Chapter 8- Schmitty
Schmitty twists and turns on the bed as his foggy dream becomes visible with every passing minute. It played in a loop as if it was a broken record, unable to change direction but instead was forced to repeat the same tune over, and over, and over.
He stood in the center of an abandoned warehouse wearing a half-sleeved black button-up over black slacks, the only thing that stood out was his gray coat that reached his mid-thigh. The dripping of water from a broken pipe has his undivided attention, as he watches the water form at the edge before falling and making a "drip" sound when it hits the rusty silver broken concrete floor. His eyes wander over to the rest of the badly shaped building; the walls were torn down, graffiti glittering in the damp lightning, and inside the walls grew mole. The stench of dead vermin burned his nostrils, the smell so strong it threatened tears to spill, but he held them in.
He moves his attention back to the clanking, unable to pay much attention to anything else as the piercing in his head holds him captive. A new sound enters his surrounding, heels tapping along the floor, overpowering the ringing in his mind. He looks up at her cold blue eyes and shudders as she looks at him subjectively with no emotion.
She smirks at him. "Come on Schmitty-" her voice is as sweet as honey, music to his ears, "delve into something-" she pauses as she thinks about the right word, "nefarious."
Her words turn sour in his mouth as he repeats in a trance, "Nefarious." He tries to make out the figure, scanning her floral pattern pink cocktail gown, all the way down to her black pumps that had a bow in the center, when he reaches her eyes they have turned softer. He nods at her words as they finally make sense.
She smiles at him, a wicked smile, as she slowly lifts his bloody hand to his lips. "We can be together without anything holding us back," she coos in his ear, "you know how your conscious controls you and stops you, it won't anymore. All you have to do is- give in."
"Give in," he repeats, blinking a couple of times. "I want to-," he says as he licks some of the blood from his hands before he pulls her in and kisses her deeply. He pulls back and lays his head on hers, his dark eyes stare at hers; he smirks at her before taking a step back and slowly clapping.
At that moment; she could tell, the temptation had taken over him. He was the one she wanted. At that moment, he could tell there was no going back now and if there was, he wasn't going to.
His inner turmoil had shut off and all that was left was a Schmitty who encompassed everything he wasn't.
She moves away from him, allowing him to see the 3 people tied up on the floor, blindfolded. There was a couple who held hands in their elegant attire; the girl was dressed in a sparkling gray ball gown but wore no shoes, while the guy wore a white tuxedo and a bow tie, but no shoes. Then there was a third guy dressed in rags, torn and dirtier than the building itself. Except, he wore brand new shoes.
Schmitty looked up at Nikki's gleaming eyes and a smile formed on his lip. He could feel his heart pounding inside, vibrating his whole body, making him tingle throughout. He held out his hand and if it was possible, he could have seen the adrenalin and electricity of his nerves passing through as they connected.
He walks from under the shadows into the moonlight that shone on the 3 people. "Am I doing the honors?" He asks her, confidence making its way to the surface.
She bites her bottom lip at his words, trying to hide a smile as she nods at him. "Yes," is all she says.
"I love that," he tells her in admiration.
"They're to your choosing my love," she says as she gives him a back hug, running her fingernails up and down his body as she giggles into his ear. He feels a cold metal object in his hands and turns to look at a knife in his hands.
"I love that even more," he says as he tightens his hold on the wooden end of the knife. Weighing it between his hands, getting the feel of it. It was as if it had been carved and made especially for him.
"All that's left is- who will you kill first?" Nikki questions him.
"Is it really important who I kill first amongst these 3?" He asks, bewildered. They were going to die anyway, so why did it matter who died first.
"Of course amour, your first kill is always important."
"How so?"
"It marks the rest of your life," she says with a small twinkle in her eye.
"I see," Schmitty says as he walks around the three people in a circle, observing them with caution. His eyes darted to the couple who whimpered but clung to each other. He points the knife at them as he speaks, "there's something poetic about these two."
"Even in a situation like this, they cling to each other for safety. It is quite poetic," Nikki observes as well.
"Perhaps their soulmates?" Schmitty thinks out loud, tilting his head to the side as he examines them.
"Perhaps."
"I wonder-" Schmitty squints his eyes as he goes and removes the blindfold and takes out the gag from their mouths. "Baby- let me see a gun instead of this knife," Schmitty says as he outstretches the knife to her and she switches it for a gun.
"What are you planning, Schmitty?" Nikki asks him as she watches with amusement as he crouches down to meet the couple at eye level.
"Please, let us go-" the girl cries out.
