Chapter 10: Anchors from hell

Arcan stood in front of them not saying anything with his hand firmly gripping a sword. "Arcan...are you okay?" Pyro asked shocked to see his friend. Arcan still remained silent and walked around the hangar with a puzzled face. Zach stepped over to Pyro and whispered in his ear. "Arcan never had a teleport, he didn't trust them" he said quietly looking over at the phenomenon in suspicion. Pyro nodded and walked over to him putting his hand on Arcan's shoulder.

Suddenly Arcan grabbed Pyro's arm and threw him metres in the air seemingly effortlessly. The element marines simultaneously aimed their weapons up at him and edged closer. Pyro pulled himself up muttering under his breath. "Sir, please drop the sword" a marine ordered as he moved towards Arcan. Instantly Arcan threw the sword at him making it slice through his chest painfully. In response Pyro fired a powerful burst of flames from his hand knocking Arcan to the ground. "Zach, marines get back all of you, he's an...anti-element" he explained ushering the others back.

Arcan stood up quickly and turned with an evil grin. "You got it, I am not technically Arcan, let's call me...Arken so we can differentiate" he said taking his sword from the dead marine's corpse. He walked towards Pyro with flames running down his arms. As Pyro drew his sword the ship suddenly rocked violently making everyone fall over. Pyro pressed a button on his earpiece and began speaking. "Davis, what the hell is going on out there?" he asked feeling the ship begin to turn on its side. "That voidwalker cruiser just shot two massive anchors at our ship, they're embedded in the laboratory and barracks and it's making us fall" Davis explained coughing as he did so.

Before Pyro could press the point the ship turned completely on its side forcing him to leap and grab the hinges of the doors. Laughing while he did so Arken dropped to the controls and opened the hangar shields making wind rush in. Marines grabbed onto each other trying to avoid falling. However several marines lost their grips and went plunging out of The Hope never to be seen again. "Zach, take a team and get the anchor out of the laboratory, Buzzard do the same with the barracks, I'll try to kill this infernal thing" Pyro shouted over the wind.

Zach nodded and ran out of the nearest door taking ten of the marines with him. "Our door is on the other side of the hangar, give us a sec" Buzzard shouted pulling out his pistol. Simultaneously his team aimed their weapons at the other side of the hangar and fired grappling hooks that attached themselves to air vents. Then the marines began climbing across on the hooks trying not to look down at the monumental drop beneath them.

One of the marines accidentally dropped his assault rifle and Arken caught it from the corner he was hiding in. He quickly began firing shots up at the marines and managed to hit one of the ropes making three of the soldiers fall to their deaths. Pyro dropped down and supported his feet on two poles holding up a gantry high above him. He pulled out his own assault rifle and began shooting at Arken vengefully. "See how you like it you bugger!" he shouted nodding at Buzzard to keep moving. The shots forced Arken back and hit the wall inches away from his head.

Meanwhile Zach's team had just about reached the laboratory and were having to run on the walls to stay upright. "It's just here, let's move" Zach ordered leaping through the door and falling back onto a wall. The lab was completely white on every surface and was probably the cleanest part of the ship. Vials full of strange multi-coloured liquids rested on the tables and a scientist had hidden himself at the far end of the room. Zach ran over to him checking to see if he had any wounds. "The anchor's in the next room and the only way to get there is through a security door, I presume you know the password" he stated and the scientist nodded jumping over to the door. He typed on a number pad and the door slowly opened into a corridor.

"The room is just down that corridor, there aren't any more security doors so I'll wait outside" the scientist explained quickly exiting the lab. Zach cautiously moved in and pushed through another door into an identical lab. On the wall at the far side of the room was a large black four pronged anchor which had embedded itself. Zach ran over to it and tried with all his might to pull it out. "No use, I can't get it out...stand back people, I'm gonna blow this thing out" he explained pulling several grenades from his belt. A marine stood ready with sealing foam and nodded making Zach prime the grenades and drop them running back. With a blue explosion the anchor fell out of the room leaving a large hole in the wall. Wind rushed in and the marine threw Zach the foam canister. Zach quickly used the foam and sealed the hole breathing out in relief.

With one anchor removed the ship began turning on its usual side once more but was still at a diagonal angle. Pyro stood still holding on for dear life in the hangar and had an idea. He aimed his assault rifle at the hangar shield controls and fired making them spark and fail. Emergency counter measures caused a large titanium door to close on both of the hangar entrances giving him some breathing room. The few element marines that had stayed with him instantly began firing at Arken putting him under a volley of laser bolts.

Meanwhile Buzzard's team had reached the entrance to the barracks and were about to enter when Friday's voice came through their earpiece's. "Be careful team, voidwalkers still have control of the barracks" she reported linking a live security feed of the barracks to their helmets. "Great..." Buzzard remarked sarcastically reloading his pistol. He kicked the door in and found dozens of voidwalkers executing marines who had been caught off guard. A large officer stood with them carrying a vicious looking sword and he beheaded a marine as Buzzard stepped inside.

