🌻Chapter Eleven: Part Three; Double Double🌻
They both sprinted for the doors out of the main hall as soon as two upperclassmen walk in. Rachael shoves Atlas begins a statue quickly, the stairs head turning to look at her.
"I'm sorry, please, just shhhh!" Rachael whisper yells. The students passed by them without a second glance. "Well that worked better than expected."
They exited the building, relived to see that the campus was nearly empty this late at night.
"Alright well, the freshman dorms are that building over there." Rachael says pointing at it.
"So what, we just make a run for it?" Atlas asks.
Rachael opens her mouth to respond before noticing the statue in the middle of campus with eyes that shined like the beam of a lighthouse, scoping out for intruders. "Only if you want to get vaporized... Maybe there's some way to distract it?"
"Got it. When I say run. You run." Atlas says eyeing the statue before making a weird gesture over her body, before taking a step back to reveal a duplicate of herself. She pushed it towards the opposite direction of the dorms and started sprinting towards them.
"Hey! You didn't say run." Rachael grumbles, chasing after her.
"I thought it was implied. Keep up!" Atlas says rolling her eyes.
The statue kept its gaze on the duplicate, not even seeming to notice the twins.
Atlas jumped over a small bed of flowers glancing back to yell back at Rachael. "Tinkling Tinnies! Careful of those, their flower buds are actual bells!"
Rachael gracefully leaped over the flowers landing in a perfect plié, before continuing to run. They continued across the yard and threw themselves into the doors of the Freshman dorm building. The RA was sitting behind her desk in the main lobby scribbling in a piece of paper.
"Alright, we just need to get past her, and then it's a straight shot to my room." Rachael whispers to Atlas.
"Got it, say no more." Atlas nods, starting to make a complicated gesture in the air, a crackling noise filling the air.
"Atlas! What are you doing?" Rachael whisper yells.
"Knocking her out." Atlas shrugs casually.
"What!? Stop it!" Rachael says urgently grabbing her arm to stop her. "Cool it, Kora. I'll distract her. You just need to slip by quietly and get to that first hallway there. Got it?"
Atlas shrugged in return, before Rachael walked up to the RA's desk to distract her. "Hi, Rachael. What can I do for you?"
She glanced back to see Atlas carefully sneak behind a potted plant almost knocking it over. "I-I just wanted to ask you if you've seen that!" Rachael asks pointing at a painting behind her desk allowing Atlas to sprint into the hallway successfully.
"You mean... the portrait of Celestina Qu'itvitsits that's been hanging here all semester?" The RA asks contorting her face in confusion.
"Right! That's her name! And you've definitely seen it so... Thanks!" Rachael says, before speed walking off towards Atlas. They sprinted down the hallways and rushed inside her dorm. Almost immediately Rachael dramatically collapsed on the couch in their living area. "Shit, that was close... We should have come straight back, like Swan told us to."
"You actually handled yourself very well back there. Maybe I didn't need to be as worried about you as I thought." Atlas says, leaning against the back of the couch, looking down at her sister still face down on the cushions. "Now that we're alone, we have to-"
She was interrupted by the sounds of footprints and voices coming from the hallway, approaching the doors.
"Well, that's it. Rachael's not anywhere on campus... That mirror must have taken her somewhere else entirely." Shreya's voice sounded softly from the hallway.
"The way the glass shattered I've never seen nothing like it..." Beckett's voice was shaky, but grew louder as they got closer.
"My friends! They're not supposed to know about you. Quick to my room-" Rachael says jumping up and ushering her towards her bedroom door. She got to it fiddling with the door handle for a moment before pulling it open and practically swan diving inside. As Atlas was about to follow the dorm room door opened and she's spotted immediately.
"Rachael?! Where have you been? We've been looking everywhere for you!" Shreya gasps rushing over to her.
Atlas froze with a panic setting in over her, glancing in the almost shut bedroom door for help. "Roll with it. Just pretend to be me!" Rachael whispers to her from behind the door.
"Y-Yes. I am Eli-Rachael! Your friend!" Atlas says quickly, trying to hide the nervousness in her voice by attempting a smile. Though it really only looked like a frown with teeth.
