Chapter 3

"Nana! Look at my flower crown! Me and my classmates made it!" Your four-year-old self ran towards Jaemin who was sitting under the cherry blossom tree with his eyes closed. The two of you didn't belong in the same class that's why you had other friends aside from him. When you reached his spot, you shook his shoulder, forcing him to open his eyes. Even when you interrupted his nap, he still didn't get angry with you.

"What is it?"

"Look at my flower crown!" You twirled around to show off your flower crown made up of pretty flowers of varying colors. Of course, it was beautiful but knowing Jaemin's nature, he decided to tease you.

"No, it's not. It's ugly," he said with a straight face. You instantly stopped acting cute when you heard his answer. Jaemin was one to shower you with compliments so hearing him disagree made your eyes water. In an instant, your tears cascaded down your plump cheeks and you sobbed.

He was flustered when he saw you crying so he got up to his feet to comfort you. Teasing you was a bad idea after all.

"I hate you!" you cried.

"No, I'm sorry. I was just teasing you. You look pretty and your flower crown is pretty. It suits you well."

"Then why did you say it's ugly?!"

"I was just teasing you, I'm sorry. I won't do it again."

"I still hate you, Nana..."

"If I buy you marshmallows, will you not hate me?"

Nana was smart enough to bribe a fatass like you who was ready to trade anything for food.

"Chocolate, too," you added.

"Okay, okay, marshmallows and chocolates and then we're good again."

"Thank you Nana! You're the best!"

Nana only smiled, pretending that you just didn't tell him you hate him ten seconds ago. The two of you walked together to the store to buy marshmallow and chocolate.

"Damn it, (Name)! Please get out of my head," he silently begged as he buried his face on the soft pillow. It was another sleepless night for him and his head was throbbing in pain as usual, but it became more unbearable because he couldn't get you out of his mind.

His plan hadn't even started yet you could potentially destroy it.

All he ever wanted was to become a normal Na Jaemin.  Not Nana, not a son of some prominent public figure.

His phone vibrated on the smooth surface of his dark oak wood bedside table. With a grunt, he reached for it and looked at the caller ID. It was his best friend from South Korea, Lee Jeno.

Lee Jeno and Na Jaemin were classmates since Jaemin moved in to South Korea. Jeno had a patient of a saint to become Jaemin's friend and endure the sudden shifts of his personality. From being extremely talkative to not talking at all, there's no in between. He would just stand there with his trademark eye smile.

Lee Jeno resembled a samoyed, according to Jaemin. But despite his gentle face, he's buff and very manly.

"What is it, Zeno Lee?" Jaemin asked as he lazily put the phone on his ear.

"Good morning to you, too." He heard a chuckle from the other line.

"What do you want?"

"I prepared a huge surprise for you!"

Jaemin clicked his tongue. "That better be a good one. I have an orientation today at my new school."

"You'll thank me forever for this surprise, trust me. What time are you going to be in your school?"

"I should be there at 10 AM, it was written on the email."

"You should get going then. Tell me when the orientation is over so I can tell you about the surprise. Bye!"

"Bye!"

Jaemin hung up and forcefully dragged his body to the shower to wake up his senses before eating his breakfast and consuming two mugs of black coffee consecutively. It was bitter as expected but to him, it tasted like ambrosia.

Meanwhile, you and Giselle overslept and now you're scrambling to get ready, chasing after the clock. Good thing, you already prepared the clothes you were going to wear for the orientation. You got dressed in a black button down polo shirt and white flared white pants. Both you and Giselle decided to go for a sophisticated concept for today's event.

Talking until midnight was absolutely a bad idea but you didn't regret a thing because you enjoyed the conversation.

Giselle emerged from the bathroom wearing a muted pink skirt and white frilly blouse. You were putting on a light and fresh makeup while she was drying her hair.

"Are you nervous? 'Cause I am. The slacking days are over, we're closer to reality now," Giselle said beside you.

"I am actually nervous. I don't know what kind of people we will meet at NeoU, but let's just have a good time," you admitted.

You suddenly felt the pressure of being an adult and a college student, a pressure of being successful with your career. But you decided to stress about that later, for now, you'd enjoy whatever you encounter, at least for now.

"I heard there are plenty of good-looking people there at NeoU," Giselle told you.

You're not going to lie, you were one to get attracted to good-looking people from time to time. It was in human nature after all to like something or someone that was visually pleasing.

"And we'll be added to that list," you said confidently. Of course, it was meant as a joke but Giselle was gorgeous and so were you. It's not bad to boost your self-esteem sometimes. You once knew a friend named Lucas who was so in love with himself and you thought he didn't need someone to give him love because he loved himself more than anybody could.

"Shoot! We only have ten minutes before the orientation starts!" Giselle exclaimed.

You scrambled again to the door, not bothering to fix the mess you left and locked the door of your dorm room, sprinting to NeoU.

When you got there, both of you were out of breath. Students kept coming and filing in inside the huge university, entering the tall black gates where a black-haired man stood, wearing a black sweater and grey pants, handing pamphlets and school map to the newcomers.

