Chapter 23

You spent the first two days of the festival with your friends, going to every booth and trying out food you had never tasted before. All the exhaustion you felt before and during the finals were washed away. College life was indeed one of the most crucial yet have the most enjoyable activities.

On the night of the second day, you were a nervous wreck.

"I have nothing to wear!" you exclaimed as you rummaged through your closet, throwing fabric after fabric. The entire room was a mess and Giselle was accidentally hit by the skirt you just threw away.

"What do you mean you have nothing to wear? Your bed is literally full of your tops alone," Giselle told you.

"But I already wore all of those," you complained and sat on the floor in despair. You were struggling to find a comfortable yet chic outfit for tomorrow. You wanted to make it look effortless but well put-together at the same time.

"You have a date with Jaemin?" Giselle asked. You sharply turned to face her.

"How did you know? I mean it's not really a date but how did you know it's him?"

Giselle could only roll her eyes. She had been doing it since you started panicking about what to wear. "Doesn't take a genius to guess. Besides, I'm certain that Jaemin will still be happy to see you no matter what you wear. But if that bothers you a lot, I'll lend you my precious help. There's a magic trick I would love to share with you."

"Are you going to act like my fairy godmother or something?"

"Yeah, a fairy godmother who's an expert in layering."

In less than fifteen minutes, Giselle picked three different outfits for you, made from all the clothes you scattered all over the room.

"You do wonders, don't you?" you said.

"Expect only the best from me."

You tried out all of it but in the end, you chose the white long sleeved top underneath a brown knitted vest paired with a beige tweed skirt that reaches your mid thighs. She let you borrow her white beret hat and brown ankle boots.

"You look so gorgeous!" Giselle squealed and admired you like a masterpiece.

"Thank you fairy godmother!" you exclaimed gratefully and gave her a hug.

"You don't have to worry about the curfew, the magic will last as long as you enjoy the moment," Giselle said. "And you can go home with your prince if you want. Just use protection to avoid any unwanted results."

"Giselle!"

The third day of the festival came and Giselle left first.

Jaemin was waiting for you downstairs, leaning on his gleaming car. He looked good as always but this time, he put in an extra effort for you. He was wearing a beige polo with two buttons undone exposing the skin of his toned chest, tucked in a dark faded jeans, secured with a black leather belt. His hair was most definitely the highlight of his whole look. His jet black hair was swept back, exposing his forehead, with only a few locks of hair dangling. He looked like a prince in casual clothing and everything about him was mesmerizing.

Little did you know that he was just as mesmerized when he saw you. Both of you acted as if you didn't have a dinner date two nights ago. None of you had ever voiced your true feelings but you're getting the hints.

"You look gorgeous," you complimented him first. It came out to you naturally.

One simple compliment from you was enough to send him spiraling. Compliments always mean everything to him when it's from you, and you rarely do that.

"Thank you. You're just as gorgeous."

"I know," you simply answered, not being able to think of a witty response. "Let's go!"

He opened the car door for you and you got inside. None of you spoke for the rest of the ride, too afraid to say something awkward. Or perhaps too anxious with your hearts beating so loudly. When you arrived at the campus, it was already packed with people. During the festival, the school was open even to outsiders to attract more enrollees. But today had the most visitors because WayV would perform tonight.

"I'm so excited!" you squealed in excitement while looking at the big posters of your favorite band.

Jaemin only rolled his eyes and said nothing. He knew you're going to chew him out if he said something bad about your idols. Besides, he spent two nights listening to all of their albums just so he could relate to you and he must admit, he liked all of their songs.

When you entered the campus, a flock of high school girls shrieked when they saw Jaemin towering over everyone else, thanks to his long legs. Also thanks to his prince-like looks, he stood out among the crowd. Most people didn't bother being discreet and took pictures of him shamelessly to which he was not pleased.

"Is he a celebrity? New member of WayV?"

"I don't know but he's so hot!"

You heard all of those buzzes from the people around and you couldn't help but smirk at yourself. The guy they were gawking at followed you around like a lost puppy, gave you car rides, always ready to rescue you, took you out on a dinner date, gave you a customized necklace---

Why am I listing all the things that he did for me? You mentally asked yourself. You stopped what you were doing and unconsciously touched the moon necklace resting on your collarbones. It had became a habit when you're thinking about something or slightly growing anxious.

