It's been three weeks in this place and not much has happened. I've just been going to classes and avoiding the civilians here. For people who were excited about coming with me on this mission, my best friends have abandoned me.
I'm slowly but surely beginning to hate the mission.
I haven't caught any word of my target either. From the intel I gathered from being around the cheerleaders here, he's been benched for three weeks from an injury, so no one has seen him since, which is strange to me.
How is he keeping up with his law classes if he's not here?
Yes, I already found out that he's doing law here. Not only that, but he's the top student in the faculty, something that didn't come as a surprise to me given the fact that Cypher takes pride in the intelligence of their agents.
It's one of their most recognized assets.
"Aren't you Noelle?"
I turned to the source of the voice to face a short girl with bland hair and a face full of pimples. Puberty clearly hasn't been forgiving with her, but I wasn't about to say anything. She was looking at me like she genuinely knew who I was though.
"Who's asking?" I replied.
"Oh, I'm just a big fan of cheerleading, and watching you at finals a couple of months back was amazing. I'm still watching it over and over whenever I have a chance," she told me excitedly.
Cheerleading finals?
Before I could respond, the distinct yipping of a puppy headed in my direction as a white Maltese puppy ran up to me. Two girls were running after it. One was a redhead I'd seen around a couple of times, and the other was that Latina I bumped into three weeks back.
I bent to pick the puppy up since it was demanding my attention. Now, I don't usually get sappy about things like puppies, but this one was just so adorable. I quickly picked up that it's a female as she licked my face, making me laugh.
"We're so sorry about her. She's never run away like that before," the redhead told me, except there was something off about her tone.
Like she knew something I didn't.
"It's no worries. What's her name?" I asked.
"Sparkles," they both informed.
"Cute," I commented.
"She really likes you. It's almost as if she knows you," the Latina said, using the same damn knowing tone that her friend used.
I ignored the tone anyway. "I'm new here, so that's not possible."
"Sunny, and this is my best friend Bridgette," the Latina introduced.
"Noelle," I responded.
"I bumped into you a couple weeks back and you say you're new, so what are you studying?" Sunny asked.
"Medicine," I replied.
"That's cool. What about your social life here? Have you made any friends?" Bridgette asked me.
I sighed. "No. I came here with my best friends but they seem to have disappeared on me."
"Bummer! Well, we don't mind being your friends, granted you'll probably see me most because Bridge here goes to MIT," Sunny told me.
I raised an eyebrow. "You don't mind being friends with a complete stranger?"
"All friends started off as strangers chica. Always remember that," Sunny cleverly played back.
"Alright, I'm in, except I'm off to class right now," I informed.
"That's completely fine. Let's exchange numbers and then you'll text us when you're free. We can go out and get to know each other," Bridgette suggested.
It wasn't a terrible idea, and the thought of having girlfriends to talk to didn't sound all that bad now that I'd been abandoned. I would obviously tell them nothing about my secret life, but it definitely wouldn't do any harm to hang with them. They seem pretty cool.
The rest of my day consisted of three long classes, and by the time I was done there, I just wanted to take a nap. I don't know what possessed me to tell the agency that I wanted to do medicine. I should've gone with something easy.
But then again, I've always loved challenges.
I managed to get a good four hour nap in, except by the time I woke up, it was pretty late. I had no sleep, and I didn't think it would be appropriate to wake my new friends up to hang, so I'd just go out and have some food before coming back.
I changed into a pair of black skinny jeans, a black and white sweater and matching Adidas sneakers. I wasn't in the mood to do anything with my hair, especially since I knew that it would be slightly chilly outside, so I settled for a white beanie and headed out.
There were surprisingly people outside, but then again, if there's one thing college has taught me, it's that even smart people like to have a good time. There were even some couples around as I made my way to the twenty four hour cafe.
I got my food, which included a caramel latte, and ate in a booth alone, watching people acting foolish outside. I couldn't remember a time when I was so carefree; where I had no worries and could just live in the moment, laughing with friends and sharing stolen kisses with my boyfriend.
But then again, it's not like I have all my memories.
