@Ilovesweettarts2016 : Freak Accident
Ilovesweettarts2016: I hope this review will match your expectations, and that it will help you with your writing. Good luck on your writer's journey!
Prologue
There were several things that were great about your prologue:
- You use of good grammar, although a few sentences could still be shortened or moved around.
- Your first paragraph is intriguing, drawing the reader in, and you have a lovable character. You also use expressive verb-choice to show the way your character moves. In general, your word choice only made the story seem more mysterious and your character more nervously excited.
- You've clearly thought about the method you want Mr Livingstone to use to revive his son, and you use correct medical words!
However, you also often told us things, which lessened the mystery (e.g. what was Dr Livingstone so excited about?) instead of showing us (e.g. what has he been doing during the previous years?). I'm also left with the question: how has the accident changed him as a person? Will this show more once he has Adam back? A few sentences also seemed a bit awkward (but I pointed those out). The telling instead of showing is the main thing to concentrate on improving in this chapter.
Chapter 1
Wow. Your narrative in chapter one is so different from the prologue, characteristic of the MC! Distinguishing characters in such a way from the very start is an amazing feat. I loved the humorous and frustrated passages at the start of the chapter, and the behaviour of the bumbling toddlers. You characterised Maddie and Dr. Livingstone with amazing ease from the start and throughout. Maddie remained sarcastic, and I loved the new details we learned about her - like her commitment to church.
There was one thing I wondered about in your chapter. It might be something to think about, and might possibly add to the story. Often, people find it difficult to admit things and apologise. Characters are figments of our imagination, but they're meant to have the same depth as humans - and I wonder if there's something you could do to make your characters even rounder:
I was surprised when Maddie's father admitted just like that, that he hadn't supported her, he felt sorry, wanted to change that and meet up straight away. It was even stranger that Maddie was fine with meeting him even though he'd left her to fend for herself - except she had to meet Dr. Livingstone. So instead they could meet this evening. Have they already forgiven each other? Or has Maddie yearned for her father? Or is she rather reluctant, something that doesn't come across from the very start? Why does the father want to meet her now? Or did he let her fend for herself only emotionally? How old is the main character? Do they have a negative relationship - as his words suggest? Or a positive, as her words "Je t'aime," indicate? Characters' complicated emotions deepen plots, so these are questions I asked myself when I read the passage about their interaction. Maybe they have a good relationship, and almost none of the questions above are relevant - I guess I'll see!
Next, I loved the way you wrote. There's flow; it's easy to read and it's written through a fun perspective. There were grammar mistakes, words in the wrong places in sentences and places to edit. But there were also good characters, who weren't introduced too quickly or too slowly. I liked the relationship between Dr. Livingstone and Maddie and between Maddie and Melody.
Overall, there were both good and bad aspects to these two chapters, and it was nice to read them. I left some further advice on your chapters. Please keep in mind that I know your work is your own, and all suggestions are optional. You have to decide what you agree with - and what you don't.