"Good morning, welcome to Neo University! My name is Kim Doyoung and I am the Vice President of the Student Council. Here is the school map that you can use for the school tour and a pamphlet containing all the relevant information regarding our school. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me after the orientation. Just walk straight ahead and you'll find the auditorium!" Doyoung explained as he handed the map and pamphlet to you and Giselle.

"Thank you!" you told him.

"You're welcome!" he replied and smiled.

His gummy smile is so adorable, you thought. He resembled a bunny.

You and Giselle started walking ahead when you heard Doyoung's voice reprimand someone. You turned around and saw him scolding a silver-haired guy who only looked pointedly at him as if speaking to Doyoung was a waste of his time.

It was Na Jaemin wearing his usual bored look. You were not surprised to see him at NeoU knowing that this was the most prestigious school in the city but you didn't expect to see him today. Most importantly, you didn't expect to see him to get scolded by the Student Council Vice President.

Does he ever smile? you asked yourself.

"I'm sorry but you are not allowed to enter NeoU if you have a dyed hair. You have to dye it back into your natural hair color," Doyoung said in his authoritative voice.

You saw Jaemin smirked. "Do you want me to go to a salon right now and miss the orientation?" he asked sarcastically.

They were garnering attention and the more Doyoung nagged Jaemin, the more impatient the other students got.

"That's not what I meant!" Doyoung said defensively. "I meant when the semester begins!"

"And the beginning of the semester is not today, am I right?" Jaemins asked. "I am well-aware of the school rules, I don't need to read the entire student handbook and listen to your lecture. Now if you excuse me, I will go now before all the seats are taken."

You were surprised at how well Jaemin handled the situation without raising his voice, but you were also shocked that he talked back to a senior. Not that he was wrong though.

Jaemin walked towards your direction and when he looked ahead, he caught you staring at him. You didn't bother looking away, you were waiting to see his reaction.

Would he recognize me this time?

You got nothing, something you already expected. Nine years did a lot to his memory. Or maybe it meant nothing to him.

He passed by you as if you were invisible. The person who always welcomed you with sweet smiles and warm hugs became cold and lifeless. Is he trying a concept? you thought. Usually in dramas, the handsome guy was always cold. Maybe that was the image he was going for.

"(Name)!" Giselle called you. "The orientation is going to begin! Let's go!"

You ran towards Giselle, forcing yourself to get rid off Na Jaemin inside your head.

The orientation dragged on for three hours, introducing the members of the faculty, the courses being offered, the facilities found within the campus, the grading system, and the school regulations. You tried to listen and digest the words that the lecturer was saying but you could feel yourself dozing off. Beside you, Giselle was already snoozing.

You distracted yourself by looking around and instantly caught a glimpse of silver hair. He effortlessly stood out among the sea of people and you knew that you weren't the only one who noticed him because you saw other people gawking at him.

He was sitting in the middle of the room and it seemed like there was a spotlight pointed at him because all eyes were on him instead of the lecturer talking in front.

You couldn't blame them, he was gorgeous as hell. Puberty did him great.

Instead of listening to the lecturer, you decided to stare at him instead, shooting holes at the back of his head. Maybe if you stared at him long enough, you would know what's going on inside his head.

Or maybe you should give up, talking to him was pointless. You suddenly regret going to the cherry blossom tree. If you didn't go there and saw both your initials engraved on the old tree, you wouldn't remember him.

The orientation ended and you woke up Giselle who was leaning on your shoulder.

"Giselle! Wake up," you gently shook her shoulders. She woke up with her eyes half-opened and hair disheveled. You giggled at her as she straightened her clothes and you tamed her hair.

"It's over already? That didn't take long," she said.

"Yeah, you only listened for fifteen minutes and slept through the rest."

Giselle only shrugged her shoulder and stood up to walk beside you. The two of you decided to roam around the school first and buy the necessary books for your course subjects. Your eyes unconsciously scanned the auditorium, looking for the gorgeous silver-haired man but he was gone. He was already inside his expensive car, garnering unnecessary attention towards him. He was going to Starbuxkcs for his third cup of poisoned drink called coffee.

While driving, Jaemin dialed Jeno's number who instantly answered the call.

"Hello, it's Jeno Lee!"

"I know, I'm not stupid. The orientation is over, tell me what the hell did you prepare for me. What reaction would you to receive? Should I jump? Should I cry?"

"Roll over and stick your tongue out like a dog."

"Never mind that surprise. I don't want it." Jaemin rolled his eyes and he heard a chuckle from the other line.

"I will send you the address. Just say your name and the person waiting for you knows what they have to do."

Jeno ended the call and Jaemin received a text message containing the address. Even though he hadn't been in the city for too long, he immediately learned every nook and cranny of the city.

Jaemin arrived at a fine dining restaurant with an aristocratic atmosphere. He parked his car and entered the luxurious restaurant. Smell of mouth-watering food linger in the air. The interior and lights made it appear as if you were eating in a sophisticated restaurant from the 80s. A waiter wearing a white button down shirt and red bowtie walked towards him and gave him a polite bow.