"You wore it," Jaemin said beside you as he eyed the necklace.

"Never took it off," you said. Jaemin gave you a satisfied smile and you only scoffed. He was so proud of himself without a doubt.

One of the highschool girls you heard earlier approached the two of you, brave enough to ask Jaemin for a picture.

"Go ahead," Jaemin said and the girls shrieked once again. They thought they could get a solo shot but Jaemin pulled you close to him, wrapping his arm around your shoulders.

"What are you doing?" you hissed and tried to push him away but he only pulled you closer.

"They will leave me alone if they thought you're my girlfriend," he said, but his idea didn't work.

"OMG! His girlfriend is so pretty!"

"Are they really a couple? They look so perfect!"

"Quick! Take a picture and post it on Insta."

"Well I guess this is better than I expected," Jaemin said before holding your hand and running away from the highschool girls. Both of you were running as if your life depended on it. Your eyes went down to your intertwined hands and you couldn't help but smile as you felt the adrenaline and exhilaration.

You stopped at one of the food stalls located near the auditorium where the freshmen orientation took place.

"I kinda missed your silver hair," you blurted out, still breathless.

"What? Why?" he asked, puzzled. If there's one thing Jaemin hated, it's moving around. His hands were on his knees while he's gasping for breath

"Nothing... I just remembered. You were so rude to me back then... but now..."

"What about now?"

I like you now.

"I like your black hair," you said instead. "Look! I want to see what's inside that booth. Let's go there first."

You dragged Jaemin along from booth to booth, trying all the games and food stalls you hadn't had the chance to go to yesterday and the other day. It was hard to believe that Jaemin was enjoying himself considering that he disliked crowded places. You took a lot of pictures with him and he showed off his photography skills.

"Seriously, Na Jaemin. What is something that you can't do?" you asked while admiring the pictures of you that he took. "You seriously work wonders! How come you're good at everything? I'm jealous."

"Being mediocre is something I can't do," he said and you only rolled your eyes. He was right, though. If God had favorites, Na Jaemin was definitely one of them.

"I'm so exhausted. Can we take a rest... uh... over there!" you said, pointing at the bench underneath the shade of a large tree.

"Okay, you go and occupy it. I'll go and buy our food," he said. Luckily, there were a few people around and you could have some peace and quiet. After a few minutes, Jaemin arrived to join you while carrying a tray of corndogs, egg roll, cotton candies, and two bottles of water.

"Thank you!" you thanked him with a wide grin before digging into the food. None of you talked while eating. It was nice enough to enjoy a moment of relaxation after mingling with a huge crowd and a noisy environment.

"I never would have thought I would enjoy this," Jaemin admitted. "I used to skip school whenever we have festivals before. Jeno was right when he said I was missing out."

Regret flashed across Jaemin's eyes as he recalled all the moments he had wasted. He locked himself away, preventing himself from tasting a little bit of joy. You recognized that look, and you hated seeing it.

"Let's enjoy this night, then!" you said, your eyes sparkling in excitement. "Let's make a lot of memories together!"

Jaemin broke into a small smile. "I would love that."

"Oh by the way, where's Jeno?" you asked, finding it unusual that Jeno wasn't around. They were usually inseparable, practically tied to each others' hips.

"He's with Karina right now," Jaemin answered and you almost choked on your food. "Take it easy!"

"Jeno and Karina?!" you exclaimed "Are they dating?"

Jaemin gave you an incredulous look. "Dating?! Hell no! Can't they just hang out with each other without any involvement of romantic feelings? They're just good friends!"

It wadnt supposed to hurt. It wasn't even pertaining to you and your situation but somehow, his words stung.

All the excitement you felt drained down your body as you processed Jaemin's words. It made sense. He said it himself, they can hang out with each other without developing any special feelings. Did the same thing apply to your relationship? As if sensing your anxiety, Jaemin looked at you and saw the depletion in your energy.

"Are you okay? Are you tired?" he asked worriedly.

"I'm okay," you said, faking a smile. "I'm fine, don't worry. Just a little exhausted."

And a little hurt because it was too late to go back now. You had developed something irrevocable, unconsciously taking a risk without seeing the bigger picture. You were dumb and stupid, and perhaps a little lonely but there was no going back.