"What happened to your hair?!" Zeph exclaims as he stares at it.
"Laugh it off. I'm optimistic, be optimistic." Rachael says noticing her struggle.
"Uh, ha! That's so funny... you. That's just like... you. Always cracking jokes." Atlas says, painfully.
Rachael winced placing her head on her hands getting hit hard by the second hand embarrassment of the situation.
"Well, she recognizes my comedic genius, so she must be alright." Zeph smiles, looking around at the others who aren't as convinced.
"Nevermind all that. If we were really concerned about that we would be pointing out that her eyes are almost five shades darker than they normally are, her skin is more of a cool tone than a warm pale, that she's wearing pants and a leather jacket, her eyebrows are much more angled then I've personally ever seen, and the warmth she provides in the air is much more cooling that it's usually is, but none of that matters! What matters is where have you been? The mirror room was completely destroyed, and you were just gone!" Beckett sputters off, all in one breath adding to his disheveled appearance.
"Yeah, where did that mirror take you? We looked all over campus!" Shreya nods, agreeing with Beckett.
"It... It took me to Pend Square. I don't know what went wrong, but it dropped me right into a dumpster. I tried this spell to clean off, but something went wrong and it turned my hair all white and whatever... he said. Guess I'll have to have Swan fix it tomorrow." Atlas says coming up with her excuse on the spot.
"Oh, no need! That's just a simple transmutation spell, I can quite easily-" Beckett says jumping at the chance to help, to do something, to do anything really.
"Touch my hair, and I'll punch the eyebrows off of your face!" Atlas says, her eyes darkening at him, and for the first time any of them had seen he looked small and took a step back. Any sense of the Beckett Harrington they had come to know seemed gone or at least buried deep down, so all that remained was the tiny, anxious, doubtful Beckett he always tries to keep hidden under lock and key. The version of him that he'd only shown to Katrina and Rachael, and now that to him she was acting like this it was hard for him to hide it.
A silence had fallen over the room as everyone watched the interaction with a strange awkward confusion.
"Sorry, I've has a really rough day. I'd like to just go to bed." Atlas says just trying to end this atrocity already.
"Oh. Well of course. We're just... glad you're safe. I guess we should all go off to bed, hm?" Shreya says, biting her lip concernedly.
"Thanks. All of you." Atlas says, watching them all nod and turn to leave. She raised an eyebrow at Beckett as he turned around and looked her over eyebrows furrowed in worry. He quickly wrapped her in a tight hug and she went completely rigid though she didn't fight it.
"You..." Beckett sighed, his voice wavering and his grip tightening. He seemed to put up his front again when his feelings weren't reciprocated by her, but anything would be able to break it down again. "You have no idea how trouble some you are!"
"I- Hey!" Atlas murmurs from where her head was pressed against his chest.
He put her at arms length looking her directly in the eyes, something deep down in him knew she wasn't who she said she was, but he allowed his emotions to cloud his better judgement. "Just going and disappearing like that! Worrying all of your friends! It was incredibly thoughtless of you and... and... And I'm really glad you're okay."
"Thanks..." Atlas says confused and alarmed as he pulled her back in for another hug. After a moment or two he pulled away, opening his mouth to speak again before quickly closing it and almost sprinting out of her dorm presumably panicked by her unresponsiveness.
Once everyone was gone, Atlas ducked inside Rachael's room, flopping down on her bed with a loud sigh of relief.
"Your friends talk so much. No wonder you're so behind on your magical studies." Atlas sighs, looking over at her sister leaning against the wall.
"I am not. And my friends are fine, thank you very much." Rachael says.
"Your friends are weak, no offense." Atlas shrugs. "Did you see the way, the stuff fancy one looked at me?! It was odd!"
"What's odd is the weird way you describe people. Besides it wasn't 'odd'. It was sweet. Did you see how red Beckett's face got? He's totally in love with me." Rachael giggles, flopping down on the bed beside her dramatically.
Their conversation was quickly interrupted by a knock on her bedroom door making both girls sit up to look at it confused, they exchanged a glance before Rachael got up to get it.