The officer roared as the marine team quickly took cover behind lockers and began firing at the voidwalkers. Buzzard fired several shots at the officer and speedily hid realising that his shots had done nothing. The officer charged towards him smashing through lockers and storage chests. It punched him in the chest knocking him against a nearby wall. This made him drop his pistol a few metres away just out of reach. As the officer tried to slam its sword down onto him he pulled out a combat knife and deflected the swipe just in time. He then quickly stabbed the officer through the chest standing up and running over to his pistol. Before the officer could react he emptied his magazine into its head instantly killing it. He took a deep breath and held his chest in pain looking around for the anchor.

At the opposite end of the barracks the anchor rested embedded in the wall. Buzzard frantically looked around for something to bring it out as his marines began to die one by one thanks to the voidwalker troops. At last he spotted weapons strewn over the floor and saw a grenade launcher just behind a pair of voidwalkers. He realised he had no ammunition left in his pistol and drew his combat knife once more. Charging towards them he threw the knife at the first's head killing it before it had chance to react. The second began firing shots at him making him swerve out of the way as he continued to run towards it. As he reached it the voidwalker tried to punch him making him duck as he pulled his knife from a corpse's head. He sliced at the voidwalker's chest emptying its organs onto the floor and leaving it to die.

He quickly grabbed the grenade launcher and opened it ecstatic to see that there were still six grenades loaded in it. As the voidwalkers began overpowering his team he fired a shot at the anchor dislodging it but not completely getting rid of it. Before he could fire another shot a voidwalker shot his hand making him drop the launcher. He threw his knife at the voidwalker and picked up the grenade launcher once more trying to ignore the pain in his hand. He fired another grenade making a huge hole in the wall and completely getting rid of the anchor. The remaining voidwalkers looked on in horror and were quickly eliminated by the marines while they were distracted.

The ship finally levelled out causing everyone on board to breathe a sigh of relief. In the hangar Pyro fell down to the ground and quickly got up realising that Arken was once more a threat. True to form Arken had quickly recovered and was charging towards Pyro and his marines. "Marines, fire!" Pyro ordered unleashing a volley of red laser bolts that hit Arken like a hurricane. However Arken was an anti-element and these shots barely scratched him let alone impede his progress. He ran into the group of marines and began hacking and slashing his way through them spilling blood on every surface. Pyro ran over and tried to help with genesis but the marines were too injured with most limbs missing.

In seconds Arken had slaughtered the marines leaving himself and Pyro the only ones left in the room. Pyro drew his own sword determined to avenge all the people who had already died to this anti-element and prevent any more deaths. Simultaneously they charged at one another clashing with their swords in an explosion of flames. Arken quickly kicked Pyro in the knee and then punched him in the face making him fall to the ground. Pyro attempted to stab Arken in the chest but Arken grabbed his sword and threw it behind him.

Arken stood over Pyro with a malicious grin holding his sword. "You fought well for an element but you didn't stand a chance" he stated bringing his sword down. Pyro shot a burst of flames into Arken's chest making him fly backwards and slam against a wall. "Damn right" he said running over and grabbing his sword. An element marine who had survived the onslaught had managed to crawl over to the secondary controls and pressed a button opening the titanium doors. Meanwhile Pyro was once more locked in a vicious sword battle with Arken neither giving up.

Pyro kicked Arken in the chest and pushed him into the centre of the hangar.

Suddenly the sound of an engine could be heard in the distance quickly getting closer. The Resolute flew into the hangar spraying its lasers at Arken. It speedily landed and the rear doors opened up. Arcan stepped out with his flame sword in hand, a blinding light behind him. "So, my anti-element is here, time I taught him some manners" he stated shooting a continuous stream of powerful flames at Arken burning him to a crisp. Arken stood up attempting to retaliate but was blown away to the edge of the hangar. Arcan strolled over to him and stared into his blackened eyes for a second before kicking him off the edge.

Pyro staggered over to him with a smile. "Good to see you old friend, thanks for the help...is he dead?" he asked looking out down to the ground far beneath them. Arcan shook his head with a grim expression and looked over to The Resolute. "I was unconscious a while after the crash, when I awoke I fixed your ship up and immediately flew up here because I heard about an anti-element over radio chatter" he explained knowing that the fact he'd repaired the ship would make Pyro happy.

Meanwhile on the bridge of The Hope Davis stood firing all of his cannons at the nearby voidwalker cruiser and watching in happiness as it exploded into flames. Suddenly Friday appeared next to the radar console with a face of panic. "Hundreds of additional contacts inbound sir, they're not elements or voidwalkers" she explained as lots of red blips appeared on the scanner. "What fresh hell is this?" Davis asked putting his head in his hands at the thought of another fight. Before anyone could answer hundreds of frigates appeared above them completely outnumbering everyone. "Perfect" he exclaimed sarcastically walking over to the window.