"Shhh-" Shcmitty raises a hand to silence her, "I have a question," he tells her. "For both of you," he signals between them.
The guy looks like a deer caught in a headlight, filled with horror, as he asks, "what is it?"
"Since I'm in a generous mood, I decided to let one of you go," Shcmitty tells them. The young couple looks at each other with pure terror, wondering who it would be. Both afraid of the answer. "However, here's the twist. At the count of three, I want you both to yell your response on who I should kill."
"And if we don't?" the guy asks him, bravely.
"Then you both die," Schmitty responds in a duh tone with a shrug of his shoulders. "It's really simple."
"1," Schmitty raises a finger. The couple looks at each other wondering who each would pick.
"2," Schmitty says. Both wanted to survive this but they knew that wasn't a choice.
"3," he finishes.
"Her."
"Me."
Schmitty laughs a full-hearted laugh as he looks at the amusing couple. The girl turns to the guy with disbelief written on her face. "Erik, how?" her mouth goes slack at the thought. He was willing to sacrifice her for himself while she was willing to die for him.
Nikki places a hand on Schmitty's shoulders. "Now I know what you were planning. You're so twisted-" Nikki squeezes his shoulder, "I love it,"
"I guess they weren't soulmates after all. How sad. I was rooting for you crazy kids. Honest, I was," He tells them as he crouches down and places the gag back in their mouth, and blindfolds them again. "I will however let the girl die faster. I admire her loyalty." They respond in whimpers.
He stands up and faces Nikki, making sure to dust off his hands. She switches the gun back to the knife. "I made my decision on who to kill first," he tells her as he examines the young couple.
Nikki claps her hands, "I wonder who it's going to be."
He smiles at her, "Don't worry. You're about to find out. Anticipation is the key to anything." He gives her a wink.
"I love you," she breathes out as she gives him a look of pure adoration. He grins at her before responding.
"I love you too, baby."
He closes his eyes and walks up to them, his target already on his mind. Without hesitation, the knife makes an impact on the person's stomach. A warm gooey substance pools onto his cold hands. His laugh resonates through the building mixing with the grunts as he sticks the knife into the guy several more times until he feels the body lie limb in his arms. He smiles at this and opens his eyes to see. Taking off the blindfold of his victim, he sees the lifeless brown eyes of the person whose life he just took. Schmitty's own eyes were void of everything and anything, all he could see were those brown eyes.
"Nooooo", Schmitty wakes up with a loud gasp, searching for air as his scream fills the almost empty room. With a frantic look on his face, he searches his silver silk bed sheets and body for blood. He sighs in relief when he finds nothing. His eyes look around the unfamiliar room, trying to remember where he was. His mind is a bit hazy but he can make out the small cottage they were in. His eyes wander over it, trying to remember why he was here.
"Schmitty, are you okay?" Nikki says, standing by the doorway. She wears black shorts, a silver crop top that was open from her cleavage, a black leather jacket, and her favorite black pumps. She was wearing a gold chain around her jet black hair that came down in waves, pinned down. Gold bracelets hung on both of her arms. Her gray eyes sparkled along with the gold chain and bracelets from the sunlight. He sighs in relief to see her.
"I-" he takes a deep breath, "just had a nightmare," he tells her.
Nikki raises an eyebrow and cautiously speaks, "let me go get you some water and you can tell me about this nightmare, sound good?"
"Yeah," Schmitty responds. As soon as Nikki disappears, he stands up. His feet wobble as he walks towards a small cabinet. He gets on his knees and opens it, searching for anything, the water was taking too long. He sees a bottle of Whiskey and drinks from it. He shakes his head as the ringing in his head interrupts his questions about his nightmare.
"Isn't it too early for whiskey, love?" Nikki asks from behind him with a glass of water in her hands.
"After the dream I had, I could use a couple of drinks," Schmitty responds.
Nikki goes and outstretches the glass of water for him and asks, "What was your dream about?"
"Thanks," Schmitty tells her, accepting the glass of water and drinking it. "I don't remember the exact details if I'm being honest. I just remember blood and," he gives a faraway look, "you?" he tells her.
"I was in your dreams?"
"I think it was you. I can't recall the details very well but it left a bad feeling in my stomach," he tells her. Schmitty pours her a glass of whiskey and hands it to her.
"Thank you, but I'm kind of worried. You've been having a few nightmares lately," Nikki tells him.
"Oh- that's nothing to worry about. I can handle them. Besides," Schmitty takes her glass and sets it on the table as he grabs her hands in his, "that's not important today because I have a very important evening plan for us tonight," he says as he starts swaying her side to side. His thoughts were no longer concerned with the dream, it was as it never happened.