"Good day, Sir. What can I get you?" he asked.

"I'm Na Jaemin, someone made a reservation for me."

The waiter scanned the log book and immediately found Jaemin's name.

"Follow me, Sir."

They climbed to the second floor where more seats were available. They turned to a hallway and found series of doors where the VIP rooms were. The waiter stopped in front of a wooden door and knocked first before opening the door, announcing Jaemin's arrival.

"Mr. Na Jaemin is here," he announced. They only heard a grunt in response and the waiter motioned Jaemin to get inside.

Jaemin was hesitant because Jeno didn't tell him that he will meet somebody as a surprise.

Not a blind date, please, he thought to himself. He would surely kill Jeno if he set him up again. The last thing he needed was to hook up with somebody. Taking a brave step, he entered the VIP room.

The first thing he noticed was the table full of his favorite dishes which you could easily tell that were cooked by professional chefs. The cost could cover your allowance for an entire year.

Then, his eyes landed on the man sitting alone while covering his face. He didn't have to guess who it was. He had known him for nine years.

"Lee Jeno!" he exclaimed and immediately went in for a hug. With Jeno, he could be energetic without the influence of caffeine. They often joke that they were each others' soulmate which wasn't hard to believe.

"Surprise!"

"What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be in South Korea?" Jaemin asked, still couldn't believe that his best friend was in a foreign city with him.

"What am I supposed to do there without you?" Jeno confessed, but in a brotherly way. "We're stuck together, remember? Our intestines our practically tied to each other."

Jaemin was overwhelmed with happiness. Thoughts of seeing you at the orientation was gone. If he ever wanted to bring something from his past, it was Jeno. He was the only good thing that happened to him when they flew back to his father's country.

They filled the hours with boisterous laughter and interesting stories. They didn't notice the time and just continued talking.

"By the way, where will you live now?" Jaemin asked.

"In your house, of course. I heard you have it all on your own," Jeno answered. Jaemin rolled his eyes but didn't complain. Sure, he enjoyed being alone but Jeno was a calm type of person plus he knew his likes and dislikes so it wouldn't be that hard to live with him.

"Do you remember the girl I used to talk about?" Jaemin asked out of nowhere.

"You don't talk about your flings though," Jeno said and Jaemin glared at him. With just a simple eye contact, Jeno instantly get what Jaemin meant. "You mean your childhood friend in your mother's hometown? Did you see her again?"

"I did. And unfortunately, she's going to NeoU as well."

Jeno's eyes widened because of the relevation. He motioned Jaemin to keep going. Jaemin told him how they met for the first time, it was when you accidentally drank his poison drink.

"Well, her reaction was way better than mine! Remember when I tasted it for the first time and I spat it out on our squeaky clean white couch? My ass got beaten by my mother all because of you."

"It's not my fault you were dramatic! It doesn't even taste that bad!" Jaemin defended. When it comes to his coffee, he wouldn't let anybody insult it.

"What do you mean it doesn't taste that bad? It's the worst thing ever!"

"My taste is elite. You just can't keep up."

"Whatever! Continue with your story."

Jaemin revealed that you recognized him and you didn't believe him when he said he wasn't Nana. Then, you two saw each other at the orientation but he paid you no attention. He could feel your stare boring holes on his back and he ignored it for three straight hours. He applauded himself for not looking back at you.

"Don't you miss her? You used to talk about her a lot. And when I say a lot, I mean you insert her name in every conversation," Jeno reminisced.

"I know that. I missed her, too, but I think it's better to just leave her in my past. That's where she belongs anyway."

"If she belonged in your past then why did she show up in your present? She kept staring at you because she wanted you to remember her. She literally remembered everything about you. Are you sure this is worth it?"

Jaemin contemplated for awhile. Sure, it would be nice to reconcile with you, but no result was ever good once he let himself get swayed by his emotions. He was a different person now. His reputation was more important than his well-being, that's what his grandfather would tell him.

He had a family reputation to preserve, his feelings being not his top priority.

So now that he's in a different city away from his suffocating life, he wanted to leave everything behind.

"She will move on and forget about me once I ignored her. I'm sure she's not that desperate to catch my attention. I don't want to do anything with the people that was a part of my past. I'm leaving them behind," Jaemin said in a firm tone. He wouldn't let anyone shake his already shaky ground.

"If that's what you want then I'm with you. You know that I'm your friend, I'll support you with whatever makes you happy, but I will interfere from time to time. I just don't want you to regret anything."

"Whatever, samoyed. She's just a childhood friend, her presence is not a big deal. Reuniting with her is pointless," Jaemin said but Jeno knew better. "Just make sure to help me with the household chores or I will kick you out of the house."

Jeno clicked his tongue. "Fine! Fine!"

They spent the rest of the day together, conversation about you completely forgotten.

Jaemin hoped that you should remain there, in the empty void at the back of his mind.

His decision was absolute.

He wouldn't let you in in his life again.
