Chapter 10
The thought about the person who left you that paper bag full of food and sanitary pads wouldn't leave you alone. Who could it possibly be? Only Giselle knew what you were suffering about. Could it be her? Putting that aside, the bar of chocolates made you feel a little bit better though the tolerable but seething pain was still there.
You read the note that you found inside the paper bag when you almost emptied its contents.
"I hope these food will help you feel better."
The penmanship was neat and elegant, the kind you see on fancy invitations. It was not familiar. You're not sure if it was Giselle's since you had never seen her handwriting.
"I'll just ask her when I get home," you muttered to yourself as you slowly got up and fixed your disheveled hair. You straightened your clothes and slung your bag on your shoulder, fishing your phone out of your pocket. When you looked at the time, you almost screamed in shock, eyes popping out of their sockets.
It was only five minutes before the time of dismissal of your last period. You slept during your second subject to your last period in the afternoon, skipping lunch break. No wonder hunger woke you up. With a heavy sigh, you departed from the clinic and went your way home to your dorm. You got a lot of explaining to do to your professors, and you didn't see Jaemin today to thank him for yesterday.
You were sure you saw him earlier morning but wasn't able to say anything to him because the pain was almost unbearable. Thinking about tomorrow, you trudged your way back home. When you got back to the dorm, you came across your mother's friend, BoA who was carrying a huge container.
"Oh, (Name)! There you are!"
"Good afternoon, Miss BoA," you greeted.
"I told you to just call me Auntie," she said. "Anyway, I got this from my friend, Key. He lives in a different place and sent these peaches. I couldn't eat all of it so I'm planning to give some to you. Do you eat peaches?"
Your eyes twinkled with her question. "I do! I love peaches!"
BoA gave you a kind, almost motherly smile. "Here you go. Get as many as you want."
With a happy smile, you merrily skipped to the elevator, pressing the button to the fifth floor. You got home and Giselle wasn't around yet so you took your time in the shower, soaking your body in a relaxing hot bath, pain slowly dissipating. After that, you got dressed in your pajamas and busied yourself with the peaches.
When you took the first bite, you remembered a memory from the past.
About a certain someone who loved peaches.
You and Jaemin got home from elementary school and decided to play together. He visited your house today and your mother was overjoyed.
"My handsome boy, Nana, how are you today?" your mother asked. The fact that she welcomed him first and not you wasn't shocking. You were used to it, besides, his mother treated you the same.
"I'm alright, thank you. I'm here to play with (Name) today."
"Did she force you?" your mother asked.
Jaemin glanced at you. You remembered how you threw a tantrum earlier because he wanted to take a nap instead of playing. You gave him a warning glare before going to your room to change your clothes. Jaemin was left in his uniform and was too lazy to go home first.
After you got changed, you saw your mother preparing lots of food in front of Jaemin. The food that caught your attention was the plate full of slices of peaches.
"Yay! Peach!" you exclaimed and ran towards the table, knocking Jaemin.
"(Name)," your mother called you in a stern tone, a warning to behave. "Be nice."
"I'm sorry," you told Jaemin but your eyes were glued on the peaches. Beside you, Jaemin's mouth was also watering while staring at his favorite fruit. The moment your mother gave you two a signal to dig in, it was like a food war. A battle between you and Jaemin.
"I'll leave for a minute, don't do anything rash, okay? (Name), you behave yourself. Jaemin, honey, just eat whatever you want and tell me if (Name) did something to you."
"No worries, Auntie," Jaemin replied with a smile while you only snorted.
Finally, only one slice of peach was left. You plunged your fork on the sweet flesh of the fruit the same time Jaemin did.
"Give it to me," you said.
"Your mother told me that I can eat whatever I want," Jaemin countered.
"Then eat those," you motioned to the other food your mother prepared.
"Why don't you?"
Jaemin had no plans of losing and you were close to getting angry. You glared at him and he only raised his eyebrows at you, challenging you further.
"Give it to me."
"No."
"I said give it to me!"
"I said no!"
You were glaring hard at him and he wouldn't budge. All of a sudden, frustrated tears rolled down your plump cheeks and Jaemin was taken aback.
"Why are you crying?"
"You wouldn't give me the peach!" you cried even more. Jaemin heaved a disappointed sigh before removing his fork from the peach.
"Here, you can have it."
You smiled at the memory but wanted to beat yourself at the same time. You couldn't believe how spoiled you were and Jaemin was always the one who had to sacrifice.
Jaemin wanted that last slice of peach but he gave it to your rotten ass because you cry at any minor inconvenience.
Somehow, you felt that you were unfair to Jaemin, perhaps, a little too much. With a sigh, to guiltily chewed the last slice of peach you were eating. There were still more inside the refrigerator so you got five, peeled and sliced it before putting it in a cute container.