I have no idea why the agency thinks I'm stupid, but they told me that I had been taken and that the enemy managed to take away my memories just before I was saved, except nothing about that adds up.
I only say that because I have some vivid dreams where everything feels so familiar, but I can never see the faces of the people in my dreams. I did however, dream about the Latina, Sunny. It was on the night of the day I met her.
I dreamt that we were dancing in someone's house.
Even seeing her earlier had my mind tingling weirdly. I haven't told anyone about any of this, especially since I don't think the agency trusts me yet. The fact that my boss and my boyfriend are keeping me at such arm's length is enough evidence for me.
Something bigger is going on here, and I'm going to make it my personal mission to find out just what.
When I was done with my meal, I was wide awake. I wasn't in the mood to go back to my lonely room, so I settled for walking around the school. I had been walking for a while when my vision was disrupted by what I can only pinpoint as the reason why this walk was probably a bad idea.
He was doing a push-up with one hand, and I was mesmerized. I was leaning against the light pole, and before I knew it, I was watching him workout. I couldn't see him fully from where I was, but just his figure was enough to have me hypnotized.
"You know, you passed creepy like fifteen minutes ago."
I jumped at the sound of his voice. I wasn't expecting it, and neither did I expect to get caught. I mean, I'm an agent for goodness sake. I looked at where he was, except he was looking away from me, lifting weights.
So there's a chance he wasn't talking to me right?
"Yes blossom, I'm talking to you."
I have no idea why, but the name he called me by had me feeling all kinds of giddy. I stepped away from the light post as he walked over to the bench to get a towel. I walked towards him as he wiped away his sweat.
Once again, I was deemed mute as I watched him pack his stuff away. Now that I was closer, I was stunned to find that this enigma of a human is my target. He was dressed in black sweats and I watched as he put on his long sleeved top.
"Do you always lurk in the shadows and watch strange guys?" he asked amusedly, finally turning to look at me.
My breath hitched at the sight of his amber eyes.
"No," I mumbled, my cheeks tinged.
He shot me a look. "Oh, just dangerous strange guys then?"
"Are you dangerous?" I countered.
He rolled his eyes. "Don't you think that's a question you should've asked yourself when you were stalking me?"
"I was not stalking you!" I defended.
He smirked. "Sure you weren't."
"What are you doing out here anyway? It's three in the morning," I pointed out.
"Thank you Captain Obvious for that unnecessary update. I'm well aware of the time," he taunted.
"So you just make it a habit to work out on the football field at odd hours?" I asked, ignoring the jab.
He crossed his arms, clearly amused. "Are you campus police?"
"No," I replied in confusion.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Did you happen to reserve the football field for yourself?" he teased.
Asshole.
"Fuck you," I said before turning to leave.
He caught my hand, and brought me right into his chest. Both my hands landed firmly on his toned chest as he looked down at me. The look in his eyes was intense, and all I could do was bite my lip, hoping he couldn't hear my heartbeat.
I thought my heart would damn near escape when he lowered his mouth to my ear. "By the looks of things, you'd like to."
By the time I realized what had happened, he was a distance away with his bag slung over his shoulder. I can't even describe the amount of fury I felt in that moment. I have never in my life been that blindsided before.
But there's just something about the damn boy.
I stayed rooted to the spot, going through different emotions and trying to calm myself down. I was feeling strange, and it's the kind of strange I've never felt before. There's something different about me, and I know for a fact that it's something else that the agency is hiding from me.
"Here you go."
I looked up, confused since the boy was handing me a cup. "It's a caramel latte."
"Why?" I asked as I accepted it.
"Something tells me that you're a sucker for caramel," he replied, going over to the bench. I noticed then that his bag was nowhere in sight as I walked over to sit next to him.
"You couldn't have possibly known that," I commented.
"I'm very observant blossom," was all he said.
Of course he's observant- he's Cypher's best agent.
"Are you going to tell me why you're outside so late? Something tells me it's not a norm for you," I questioned.
He shrugged. "That's because it isn't."
"Are you always so cryptic?" I blurted.
He turned to give me a raised eyebrow. "I've known you for less than thirty minutes and you want to play my diary? I don't even know your name."
"Noelle Solano," I said, suddenly shy.