Jaemin managed to break your heart without actually being aware of it.

After resting for a few minutes, you both decided to walk around. The conversation earlier was still stuck in your mind and replaying inside your head.

Can't they just hang out with each other without any involvement of romantic feelings?

I don't know! Can they? You asked yourself. Because it was obvious as hell that you saw Jaemin as more than just a friend.

You hid your emotions well by saying nonsensical things to keep the conversation going. Jaemin didn't notice this and was convinced that you were just tired. You were thankful that he brought his goldfish brain today because you had no intention of explaining why you were down. As you passed a couple of booth, one of the seniors in your department saw the two of you and approached you.

"(Name)! Jaemin!" your senior called and both of you stopped walking. "Are you busy?"

"Yes."

"No," you answered. Jaemin looked at you, his brows furrowed.

"Oh, are you in the middle of a date?" you senior asked. "Sorry, I'll just ask someone to look after our booth. We're short of staff."

"We'll do it!" you said, glad for the distraction. "We're not doing anything anyway."

"Really? So the two of you are not dating?" your senior asked, surprised.

"I don't think it concerns you if we're dating or not," Jaemin said bluntly and you glared at him. Your senior felt slightly ashamed for prying into your business so he simply just told you to go to the booth and help the others. When he walked away, you faced Jaemin.

"Why did you that? You could've been nicer!" you scolded him.

"Did you think what you did was nice? You didn't ask me if I wanted to help out or not! You just decided on your own," he argued back.

"Then don't help! Just roam around while I'm gone."

"I specifically asked you to spend this day with me, didn't I? It would be entirely pointless if you're out there serving in our booth while I'm walking around," he said. He grabbed your wrist which caught you off guard and walked to the direction of thw field. "Let's go. The sooner we start, the faster we finish."

There it was again, the bliss, the excitement, the thrill, the feeling you never wanted to go away. Your heart and mind were celebrating at the slightest touch and a smile was tugging both ends of your lips.

Focus!

You reached the booth and they were indeed short of staff. You saw how stressed your fellow students were running the mini-restaurant while you were out there having a date with Jaemin. Jeno and Karina were also helping out. Many customers visited the booth mainly to see the visuals of Jeno and Karina, and now that you and Jaemin just arrived to help, the customers would surely double.

"(Name)!" Karina called you. Beads of sweat trickled down her smooth forehead but she still looked so pretty.

"How can I help?" you asked immediately.

"Okay, um, get their orders first, list it on a paper and then we'll give it to the counter and the ones who are in charge there will give it to the cooks," Karina briefly explained and handed you a black apron. She gave you a small notepad and a pen and you started to work right away.

The complete opposite happened to Jaemin and Jeno.

"Why are you so slow? There are three customers waiting over there!" Jaemin scolded and Jeno and the latter was not amused.

"Why don't you go and get it then? If I didn't know any better, you're just forced to go here," Jeno replied.

"Exactly! That woman just can't say no. She's not supposed to help here anymore because she did a lot from the brainstorming, planning, and preparation."

"And you should be the one who's doing a lot of work because you didn't help us!"

A customer called Jeno and he scurried immediately to the one who called him, listing their orders. Jaemin noticed that some of their customers were growing impatient and he couldn't risk losing them so he did that one thing he couldn't expect he would be doing. He put on the black apron, a notepad and pen from the basket, and approached the customers.

"Good day, beautiful ladies! May I take your order?" he asked with a pleasant smile. The girls who were complaining earlier were now mesmerized and speechless at the gorgeous man in front of them. Jaemin had never tried working as a waiter before and he would certainly love to try, and now was his chance.

Jaemin was more efficient than you thought. In a short amount of time, he was able to appease the voracious customers, offer them refreshments while waiting, and other services that he was enthusiastic enough to provide.

A teenage mom needed to go the restroom but her baby wouldn't stop crying. The other customers out there were eyeing her and she shrunk in her seat, embarrassed at herself.

"Baby, please stop crying. What do you need?" The mom tried to give her baby a toy but he only threw it away. Jaemin, who was watching the whole scene, approached the woman.

"Can I help you with anything?"

"Oh no, no, it's alright," the woman answered.

"Please, Ma'am. I insist," he said.

"Can you look after my baby for awhile, I really need to go to the bathroom," the woman answered.