"A thank you gift for Jaemin," you said to yourself and smiled. Nana or not, Jaemin loved peaches. It wasn't something you asked yesterday but you felt that you were right.
A few minutes later, you heard the lock beep and the door opened, Giselle entering the dorm with a dramatic sigh.
"Today is so exhausting!" she said as she dumped her bag in a corner and took off her shoes.
"Welcome home," you greeted her from the kitchen.
"Oh, it's you (Name)," she absentmindedly said and it took her a few seconds to register who spoke to her. She hurried to the kitchen and found you washing the dishes. "(Name)!" She ran towards you and gave you a hug. "Where were you? You didn't join us for lunch earlier."
Your eyebrows furrowed as your features set in a deep frown. "So it wasn't you?"
"What are you talking about," Giselle asked, obviously puzzled. You dried your hands using a towel as you went to your bag sitting on the couch and fished out the note. You handed it to Giselle.
"Is this your handwriting?"
"Nope. Mine is way different from this. This lowkey looks like a calligraphy though, mine looks like a doodle."
"Then who could it be..."
"Care to explain me everything? I really can't follow, you know."
With a sigh, you both got seated on the couch and you explained to her what happened earlier. When she heard about the sanitary pads and tampons inside the paper bag, she flipped which scared you.
"OMG!"
"Giselle! I swear to God you're going to kill me!" you said and lightly smacked her arm.
"Open your goddamn phone and go to that goddamn school page and you'll understand!"
Bringing your phone, you opened the app and typed the name of the school page. You didn't have a hard time finding the post because it was the most recent one.
It was a picture of Jaemin in front of the counter filled with food, the same ones you ate earlier, pads and tampons. Above the picture was a caption posted by an anonymous person.
I saw Na Jaemin earlier buying food and sanitary pads! Does he have a girlfriend? Who is it for? Do you have any hunch? Damn! I wish I was that girl!
You opened the comment section and saw people commenting names. Karina, Winter, Giselle, Ningning, and even you, were mentioned. The five of you were the top pick.
Your heart lurched when you looked at the picture again. It's obvious that he was in a hurry, his hair was disheveled and his mouth was slightly open, gasping for air after a long run. He wasnt in his usual cool demeanor and you couldn't help but think—
Is he so worried about me?
"Girl!" Giselle screamed once again. "It's you! OMG! I should've known!"
"I said stop screaming!"
"How can I? I should've known it was you! When I asked Haechan where were you, he said he didn't know. Nobody in the table knew except Jaemin. He said that you were resting. I just didn't know he would go an extra mile to take care of you!"
A smile was fighting to make its way to your lips and it took everything in you to hide it. Your face was growing hot and your cheekbones hurt. You knew he only did it out of kindness and concern as your friend but it still made your heart flutter.
"I should thank him tomorrow. I owed him twice."
"And how will you thank him?" Giselle asked and wiggled her eyebrows, looking at you with a foolish grin.
"Whatever is running in your mind, you're wrong. I'll give him peaches tomorrow."
"Oh we have peaches? Why didn't you say so?"
Giselle shot up from her seat and raced to the kitchen. She was surely gobbling the peaches down so you went to your contacts to text Jaemin. You should at least thank him through text first.
You almost dropped the phone when it rang, Jaemin's name displayed on the screen.
"What should I do? Shit!" you panicked like a stupid girl. You took a deep breath first before swiping the screen, answering his call. It was totally unexpected for him to call you, and this will be the first time you'll talk to each other through the phone.
"Hello?"
"I came back to the clinic earlier and you weren't there anymore. Did you go home already?"
You chewed on your lower lip, surprised by his deep voice and the concern laced on his tone. He was totally different from the Jaemin you met at Starbuxks and butterflies kept pestering your stomach.
"Yeah, I got home already. I have a question though."
"Shoot."
"Are you the one who left the paper bag for me?"
You heard a chuckle on the other line followed by shushing noises. Jaemin was driving with Jeno and you were on speaker. Jeno had a hunch that you were the girl in the post, and he was right.
"Yeah... that was me..."
"Thank you so much," you said and your face split into a grin so wide it almost hurt. "My condition got better because of it. I'm sorry I wasn't also able to thank you for taking a walk with me last time."
"You sleep like a dead log."
He tried to insult you but that's the best he could. He, as well, felt something strange stir inside him and he couldn't fight it.
"I know! But thank you. Do you like peaches?"
"I love peaches."
"I'll bring you a whole container tomorrow."
"I'm looking forward to that."