"Beautiful name," he commented.
Because my cheeks totally needed more motivation.
"What about you? Are you going to tell me your name?" I asked.
He smirked. "You already know it."
He couldn't possibly know that I'm an agent right?
"Uhm, I'm pretty sure I don't," I said innocently.
He chuckled, shaking his head, before sending me a breath taking smile. "It's Xander Demetriou."
Oh my ovaries.
I barely managed to keep my voice the same. "How come everyone calls you Six?"
"I thought you didn't know what my name is?" he asked, humour lacing his tone.
I looked away, embarrassed. "Ok, so I lied, but I didn't think you'd tell me. I'd like to think anyone who calls themselves by a number has something to hide."
"You're the only person who knows it," he informed.
My head snapped in his direction so fast, I felt the kink in my neck. "I am?"
He nodded. "And now you're sworn to secrecy."
"I won't tell anyone," I found myself promising.
"I know you won't blossom," he said with a charming smile.
"Blossom? Why do you call me that?" I asked.
He smiled, looking out at the football field as though he were remembering something. "Someone special to me once told me that blossoms are flowers and flowers are nice, granted she was defending infecting the world with little blossoms."
That makes no sense to me.
"And you think I'm nice?" I asked in confusion.
He looked back at me, as serious as they come. "I think that you're beautiful blossom."
I could only sit there and blush as he looked back out into the field. There's definitely something about him. That's all I could think as I continued staring at him. I knew he knew that I was staring at him, but he didn't say anything about it.
"The stars look stunning tonight," he commented after a while.
"You watch them too?" I asked, a little too excitedly.
I absolutely love stargazing.
He looked at me, clearly holding in a laugh. "Someone special to me got me hooked on doing just that. She always gets this look in her eyes..."
I was listening to him, I really was, but the stars really looked magnificent. It was even a full moon, and I was surprised at just how clear they looked. When I realized that he'd stopped his sentence without finishing it, I looked back at him.
"...just like that one."
"Is it the same special someone who told you about blossoms?" I asked. I could feel myself actually getting jealous.
That's insane right?
"As a matter of fact, it is," he replied.
"She sounds amazing," I said lowly, feeling somewhat rejected.
"You have no idea," he said, just as lowly.
My heart suddenly felt heavy and I needed to leave, so I got up. "I have to go."
"Will I see you again?" he asked, also standing.
I frowned. "What about your special someone?"
"What about her?" he asked, seemingly amused.
Why am I even remotely attracted to this asshole?
"I can't imagine any girl being ok with their boyfriend flirting and spending time with other girls," I replied.
He took a step towards me, smirking, and I stepped back. "Is that what we're doing? Flirting?"
"You're definitely flirting with me, and you have the nerve to give me a name that your girlfriend apparently approves of," I spat.
His demeanour didn't change as he took another step towards me, with me reacting the same. "Fiancée."
"What?" I asked incredulously.
"I gave you a name my fiancée would approve of," he shamelessly corrected.
"You disgust me," I said, appalled.
Unfortunately I stepped back and tripped, but he managed to catch me. "I may disgust you, but everything about you right now says otherwise."
"Get off of me!" I said angrily, pushing him away.
"See you tomorrow blossom," he said amusedly before walking away from me.
Unlike the first time when he walked away, this time I wanted to kill him. The rage in me was all aimed at how much I wanted to make him pay for his cheating ways. How dare he cheat on his poor fiancée so unashamedly?
In fact, I think I'll have to find out who she is so that I can let the poor child know about this deceit.
"Who the hell got you so pissed off?" my best friend asked when I walked into the room.
I jumped, not having expected to see her there. "When the hell did you come back?"
"Ten minutes ago. Now, who has you so pissed off?" she asked.
"Six," I fumed.
Despite my anger, I was sticking to the stupid promise I made to not share his name.
"You've met him already?" she asked, surprised.
I nodded. "But then how come you're so angry?"
"As opposed to?" I asked.
"Uhm, never mind. What did he do?" she questioned.
"The asshole is cheating on his fiancée, whoever the poor child is," I stated. The last thing I expected was for her to burst out laughing.