"Most certainly," Jaemin replied. He carried the baby in his arms and gently patted his back. It turned out that the baby was sleepy. Jaemin gently bounced back and forth until the baby finally fell asleep in his arms, his small head resting on his wide shoulders.

An audible dreamy sigh from the women was heard. You were also watching him just like the rest.

Your heart pounded inside your heart as you watched Jaemin with a baby in his arms. That image suit him well, you knew he was going to be a good father someday. A good husband to his loving wife and a fine home. There was a high possibility that it's not you, but you somehow felt happy just thinking that there's someone out there who's going to make him happy someday.

"If he's still not your boyfriend, I don't know what you're doing with your life," Karina whispered beside you as she watched you look at Jaemin with admiration.

"Maybe he's just too good for me," you replied.

"You're a catch! What are you talking about?"

"There's always a better woman out there."

"But you're the best one for him."

You refused to believe Karina's words, afraid that you might be put under the illusion that you had a chance. You realized that you're falling deeper each day and soon, it might be too late for you to save yourself.

Nighttime came and your seniors dismissed you from the booth to enjoy the upcoming performance by a famous band called WayV. You were bouncing up and down in excitement as Jaemin joined you outside the tent.

"Hurry up!" you told him and ran to the middle of the field where a makeshift stage was built, complete in sound system, and special lighting for best experiences.

"Wait!" Jaemin said. He put a pair of sneakers on the ground. "Change into these. You've been wearing those boots for a whole day. I know your feet are killing you."

It was true though. While you were busy, Jaemin was watching you. He noticed how you would uncomfortably shift your weight from one foot to another to ease the pain. Even though the heels were low, it was still uncomfortable to wear it while moving a lot.

"When did you buy these?" you asked.

"While you were changing. Hurry up if you still want to see the performance."

Jaemin borrowed a spare chair from the nearest booth and made you sit on it. Without a word, he held your leg and unzipped the ankle boot. Your protests fell on deaf ears as he put on the sneakers on you. He was being a gentleman and your frail heart couldn't handle it. He was everything you wanted, you had him within your grasp and yet it felt like he was still so far to reach.

"I also bought these," he said ang showed you WayV's official lightstick.

"Oh my God!" you exclaimed. "When did you buy these?" you asked as he handed you the other one.

"Yesterday. I wouldn't lose against the other fangirls out there, not even to you. Now let's go so my idols will see my beauty before everyone else!"

He ran away first and you followed after him, laughing at each other as you joined the big crowd in front of the stage.

Thanks to Jaemin's tall height, you were able fo squeeze in among the sea of bodies and steal a spot in front of the stage. Shortly after, WayV went up to the stage and you were screaming at the top of your lungs while waving the lightstick aggressively. Jaemin was surprised to see you acting strange than usual. But, he found it entertaining. He screamed as well and copied you and he got noticed by Ten, one of the members of WayV.

WayV sang and danced to upbeat songs such as Kick Back, Turn Back Time and Bad Alive. They also performed your personal favorites, Love Talk and Nectar which earned a deafening scream from the crowd. After that, they did a little speech to thank the people for watching them. When the speech ended, they went backstage to change their outfit and the staff arranged the instruments on stage.

"The next song we're going to sing is Let Me Love U. To all the lovesick fools out there, this is for you," Xiaojun said and the crowd cheered.

Alright yeah, ooh baby
You're just standing by the street
Yet I can't control the rhythm of my heartbeat, yeah
Can't think of an excuse so we can have an accidental encounter

You closed your eyes and you remembered when you first saw Jaemin at Starbuxks. It was amazing how fate made you meet each other again.

My body involuntarily moves towards you
Using all the ways to make you understand
Want you to fall in love uncontrollably too, no oh oh

While your eyes were closed, somebody was staring at you as if you were the only person at that place, in that moment. Though he tried to resist at first, Jaemin realized he was falling uncontrollably.

Ooh, a perfect blend of sweetness
My pace got messed up when I met you
Ooh, girl you're mine, all mine baby

You were a mess he was willing to get involved with. It was crazy how a single person could mess up his mind, but then again, you're not just anybody else.

The vocalists were singing the chorus and you were singing with them passionately. As if on cue, you looked at Jaemin the same time he looked at you and you were both singing the chorus while staring at each other and smiling. It almost felt surreal.