You talked for a short while, bickering about the smallest things because you didn't want to end the call but in the end, you did. You held your phone close to your chest and when you turned around, you saw yourself in the mirror grinning from ear to ear, an ecstatic expression you had never seen before painted on your face.
"I haven't seen you smile in a while," Jeno commented which made Jaemin snap his head at him, completely aware of the smile in his face.
"I'm not smiling," he denied as he chewed the insides of his cheeks.
"I see, this whole friendship thing is doing you good."
"Stop teasing me."
However, that only made Jeno tease him a lot more.
"So you found her?"
Jaemin rolled his eyes. "Obviously."
"Are you happy with this setup? You and (Name), starting your friendship all over again?" he asked. If there's one thing Jeno would wish for, it's his best friend's happiness. They had been with each for so long but he rarely see him happy.
Jaemin didn't need to think for long. "Of course."
Jeno smiled, the kind where it reaches his eyes and forming a crescent moon. "I'm happy for you too."
They talked about a lot things, two best friends who had been together for almost half their lives. Their connection was even better of that of Jaemin's own blood and he wished he had a younger sibling, someone he could talk to about the things that troubles him in their family.
And no matter what topic there was, the answer was always you.
The next day, you were waiting at the cafeteria, sitting beside Haechan and waiting for the others.
"I saw Doyoung sunbae earlier," Haechan said and your ears perked at the mention of yout senior's name.
"Where?" you asked, trying not to show a hint of curiosity. Play it cool and he would not know.
"At the library. That guy loves to read so much I wonder where does he put all the information he read," he said as he took a gulp of Coke. "There was a stack of books in front of him so I offered him help."
"And?"
"He told me, I knew there's still some kindness left in you!" Haechan imitated Doyoung's facial expression and gestures when he said that. You could only imagine how ecstatic Doyoung was when the spawn of Satan offered him help. But knowing Haechan, he would not do it for free.
"I'm sure you did something evil."
Haechan scoffed in disbelief. "Me? Evil? Have you ever seen an angel? If not, then you're looking at one."
"You'll never know what angels look like because you lived in hell your entire life."
"That's not the point!" Haechan retorted. "After I helped Doyoung sunbae, I didn't leave and just stared at him. He must've been weirded out so he asked me why I was still standing there so I said, Aren't you going to treat me? I'm your junior and I helped you out."
Both of you bursted out laughing, tears of joy brimming your eyes while clutching your stomach. Doyoung must have resented Haechan even more. You were too busy laughing that you didn't notice Giselle arrive, a strange girl walking beside her, nervously gripping the hem of her sweater.
"What's so funny?" Giselle asked and took a seat beside you. Her company was still standing there, waiting to be introduced. You wiped your tears and calmed yourself down. Haechan was still rolling on the floor while laughing his ass out. It took him a good minute to stop laughing.
"You're here!" you exclaimed when you saw Giselle and your eyes darted to the girl standing. You squinted your eyes, trying to remember where you had seen her. She looked oddly familiar.
"Everyone, this is Hong Nayoung my classmate from Art History," Giselle said and gestured at the girl.
"The girl who bumped into Jaemin," Nayoung spoke in a soft voice.
"Oh that's you!" Haechan exclaimed while pointing at Nayoung, recognition etched on his face.
This was the first you had seen Nayoung up close. The first adjective you thought was pretty. She had an oval-shaped face with a well-defined jaw, bright and sparkling eyes, a pointed nose, glossy lips, and pinkish cheeks. Her hair was tied into a messy bun, strands of straight black hair framing her face.
"Hello, Nayoung! I'm (Name) and this is Haechan." You extended your hand and Nayoung took it.
"I know, your squad is quite popular, even around nobody's like me," she replied.
"Who are you calling nobody? There's literally a flock of guys waiting for you outside earlier," Giselle said.
"Those guys were waiting for you, not me. You're more popular than me, remember?" Nayoung said and gave Giselle a sweet smile. You and Haechan looked at each other, a simple eye contact holding a thousand messages, which you got all of it.
Haechan cleared his throat before leaning on the table, clasping his hands in an interrogating manner. "So... Nayoung, what brings you here?"
"I'm here to apologize to Jaemin for what happened last time," she replied.
"Did I just hear Jaemin's name?" Jisung asked.
Your attention moved from Nayoung to Jisung who just arrived together with Chenle and Renjun.
"Aren't you the girl who bumped into Jaemin?" Renjun asked while looking at the girl.
"Is that what people call me now?" Nayoung worriedly asked.
"No," Chenle answered, his arms crossed. "It's just us because we're the only ones who saw you. I doubt people even remember your face."
There was an awkward silence in the table because of Chenle's blunt remark. You felt nervous on what's about to come down but Nayoung handled it well.
