Chapter 8
It's been ten minutes since Jaemin brought you to his car and left you for a while because he needed to buy something. He crossed the road to the convenience store to buy coffee for you so you could get rid out of the alcohol in your system. He also bought hangover medicine for you because a massive headache would surely be waiting to punish you tomorrow.
Minutes later, Jaemin left the convenience store with his purchases in a paper bag. He crossed the road and saw you leaning on the headrest with your eyes closed. He was still angry about earlier and he was disappointed he wasn't able to punch Seon-ok.
He carefully opened the door of his car, trying not to wake you up but when you heard the door open, your eyes fluttered opened.
"How are you feeling?" he asked and sat beside you. He handed you the paper bag and you dizzily rummaged through the contents.
"Still a little dizzy," you replied.
"Drink that coffee, it will help sober you up."
"Thank you, Jaemin."
You smiled at him but he only rolled his eyes at you. You didn't mind as you opened the cap of the iced coffee and put the lid between your lips. The bitter taste was strong but you didn't complain. After drinking five shots of soju bomb, the black coffee was nothing to you.
"Stay away from that man from now on," Jaemin said, breaking the silence.
You put the cold coffee on your cheek. "We're not even close in the first place. I'm really shocked that he would go to such extent."
"I hope he get expelled."
"I hope so, too. But that would be cruel since he's a graduating student."
"Who cares? People like him don't deserve a future," Jaemin said through gritted teeth and he gripped the steering wheel tightly. He distracted himself by looking at the peaceful surrounding outside, nighttime made the city serene.
"I know that. I'm just as angry as you are. But, I'm also thankful that a lot of people went for my rescue. I should thank Doyoung, too."
"Save that for tomorrow, that is if you can stand up when you have a massive hangover."
"Holy shit, I forgot the glorious aftermath of alcohol," you said sarcastically.
"Have you been drinking before?" Jaemin asked.
You shook your head but you regretted it right away because it made you nauseous. "No... I only tasted it back when I was still on our hometown. Everyone was so excited to be an adult so they could drink. I was curious what alcohol tastes like so I took a few sip.
Jaemin noticed how you casually said 'our hometown' but chose not to make a fuss about it.
He realized that you never really stayed the same. There were quite a few changes about you that he missed, which made him oddly sad. He imagined you when you celebrated your legal age, surrounded by your friends back in your hometown. Everybody was drinking alcohol and you took a sip. He imagined how your face twisted in disgust when the bitter taste spread within your mouth.
He wished he was there to witness you during your milestones as you aged.
"Jaemin? What are you staring at?" you asked when you noticed him spacing out while looking at your face.
Jaemin woke up from his daze and spoke, "Tell me about your friend."
"Which friend?" you asked. You were thinking of Giselle and Haechan because they were the ones you consider your friend as of now. The others still remain as an acquaintance.
"The one you call Nana. You said I look like him. Why are you desperately looking for him?"
She's drunk, she won't remember, he thought to himself. And drunk people always tell the truth.
"He's my childhood friend," you began and smiled as you remember the boy. "Nana is really sweet and very gentle. He doesn't like it when I get sad so he does everything in his power to cheer me up. He knows about my likes and dislikes. He tries to protect me when I'm scared, educate me when I'm wrong, and most importantly, he doesn't get angry with me. I even told myself when I was young that if I'm going to marry someone, I should marry a guy like Nana," a smile spread across your lips as you reminisced your memories together.
Beside you, Jaemin was doing the same thing. He was looking at you with so much longing. He missed you, more than you missed him. You were the last piece of happiness he had.
"But nine years ago, he left without saying goodbye to me. Imagine how heartbroken I was. The only friend I treasure the most was gone. I thought my memories with him were just a dream but when I saw our initials on the cherry blossom tree, I remembered everything. I miss him so much, I miss him that it physically hurts me to think about him," your voice cracked as tears cascaded down your face.
You were confused if it was the alcohol that was making you emotional or if it's because he was the first person you could tell Nana about. Not knowing that you were actually talking to the person you had been looking for.
"It's crazy to think that you're not Nana. I know I'm stubborn, but I really believe you're him. You can hate me but I will still believe you're Nana. I mean, it's an odd coincidence that you're both Na Jaemin and you looked a lot like him," you turned your head to him and you saw him leaning close to you, your faces closer than usual.
"But wherever he is now, I hope he will still remain kind and gentle, a sweet young boy from my childhood. I'm not ashamed to say that up until now, he's still my ideal type. He treated me the way I should be treated, and that's why I will forever treasure him."
Jaemin's eyes scanned your face and all he could see was sincerity and sadness. His heart broke knowing that he wasn't the sweet Nana you used to know.
He was forced to be the Na Jaemin that he was now, and he doubt that he could still go back to the way he was. Adversities honed him into a person he was now, and he wasn't quite proud of what he had become.
