up to show them the pictures. "It looks like it's made out of the same substance as the monsters I've fought."

"Possibly...Let me see that." Beckett says quirking an eyebrow at the page and taking the book from her. "It says here that this monster appears sporadically, and has only ever been seen on the West Coast."

"Well then, guess we'd better keep looking..." Rachael sighs, as he hands the book back to her. She glanced over at Zeph's book, the bright colors drawing her eyes to it and feeding her soul. "Zeph, That doesn't look like research."

"Oh! Sorry, I got distracted..." Zeph says quickly, setting the book aside closing it on the page of a rainbow he had open.

Rachael grabbed another book, when Shreya called her into one of the aisles. "Hey, Rachael! Come take a look at this."

"Did you find something on the creature?" Rachael asks, as she approaches her.

"Even better! I thought I'd see if the spellwork section had anything in it and I found this Moon Spell! It could help our investigation!" Shreya smiles.

"A moon spell? But Shreya that's pretty high level magick I don't think I could do that." Rachael says, rubbing her arm awkwardly.

"Nonsense! Aren't you a Sun-Att? You should have more than enough potential to pull it off! Besides, it's way too useful to pass up!" Shreya huffs.

"I think we should stay on topic. Learning this spell might not even help, but discovering the type of creature it is will." Rachael sighs, as they start to hear a loud argument break out back at their table. They headed back over to it, to find Beckett and Griffin bickering angrily.

"It's the best way for us to-" Beckett argues with the taller boy, his eyebrows knit together tightly.

It's not an option!" Griffin shouts, clenching his fists on the table.

"Whoa...What's-What's going on here?" Rachael asks, looking between the two boys.

"He's suggesting a ridiculous-" Griffin grumbles.

"What I'm suggesting would make finding what we're looking for a lot easier." Beckett interrupts angrily.

"What do you mean?" Rachael asks, sitting on the table besides Beckett.

"I know a spell that summons what a person needs, if they concentrate hard enough. Including a book with the information you're looking for." Beckett explains, his form relaxing as he looked up at her.

"It's too risky! If something goes wrong, it could-" Griffin glares still fired up.

"I am fully capable. The spell just involves placing my hand on the forehead of the person I'm casting it on. It is not a big deal." Beckett says, much calmer than he had been before she had arrived.

"I want to do the spell." Rachael says, quickly. "The risks don't matter. I have to get to the bottom of this. No matter what it takes."

"But what if-" Zeph gasps, his eyes widening at her willingness.

"What if nothing. This can't possibly be more risky than a shadow monster trying to kill me." Rachael retorts, with an aggressive shrug.

Griffin opened his mouth to respond, but shut it quickly having no room to argue. After a moment he nodded silently.

"Alright, Beckett. Let's do this." Rachael says slipping into the seat beside him, instead of sitting on the table.

"You're sure?" Beckett asks, for confirmation.

"Yeah, I'm down for any excuse to get you to touch my body." Rachael teases, with a smirk.

"Right...I'll just...get on with the spell." Beckett blushes, looking away from her for a moment, before turning back to her. He placed two fingers to her forehead, before closing his eyes and reading through the steps of the spell in his head. After a moment a warm sensation flooded through her body, as his magick ran through her. "Now, just think about these shadow monsters you encountered.."

She thought long and detailed about the creatures that attacked her, playing out each of the scenes in her head. Her vision went white for a moment as her magick quickly shot back at Beckett almost in retaliation. He quickly pulled his hand away, as a strange type of painful pleasure ran through him. She grabbed her her head as her vision cleared up.

Griffin worriedly started to stand up. "Rachael, are you okay?"

"I'm fine. That was just a lot..." Rachael mumbles, holding her head. Everyone waited, but nothing happened.

"I don't understand. That should have-" Beckett starts, getting interrupted by a loud bang.

Everyone looked around at each other confused, before another bang sounded. They all jumped up and started to follow the sound, winding up and down aisle of books. It started to get louder as they got close to the source. When they arrived at the culprit of the sound, they were met with a bookshelf.

"Is the sound coming from behind it?" Rachael questions. "I think I feel an air current...Something's telling me there's a hidden room behind here."

Griffin and Zeph quickly started to pull out the bookshelf, to reveal a large opening behind it. A book flew at her full speed, landing in her hands, already open to a specific page. She turned it over to look at the cover.

"Who is making all that racket?" The Librarian shouted from her desk at the front.

"Rachael, hurry! I don't think we're supposed to be here!" Shreya whispers anxiously.

The book was a dark brown with nine gems of all the Attunement colors and some swirling gold designs around them. She looked back over the page it had been open to skimming her eyes over it quickly. "There have been no recorded instances of a Blood-Att successfully taking a human soul. For more information, see the diagram on page 394."

She quickly flipped to the page only to find it missing, tore off completely from the binding. Only a few small scraps left behind barely noticeable that there had ever been a page there in the first place.

"Where are the rest of the pages?" Rachael panics, flipping back and forth between pages.

"Rach, we've gotta go! The librarian's coming!" Griffin whisper yells, urgently.

She quickly let go of the book and it fluttered back over to its place on its assigned book shelf. They all headed out and quickly pushed the bookshelf back into place, as the librarian turned the corner. The small group sprinted into a nearby aisle and quickly made their way back to the table they left all of their stuff on.

"The book was open to a page about Blood Magick." Rachael says quietly.

"Maybe someone's using Blood magick to send those monsters after you." Griffin says hushed.

"Why would someone go through all that effort, through? Blood magick is notoriously difficult to do." Zeph interjects.

"Not to mention illegal! Whoever they are, they must really want to get to you, Rachael." Shreya whisper yells.

"I'm so confused..." Rachael mumbles. "I just want to know what was on those pages. Obviously, someone thought they were worth keeping or worth hiding from the rest of the world."

"I bet they had a Blood magick spell on them! Or sketches of a dark ritual! Or some kind of terrible curse!" Zeph gasps.

"I really don't think you're helping..." Beckett sighs at Zeph, not wanting him to frighten Rachael more.

"Should we try to sneak back inside once the librarian is gone? See if we can learn anything else?" Shreya asks.

"I don't think so. The pages we need were all ripped out." Rachael sighs.

"Maybe they're somewhere inside?" Zeph suggests.

"Doubtful. If there was anything more useful to us than that book, my spell would have summoned it instead." Beckett says.

"Which means we should probably call it a night. I don't think the library will have any more answers for us." Griffin sighs.

"I feel like we barely learned anything...too bad someone ripped out those pages. Then at least we'd have a lead." Shreya huffs.

"I'd say it was a fairly successful night, actually. Now, we know what type of magick to associate with these creatures." Beckett smiles, optimistically.

"And we discovered another cool Penderghast secret!" Zeph smiles.

"You're right. We're one step closer to figuring this all out." Rachael nods, with a warm smiles.

Everyone walked out of the library, satisfied with they're findings for the night. Later in the night, Rachael stepped out of the shower wrapping a towel around herself. She glanced at herself in the foggy mirror, wet hair framing her face in a messy tangle. After she looked away for a moment to start putting on her pajamas, she glanced back in the mirror to see her hair looked different. It took her a moment to recognize that it was her reflection that continued to attack her staring back through the fog. The reflection rose her hand to the glass and began to write something in the steam. 'Blood'. That's all it said. Simply just Blood.