"What kind of plans?" Nikki giggles as she moves in Schmitty's arms, looking into his eyes.
"I brought you to the countryside for a reason baby," he tells her and sweeps her hair back, looking into her eyes. "Wait, are you wearing gray contacts?" he asks her.
Nikki smiles, "they're more of a hazel color," she tells him. "Wait a minute," she gives him a serious look, "don't distract me and tell me the plans," she says.
"Think about why I would bring you to the countryside. Why do you like it so much," he tells her.
"It's my favorite place for-" she pauses, her eyes widening as she clicks the puzzle together, and jumps up with joy as she asks, "are we going to play one of my favorite games?"
"Yes, we are, after a night in the town."
"A night out in the town?" Nikki asks incredulously, sitting down on the bed.
"Yes- I was thinking we could go out to eat, maybe a nightclub, and then we would end the night back here," he tells her as he sits beside her.
"That sounds wonderful love."
"What's more wonderful is that the guys haven't called us all night." He shifts the conversation as he pounders the restfulness they've had from everyone.
"Or morning."
"Morning? Why, what time is it now?" Schmitty asks, full of confusion.
"It's 3 in the afternoon," Nikki says after a pensive moment.
"3 in the afternoon? How did I sleep so much?"
"We went to sleep at around 3 in the morning. So it makes sense for you to sleep until right now."
Schmitty chuckles at her as he runs smooth circles on her shoulder, "Alright. Should we call them then? Make sure everything is under control?"
"They're big boys, they can take care of themselves."
"So you're telling me you're not worried they might have burned down the hotel?"
Nikki's face falls at his words as she reaches for her phone on the bedside table and starts pressing Callum's number quickly, putting it on speakerphone. "Come on Callum- pick up- pick up- pick up," Nikki says as the phone starts ringing, agitated.
"Yo-yo-yo- it's your boy Callum Mitchels, I ain't here right now but hit me up later. Unless you want me to call you back then leave your number and I will. Winky face. Bye," the voicemail comes through, making Nikki roll her eyes at it.
"How is he a lawyer?" Schmitty asks incredulously.
"What I can't believe is the fact that he gets clients with these voicemails," Nikki adds.
"Try Aaron, you know he's the responsible one out of all 3 of them- or Quin, he's always on his phone."
"Yeah, but I wanted to annoy Callum as he annoys us. Calling at all hours of the day," she says when her phone starts ringing with the collar Id, Callum, blinking on the center screen. Nikki clicks the answer button to the facetime, where Callum's chin moving around the screen pops-up.
"Callum, hold the phone away from your face," Schmitty tells him.
"Oh, yeah," Callum says and does as told, giving them a world winning smile as he waves at them when he can see them properly.
"Hello," Nikki answers sweetly. "This is Nikki, how can I help you."
"Hey! I called to see how you guys are doing?" Callum starts the conversation as if he was the one who had called first.
"We're doing fine. How is my hotel, Callum?" Nikki asks.
"You should ask how they are too, Nikki-" Schmitty tells her. "Better yet, I'll do it. How are you guys doing Callum?"
"We're alright. We get a little bored from time to time. It feels like forever since you guys left. When are you guys coming back?" Callum whines at them.
"We haven't even been gone 3 days," Schmitty answers.
"A week away from you guys just isn't enough," Nikki whispers to the side in a bored tone.
"Awww Nikki, we know you miss us too."
"Whatever. So how is my building? Please tell me it's still standing in one piece," Nikki tells him.
"You'll be happy to know that it is," Callum replies, not meeting her gaze.
"I don't believe you," Nikki says and narrows her eyes at him, "show me around."
Callum rolls his eyes but does what he's told. "See, that's my bed, and that my door, and this is my room. So ergo- the building is still standing because I still have a room and if the building wasn't standing then I wouldn't have a room," he explains.
"Okay- Callum" Nikki holds out her hand in a stopping motion, "I get it. My building is still safe. Now that I know it is, I can leave this conversation-" Nikki tells him with a faltering smile. "Bye Callum," she says and hands the phone over to Schmitty, and walks out of the room.
Callum gets closer to the phone, his mouth being the only thing on the screen as she whispers, "Did she leave?"
"Yes Callum, she's gone," Schmitty responds as he adjusts himself on the bed.
"Okay-" Callum says and scoots away from the phone, "great because I don't think she'll like to hear the fact that her building almost burned down."
Schmitty gives him a deadpan look, "how?"