"If Nana is a gentle kind of person, why would you still want to he friends with me?" he asked, referring to your answer earlier.
"Because I believe you're Nana."
"What if I'm not him."
You gave him a soft smile as you looked intently into his face, memorizing every curve and crevice. "Because I know there's more to you underneath that cold facade."
He wasn't able to give an answer right away so you took the chance to drink more of the coffee. He was contemplating whether it was a good idea, but the fact that it tempted him to accept your friendship was something that surprised him.
I'm here to start anew, he told himself. My family has nothing to do with this.
"I'll be your friend then," he answered, something you didn't expect.
"Are you for real?"
"You're the one who wanted to be friends with me. I'm just giving you a chance."
"I wasn't expecting you'd agree though."
"Fine, then don't."
"No, you can't take it back," you said and grinned foolishly at him. This time, he didn't fight the smile that graced his lips. He might not want to admit it, but he still had a soft spot for you.
After all, you're drunk and you won't remember.
He was wrong.
Thanks to the hangover medicine Jaemin bought for you last night, you weren't in as much pain when you woke up in the morning.
"What the hell happened? Everyone was making a fuss about what happened to your party last night. I don't know the whole story because there are so many versions of the truth. And to top it all," Giselle took a deep, dramatic breath before continuing. "Na freaking Jaemin brought you home!"
You were dazed the whole time but when you heard Jaemin's name, chills instantly run through your blood.
"It wasn't a dream..." you whispered.
"What?"
"It wasn't a dream!" you exclaimed and tackled Giselle into a hug only to regret it a second later because your head throbbed in pain.
You told everything to Giselle during breakfast and she surely provided you with the best reactions.
"That fucker, he dared touch someone who's drunk. Men like him disgust me," Giselle said angrily.
Now that you're sober, you felt a surge of anger twice the intensity. He wouldn't have a future if he was expelled? Fuck that. Jaemin was right, people like didn't deserve a future especially when they act worse than animals. Touching someone who's clearly not sober to give consent, that's beyond disgusting.
After you drank the medicine, you got ready to go to school. Your mind was filled of Jaemin's conversation last night. You purposely omitted that part to Giselle because you wanted the moment all to yourself.
The last thing you remembered was his smile. The smile you had been used to see when you were young. How couldn't he be Nana if everything about him screamed that he was? He wasn't sweet and gentle anymore, but he's still kind. He looked after you when you were drunk, talked to you, even offered to be friends with you.
Whether he's Nana or not, would it still matter?
When you arrived at the campus, you saw Chenle and Jisung sitting on a bench, soaking under the sun, taking advantage of the good weather. You walked towards them and they both looked surprised when they saw you.
"Good morning," you greeted them and sat across Jisung whose hand was wrapped in a bandage.
"Good morning," they both greeted back.
"How are you feeling?" Jisung asked when he was clearly the one who was hurt, but then again, what happened to you wasn't a joke, wasn't something you could shrug your shoulders to.
"I have a massive headache and the urge to cut someone's dick and feed it off to piranhas," you answered. They were both shocked with what you said but they laughed.
"So you remember what happened last night?" Chenle asked.
"Vividly."
"Did Jaemin take you home?" He asked. "Nobody followed you when he dragged you outside."
"Yes, he took me home. My roommate saw him," you answered. You turned to Jisung. "I'm sorry for what happened to you last night."
He waved his hand and shook his head. "No, don't apologize. I'm okay, besides, you're not the one who's supposed to apologize. It's him."
He motioned his head behind your back and you turned around. Your blood boiled and your hands balled into fist the moment you saw Seon-ok walking towards you.
He was smiling at you as if he didn't feel you up last night.
"Good morning, guys," he said casually and waved at you but nobody responded. The smile fell off of his ugly face. "I said good morning, don't you have any manners?"
"You're talking about manners when you had the audacity to touch someone without their consent," you spat. Your voice was so loud that you caught the attention of the nearby students.
Seon-ok's forehead creased. "What are you talking about? Why would I do that? You were just drunk last night, (Name). I would have forgiven you for slapping me when I did nothing wrong and here you are all sober but still forcing that story."
"You dare invalidate my story as if you were innocent. You're disgusting. I know I'm telling the truth so I won't back down no matter what you do."
You two were glaring at each other now. You were shaking in anger and Seon-ok only laughed at you. He had no conscience at all.
"If I were you, I would stop that act," Chenle stood up between the two of you. "Everybody is so invested with the situation and nobody would believe that you're innocent. It seems like your bad reputation among the students would drag you to your own downfall. That's what you get for constantly bullying and harassing somebody."
Seon-ok's eye twitch and he took a menacing step towards you and Chenle when somebody grabbed his collar from behind and threw him to the ground. He landed pathetically on his ass and looked for the culprit. He craned his neck up and saw a tall figure with a bandage around his hand.