Inconsiderate bitch.
"This isn't the least bit funny Winter. The poor girl is probably out there, not even aware that her fiancé hits on girls early in the morning," I said seriously.
"I'm sorry, but why does this upset you so much exactly? Did he hit on you?" she asked.
"Not that that should matter in any kind of way, but yes, he did," I replied.
"And what exactly is it that set you off?" she asked.
"He keeps referring to me as blossom, and the asshole had the nerve to say that his fiancée would basically approve of the pet name he's decided to give someone who isn't his fiancée," I explained.
She giggled, but stopped at my glare. "Did he tell you anything else about her?"
"Just that she loves stargazing," I said.
She shifted, sitting comfortably on the bed. "Don't you love stargazing?"
"You love it too. What's your point?" I asked.
"You don't know anything about his fiancée Elle. For all you know, she's no longer alive, and he just likes you because you remind him of her," she argued.
"Oh great! I remind him of a dead girl!" I huffed.
"I still don't understand why this bothers you so much, just for the record. If I had to make a perfect observation, I'd think you were crushing on him hard and you don't like the fact that his heart possibly belongs to someone else," she pointed out.
And I didn't like a single thing she was saying.
"I am not crushing on him," I denied.
She waved her hand dismissively. "Continue lying to yourself then."
"What's that?" I asked.
"What's what?" she countered.
I grabbed her left hand, showing her the diamond ring on her ring finger. "This."
"Oh, it's from my fiancé," she replied.
"What fiancé? I didn't even know you were in a relationship!" I said in disbelief.
"Yeah, it happened while you were gone. It all happened very quickly, and I couldn't help but say yes. Xander is just the best. I can't wait to be Mrs Demetriou," she gushed, looking at the ring.
Meanwhile, I was completely frozen.
"Xander?" I barely got out.
She nodded. "Mhmm."
"Winter, have you ever met this guy?" I asked.
It was a valid question because she's dated someone she's never met before.
She scowled. "What does that matter? I'm happy. I thought you'd be happy for me."
How do I put this without breaking her heart?
"How long have you guys been together?" I asked.
"Six months," she replied.
Oh boy! "And you have no idea what he looks like?"
"I don't care. I love him for who he is on the inside," she said nonchalantly.
This isn't good. "How did you get the ring?"
"He sent it to me via post," she responded.
"Do you truly see a future with him?" I asked my final question.
"Yes."
I got up and left the room on a hunt for my target. It would seem I would be killing him way sooner than I had anticipated. Just as well since that means I get to go back to my boyfriend and forget I ever met the asshole.
I reached his room, and I only knew it was his because of Carter. I banged my fists on the door and waited a few seconds before the door opened to reveal a half naked target. My words disappeared from my throat as I followed the water drops down his bare chest.
While the appeal had me hooked, the longer I looked, the more I realized that he had multiple scars, scars that I found myself worrying about. I know that he's the best agent that Cypher has, and these scars tell their own stories. I was about to reach out and touch one.
"May I help you with something?" he spoke, bringing me out of my stupor.
"How dare you propose to my best friend and then hit on me!" I spat.
He leaned on the doorframe, his signature smirk present. "What are you talking about?"
"You said your name is Xander Demetriou, and my best friend just told me that a person by that name, who she's never met, is her fiancé. How dare you!" I said, reaching out to hit him, only for him to catch my hand.
"Blossom, it's four in the morning, and as furious as you are, there's no-one you're killing tonight. Go back and be with your best friend. Celebrate the happy news with her," he told me.
"She deserves to know that she's engaged to a snake!" I said angrily.
"A snake whose bones you want to jump as we speak. Besides, how is this a bad thing? If you really want to break us up, then go ahead. That way, I'll be free for you to have," he pointed out.
"I would never want you," I said darkly, the familiar anger bubbling within me.
"Alright! Before you actually kill him and regret it later, I think I'll step in now," Carter said behind him.
I frowned. "Carter?"
"Elo love! Meet your fiancé, Xander Demetriou," he introduced, looking at the boy I initially came here to kill.
"My what?" I asked, baffled.
"You're my special someone," Six told me.
What the hell is going on here?