"I'm grateful. At least I could still continue living a normal life," she replied.
"You could have just apologized like a normal person that day," Haechan said and Nayoung looked surprised before looking down, feeling guilty.
"What's going on?" Mark, who just arrived with the girls, asked. You also saw Jeno and Jaemin entered the cafeteria, walking side by side. Minutes after turning the cafeteria into their own runway, they arrived at your usual table.
Everyone's attention was focused on the strange girl standing awkwardly across you. When she saw Jaemin, she raised her head and handed him a container.
"I'm really sorry for being rude to you last time. I know I should've apologized right away but something unpleasant happened to me that day and it spoiled my mood. I'm really sorry!"
Nayoung bowed so low while her arms were extended in front of Jaemin, the latter only gave her a blank stare.
"Who are you?"
Jeno, who got the situation right away, explained everything to Jaemin. "I swear you had a memory of a goldfish," Jeno said.
"I only remember important things," he replied before his eyes discreetly moved to you. "and people," he added. You didn't know if it was an insult towards Nayoung or just a simple statement from Jaemin. Still, he grabbed the container from her and sat down across you. He opened it saw a heaping slices of peaches.
Your eyes moved from Jaemin to Nayoung who was worriedly looking at Jaemin, waiting for his reaction.
"Thanks," he muttered before closing the lid.
Unconsciously, your hand clutched the container full of peaches you brought for Jaemin. Giselle was looking at you with watchful eyes. She must've felt the change in your mood so she held your hand to comfort you.
"You can sit with us if you like," Karina offered Nayoung.
Nayoung's eyes widened and moved her arms frantically. "No thank you! That's a generous offer but this table is only for the table of visuals. People will attack me if they saw me sitting here with you."
"Nonsense! Just sit down," Winter said, pulled Nayoung and made her sit down on a vacant chair.
Your group started eating but you were only playing with your food, your mood affecting your appetite. Jaemin noticed it, he never missed anything, anything that has something to do with you. He was eyeing you while you were unaware.
"Are you okay?" Giselle whispered beside you.
"Yeah, I just have no appetite. I think I should rest," you told her and she nodded understandingly.
You excused yourself from the group and left the table. You didn't know exactly where you should go so you decided to just take a stroll. Unknowingly, you had an uninvited company.
"Wasting food is bad," Jaemin spoke behind you and you jumped in shock.
"Jaemin!" you exclaimed angrily and you started smacking his arm which he didn't even bother dodging. "What are you doing here?"
"Why did you leave?"
You heaved a sigh. "I have no appetite."
"I thought you'll give me peaches today?"
You turned around and started walking away. "Nayoung already gave you peaches."
"Is that her name? I don't remember."
"Jeno was right, you do have a memory of a goldfish. It's not surprising if you forget your name as well."
"That actually happened. It was after a dance performance and we were asked to introduce ourselves. I told the crowd my name was Jeno."
You bursted into fits of laughter, unable to grasp the fact that this perfect man had a flaw, and it was a cute one. While you were laughing, Jaemin was staring at you adoringly as if you held all the stars in the universe.
"Should I call you goldfish?"
"Don't you dare."
"Why not? It's cute?"
"If you're going to call me goldfish, should I call you sulky? Because you sulk a lot."
"What are you even talking about? I'm not sulky!" you defended yourself.
"Whatever, just give me my peaches."
"No way! These are mine, you already have yours!"
You sat on a bench while keeping your bag away from Jaemin's hands. He didn't want to say it but his mouth was already watering with the thought of his favorite fruit and he was willing to do anything to have it.
He took a seat beside you and you scooted away. He moved closer and you moved away. It continued until you hit the corner and had nowhere to go. You were about to stand up but he trapped you between his arms, your back pressed tightly on the arm rest.
He realized what he just did, however, he couldn't bring himself to pull away. You were looking at him with wide eyes, your faces were so close that you could feel his minty breath fanning your face. There was a strange glint in his eyes, something you had never seen before. Something he wasn't aware he was capable of feeling or showing.
Those short agonizing moments felt like forever. Butterflies going wild inside your stomach, his mouth slowly opening as his throat became dry, there was something painful yet comforting about the proximity.
"Got it!"
He pulled away from you, your bag in his hand. He took the container of peaches from it before throwing your bag back at you. You caught it just in time and watched with wide eyes as he turned his back and walked away.
"All for a goddamn peach," you muttered under you breath, still finding him unbelievable.
Meanwhile, Jaemin couldn't contain his heart beating wildly inside his chest, a warm, foreign sensation spreading within him like a drug consuming his system.
He was ecstatic yet terrified. Unsure if he was supposed to feel that way to you, his friend.
