Chapter 24 - Run, Fly, Touch the Sky
"THIS IS AMAZING!" Enya screamed from the top of her lungs as they flew upon the wind, her red silk dress whipping in the wind. Laec grinned at her from where he was saddled up on Toothless.
"Hey, watch this!" Laec let his body go limp, and he fell off Toothless.
"Laec!" Enya cried, but immediately began laughing as she realised Toothless had swooped down to catch him. He ruffled his hair and smiled awkwardly at her.
"Show off," Ash muttered to Aura, who giggled. "Hey, Laec! She doesn't need you to show off anymore, you're betrothed!"
"Shut up!" Laec grinned, doing a back-flip on the night fury. Enya tried the move from where she was flying and perfected it. Aura glided over a cloud gracefully and used her powers to make the wind more powerful. They flew fast and furious, but the journey was still long.
As they approached the Kingdom of Quart, they noticed it becoming darker, more brooding. There were no people to be seen, no colour or life anywhere. In fact, there was so little light the four of them almost emitted it. Their bright dresses and military uniforms seemed too colourful for such a place of misery.
"What happened here?" Enya whispered, her face falling.
"We don't know," Laec replied quietly, "but something happened to make them all hate our kingdoms. This is where all Nori's supporters live. Not that they had any choice in the matter."
Enya gazed at the destruction with wide and fearful eyes. But then she realised what had happened the last time she let fear get the better of her. She closed her eyes momentarily and cleared her dazed and scared brain. She was never going to let that happen to her again.
"Are you all right?" Laec asked her, concerned.
"What?" Enya muttered, then came back to her senses. "Yes, I'm fine. Fine." She stared ahead of her defiantly, her gaze fixed on the horizon.
Laec wasn't convinced, but he just frowned and continued flying. They had to do this, and they had never felt stronger but at the same time, they had never felt weaker. Ash, Aura and Laec were heading into a world they had only visited once, but Enya was practically an expert on Nori's ways of torture and cruelty. But in spite of Nori's best efforts, she hadn't cracked.
"Enya!" Laec shouted over the wind. She turned to face him, her wild red hair flowing behind her.
"Yes?"
"You, you're sure you can do this?"
Enya gave him a look that was partly of defiance and partly of fear.
"I'll be fine."
"Enya. Come over here."
Enya flew beside Toothless and Laec, puzzled.
"Laec?"
"Get on," Laec instructed.
Enya mounted Toothless, sitting behind Laec, still extremely confused.
"Laec, wha -"
She never finished her sentence. Laec had turned around and pressed his lips firmly upon hers, their lips crashing together in a haze of cold winds, concern and confusion. Enya took a moment to register what was going on, but soon she kissed back. Laec tangled his fingers in her hair and felt like he'd never been more complete.
"What was that for?" Enya asked as they broke apart.
"I don't want to see you alone. I can't lose you again Enya. Not now."
Enya wrapped her arms around Laec's waist and buried her face into his shoulder.
"I promise."