It was Jisung.
"Oh sorry, did you trip?" Jisung asked sarcastically. "How does it feel being thrown off into the ground?"
A crowd was starting to gather around you now. You nudged Chenle and motioned at the crowd forming. He understood what you meant so he dragged Jisung away from the crowd and walked after you.
As you walk away, you heard Seon-ok's pathetic threats and screams which was soon silenced by Doyoung's arrival.
"Nice teamwork," you commented and the three of you laughed.
Meanwhile, Jaemin was surprisingly in his best mood ever since he arrived in this city, and without the influence of coffee. He felt so light and free and he even smiled at Jeno when they were eating breakfast together.
"You're so weird, what's wrong with you?" Jeno asked.
"Nothing," Jaemin answered but he couldn't remove the smile on his face.
"What happened last night? You and (Name) left and you went home late. Are you sure you brought her home?"
"I did! I would never do something to her like what that bastard of a senior," he said and he instantly regretted bringing that up because he suddenly had the urge to punch someone's face. He would be doomed if he punched Jeno though. "I think... I think I made a mistake."
"You fucker I thought you didn't—"
"Not like that, you dumbass!"
Jaemin told him the conversation between you two last night. He didn't want to share it but he it was going to drive him crazy if he didn't let it out of his chest. Besides, he trusted Jeno the most.
"I told you, resisting her is useless," Jeno said and gave Jaemin an I-told-you-so look.
Jaemin clicked his tongue in annoyance. "Let's go, we're going to be late."
On their way to school, Jaemin bought a cup of iced Americano though he didn't feel like drinking it. He didn't need to because he was feeling strangely energetic. When they arrived, people were looking at them as usual, but there was something different today.
"What are they staring at?" he asked Jeno.
"Why are you asking me? We got here together how will I know."
His question was answered when Mark arrived.
"Jaemin! Jeno!" he called. The two turned around and Mark jogged towards them, his hand handing them his phone. Jaemin grabbed it and saw what Mark wanted them to see.
There was a picture of Seon-ok lying on the ground, with you, Chenle, and Jisung looking down on him. There was a caption above the picture.
The freshmen this school year are so scary.
Jaemin's forehead creased then opened the comment section. "What did that bastard do to her again?" he asked in a dangerous tone.
"Seon-ok deserved it. I saw and heard everything."
"He literally got his karma. Remember, he allegedly touched (Name) while she was drunk? Only evil people with no conscience do that."
"Lol Seon-ok is so pathetic."
Every comment was against Seon-ok so it calmed Jaemin a bit, however, there was one comment from an anonymous person that made him angrier.
"That bitch, (Name), was just probably lying to gain everyone's attention. She was featured once in an article and now she wanted more. How pathetic."
Beside him, Jeno read the same comment. "What the hell?"
"Apparently, there are a lot of posts about the incident last night and everyone was speculating about it," Mark told them.
"Let them act like a detective. We should focus more on getting that asshole pay for his disgusting acts. If it's not possible for him to get kicked out then I'll make him suffer."
Jaemin stormed away, leaving Jeno and Mark puzzled. Mark was confused, but Jeno had an idea why Jaemin acted that way.
Time flew by so fast that it was already time for your Science subject. You trudged your way to the laboratory, ignoring the whispers of the students when you passed by. When you got there, there were only a few students and most of them were slumped on the table, catching on some sleep because they had a blast last night.
There was only one person in your table and like the others, he was also sleeping with his head resting on his arms, listening to jazz music with his airpods. You carefully walked to your table and sat across him. He didn't move so you assumed that he didn't notice you.
You stared at his sleeping form, unable to suppress the smile in your lips. This man talked to you last night and that was the most transparent he had been to you. He opened his eyes and lifted his head up, caught you smiling like an idiot. Your eyes locked and for a second, he wanted to greet you but then again, you were drunk last night so he thought you didn't remember what you talked about.
"Hey," you called. "Aren't you going to greet your friend?"
His eyes widened and his head snapped at you. "What did you say?"
"What? Do you usually treat your friends like a stranger? I don't see you ignoring Jeno though."
He wanted to be swallowed by the ground, suddenly feeling embarrassed that he let his guard down. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"I might be drunk but my mind is clear. I remembered all the words you said. Do you want me to say it out loud?"
Jaemin's face flushed and you smiled, feeling victorious. "Don't say a word, (Name)."
There was something about the way he called your name that made your heart lurch. Was it because he rarely calls your name? Or was it because of his embarrassed expression? You couldn't exactly tell. But you mustered up a smile and looked at him.
"You can never get rid of me, so I suggest you accept your fate now."
Those were the last words you uttered before your classmates came filing in, your labmates, joining the table.