As the bridge part came, the people singing with you were pouring their heart out while singing every lyric. Beside you, Jaemin was just as overwhelmed.

He turned to face you, bodies pressed against each other. He caressed your face while staring deep into your eyes. You stared back and you were enthralled not only by his beauty but also because everything was blurry except for him.

"I have... I have something to tell you," he said and you felt a lump forming in your throat. Your heart was beating wildly in anticipation as his other hand glided down to yours and held it.

"What is it?" you asked, almost a whisper.

"I have fallen...

deeply in love with you."

You didn't have much luck hearing the last words because they were drowned by the sound of the fireworks. You looked up into the sky and saw colorful fireworks filled the heavens with a mesmerizing view. Jaemin looked up too. The view was beautiful but he was kind of disappointed that he couldn't entirely appreciate the beauty of fireworks.

After the performance, Jaemin excused himself and went to the restroom and you waited at the nearby bench. When the overwhelming happiness subsided, that's when you remembered how he held your face and hand while looking at you. He was saying something serious but you didn't hear it.

Was he confessing earlier? You thought but you shook your head. That's so impossible!

"(Name)!" someone called you and you turned around immediately, only to find that it's not Jaemin but Sungchan.

"Hello, Sungchan!" you greeted him back as he occupied the seat beside you. "The fireworks are beautiful, aren't they?" you said as you glanced at the starless sky.

"Yes, but I know someone who's more beautiful than the fireworks," Sungchan said.

"I didn't know you're the type to say pickup lines," you said and laughed. Sungchan joined you as well.

"I didn't know either," he admitted. "But really, I'm serious. You look beautiful tonight."

"Thank you," you replied and gave him a small smile.

"Too bad I'm late."

"Late? For what?"

Just when he was about to answer, Jaemin just got out of the restroom and him and Sungchan momentw locked eyes.

"Nothing. Be careful on your way home." Sungchan patted your shoulder and left you. Jaemin's gaze followed Sungchan until he disappeared.

"What was that?" he asked.

"Oh! Jaemin!" you said, surprised. "That was Sungchan."

"I know. I saw him. What did he say."

"He said to be careful on my way home."

"Of course you'll be safe, you're with me. What else?"

"He said that he was late for something, I don't know what. He didn't tell me. And he also said I looked beautiful tonight."

"You're not just beautiful tonight," Jaemin said in a slightly raised voice. "You're... beautiful every day."  A tinge of pink spread across his cheeks and he looked down to hide it. Good thing it was dark because you didn't notice.

"Um... thanks?"

"Let's go. I'll take you home. It's getting late."

The car ride was silent and Jaemin was gripping the steering wheel tighter than usual. You didn't miss the look of confusion in his face and his slightly unbalanced temper. He was a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. His car arrived in front of your dorm but you didn't get out. Instead, you looked at him.

"What?" he finally asked because you wouldn't stop staring. "Stop that. It's creepy."

"Back at the field, you were saying something right?" you started. "I'm sorry I didn't hear it. Can you repeat what you said?"

"Nothing, it was nothing," Jaemin said without looking at you. He was a bad liar.

"Please, tell me."

"It was nothing really."

"Then why did you touch my face and held my hand like this," you said and copied what he just did earlier. You caught him off guard. You let go as he was just leaning to your touch and his disappointment increased. "How did it feel?"

"Frustrating."

"Exactly. It's frustrating because you touched me like that but you don't want to tell me why. You're messing with me, aren't you?"

"No! I would never do that!"

"Then why?"

Jaemin didn't answer. He grabbed your hand and rested it on his cheek, leaning on its warmth. Something blossomed inside you. It wasn't the usual chaos of butterflies or the wild beating of your heart. It was something comforting. Like nothing else matters even if the world caved in. Just you and him frozen in this moment.

"I don't have the courage to say it to you now but believe me, I will, when the right time comes."

His words were reassuring though you felt a little bit of fear. He opened his eyes and leaned closer. It was an intoxicating feeling, waiting what he'll do next.

He planted a soft kiss on your forehead.

"It's getting late. Get inside now."

"I don't want this to be over..." you whispered but loud enough for him to hear. You were breaths apart, he could close the distance between you but he didn't. He chose to stay like that, close to you but not reaching further.

"We'll have more time. Soon."