"I don't know what to tell you, man. One second me and Quin were trying to bake us some pancakes and the next thing we know, the kitchen is on fire, then the curtains, then the cabinets- you get the point."
"Mmhh. Well, as long as everyone is okay and you replace everything to the way it was before. I think it's safe to assume she won't notice."
"Yeah, we did. We also got this one guy to cover this hole Aaron did."
"Aaron did what?" Schmitty says, raising his voice a bit.
"Shh, keep it down," Callum tells him. "It's cool though. Something about one of his experiments going wrong, mixing wrong chemicals, blah-blah-blah-," Callum says as he does a talking gesture with his hand, "but as I said. It's all cool now."
Schmitty places a hand on his temples, "okay- well. That's good enough. Let's keep it between us."
"Thanks, Schmitty. You're the real MVP."
"No problem Callum."
"You wouldn't perhaps like to indulge me in what you were promising Callum, would you love?" Nikki asks from the doorway, making Schmitty jump and bounce the phone around in his hand, startled by her. He finally regains his composure and looks up at Nikki, who waits for the answer, with a guilty smile.
"Nothing baby," he tells her, nonchalantly.
Nikki stares at him with a blank expression to which he gives her a wide grin. "Ohh, you're getting better at this lying thing," she tells him with a pointed look.
"I am?" Schmitty says with a bright smile.
"Yes, but we don't lie to each other," Nikki reprimands.
"No we don't, but this is something I can't tell. You know I tell you the important things."
"Just like I do," Nikki says as she approaches him in a slow stride. "Alright- Callum?" she turns her attention to the screen.
"Hmm," Callum muffles through a mouthful of cookies.
"Do you want to tell me anything?"
"Mmmm," Callum muffles as he shakes his head no.
"Alright then. Just so you know, if it has something to do with my building- I will find out," she says with a flip of her hair and exits the room again.
Schmitty runs a hand over his face and turns his attention toward Callum who is gulping down on a gallon of milk. "Callum," Schmitty yells, causing Callum to drop the gallon and milk to spill.
"Ohh man, now I gotta find a way to clean this up."
"Can I suggest a mop?" Schmitty says in fits of laughter.
"Nawww, I need something better than a mop. What is a mop going to do? Clean this?"
"Yeah," Schmitty tells him in a duh tone.
Callum squints his eyes in confusion, "Hmm- that seems impossible. Naww, I'm just gonna see how much I gotta pay Quin to clean."
"You do know we also have a maid who cleans up, for free," Schmitty tells him as he starts thinking, "In fact, I've seen Quin call her up sometimes, to clean messes you've made- I assume."
Callum looks at Schmitty with an offended face, "What? We've had a maid that cleans for us this whole time? Man, Quin's been conning me out of money since- forever."
"Well Callum, he is a bright guy."
"I'm bright too. I'm a lawyer, what is he- a cadet? That's weak yo."
Schmitty chuckles, "Alright Callum, I gotta go."
"Gatta plan Nikki's special evening?"
"Yup," Schmitty admits with a guilty grin, only making Callum chuckle.
"Oh- you should try this one restaurant called Marvellos Chan'te. I hear it's a nice and classy restaurant. Very pricey. I'm sure Nikki would love it. I'll send you the number," Callum tells him.
"Thanks, man. I'll speak to you later then," Schmitty says as he ends the conversation. Within seconds the phone beeps, signaling a new message. Schmitty opens it and looks at the number Callum had sent, contemplating if it was a good idea to trust him with something this important, but ultimately gives in and clicks on it.
"Hello, this is Mavel from Marvellos Chan'te. How can I help you?" a lady's voice comes through the phone, she had a thick french accent.
"Hi, I'd like to make a reservation for 9 PM?"
"I'm sorry sir, we are currently booked," Mavel says.
"Are you sure, I'd check again? The reservation would be made under Hawthorn," he tells her with a smirk on his face. The only reason he planned things last minute was because he knew he would get away from it. No one could refuse the Hawthorns.
He hears a coughing fit before Mavels voice sounds through again, "Why Mr. Hawthorn- I see right here that we are available for a reservation at 9 PM tonight."
"I thought you might, Mavel," he says, "thank you, you've been a doll." He ends the conversation and settles back into bed, "well- I'll I can do now wait" he tells himself and closes his eyes.
This time, it was the same dream but it felt so much sweeter.

So in my dream, that was supposed to happen. This bad guy wanted to merge with the smartest person. There was a group of us and we were running away. At last, he caught us and in order to determine who he was going to merge with. He gave us a math test.
