Matt breathed heavily, his chest heaving as he stared up at Alfred F. Jones, who's red eyes glinted with malice, a horrible grin spread wide across his face. The young boy had just managed to remind all of his friend's souls of who they were while they resided inside the monster that hovered in front of him, his black wings beating and curled horns sticking out of from his head of blonde hair.
* Strangely, as your friends remembered you...
* Something else began to resonating within the SOUL, stronger and stronger.
* It seems that there's still one last person that needs to be saved.
* But who...?
Matt's violet eyes widened in sudden realization, and he reached his hand out, the sweater on his arm torn and ripped to reveal his pale, bruised skin, decorated with several gashes and burns, all oozing blood. "Alfred!" He called out, a faint smile on his lips as he looked through his cracked glasses at the Angel of Death.
The monster's eyes narrow. "Huh? What are you doing...?!" Alfred could have guessed that Matt would attempt to save his friends' souls and remind them of who they were, but he had not been expecting him to try and save his enemy's soul. However, it was too late as Matt's soul seemed to sync with Alfred's, and while Matt's mind urged Alfred to remember, memories came flooding through.
A human who looked similar to Matt laying on the ground.
Alfred discovering the boy as he attempted to pick himself up.
Alfred helping the boy to safety.
Alfred and the boy standing with Arthur and Francis, the boy with blonde hair's face hidden from view by an arm full of flowers.
*You feel your friends' SOULs resonating with Alfred!
Matt blinked, his throat burning with a bittersweet sadness over seeing Alfred's memories. The monster had his eyes closed, his facial expression almost mournful.
"Wh... What did you do...?" Alfred whispered, opening his fierce eyes. "What's this feeling...? What's happening to me?" He glared down at Matt. "No! NO! I don't need ANYONE!" He shot deadly flares of fire from his heads in droves, completely engulfing Matt so that there was little hope of escape. When the bombardment ended, Matt pushed him back up to his feet, urging Alfred again to remember. "STOP IT! Get away from me! Do you hear me? I'll tear you apart!" He shot more flames, but this time, they were few and far slower. Matt reached out to him again, urging him to remember with a gentle smile on his lips.
"Matt..." Alfred closed his eyes, "Do you know why I'm doing this...? Why I keep fighting to keep you around...?" Now, the only attack coming from the monster was a gentle rain of flames that leapt out of Matt's path if he reached out to them. "I'm doing this... Because you're special, Matt. You're the only one that understands me. You're the only one who's any fun to play with anymore." His eyes snapped open, glaring again, swimming with emotion. Matt urged him to remember again. "No... That's not JUST it. I... I... I'm doing this because I care about you, Matt. I care about you more than anyone else!"
Matt urged him again.
"I'm not ready for this to end. I'm not ready for you to leave. I'm not ready to say goodbye to someone like you again..."
Matt urged him once more.
Alfred's face contorted into the that of pure agony. "S o , p l e a s e . . . S T O P d o i n g t h i s . . ." He yelled, tears gathering in his eyes. "A N D J U S T L E T M E W I N ! ! !" He screamed, light gathering the tips of his fingers at tears poured down his cheeks now. He brought his hands in front of him, and shot a powerful beam of light straight at Matt.
But he didn't die.
"S T O P I T ! !"
His health dropped below what he usually could withstand, but he just wouldn't die.
"S T O P I T N O W ! ! !"
His remained crouched, his body on the very brick of disintegrating, but his DETERMINATION to save Alfred was far too strong.
Finally, Alfred's hands dropped in defeat. Matt could barely lift his head, but he reached out to Alfred again, pushing him to remember as his health recovered.
"Matt... "
Matt reached out again.
"I'm so alone, Matt..."
Matt urged him on.
"I'm so afraid, Matt..."
Again.
"Matt, I..."
Again.
"I..."
Suddenly, light filled the room, and Matt had to shield his eyes. When it faded, he looked up, only to come face to face with the REAL Alfred, who was sobbing into his arms, his glasses pushed up and sitting on his forehead as he cried. "I'm so sorry." He finally stated, before attempting to wipe the moisture away and calm down. It hardly worked, but he forced a smile anyways. "I was always a crybaby, wasn't I, Matt?"
He frowned as he remembered. "... I know. You're not actually Matt, are you?" Matt shook his head. Alfred squeezed his eyes shut again. "Matt's been gone for a long time." He glanced back up at Matt. "Um... What... What IS your name?"
Matt let out a relieved sigh. This whole journey, people had been referring to him as Matt, but he never quite had the opportunity to correct them. "Matthew."
Alfred raised a brow. "Matthew? That's..." He smiled. "A nice name. Matthew. I haven't felt like this for a long time. As a flower, I was soulless. I lacked the power to love other people. However, with everyone's souls inside me..." He frowned, but it recovered back to a gentle grin, "I not only have my own compassion back... But I can feel every other monster's as well. They all care about each other so much. And... They care about you too, Matthew.
He looked to his feet. "I wish I could tell you how everyone feels about you. Mathias... Berwald... Natalya... Toris... Francis. Monsters are weird. Even though they barely know you... It feels like they all really love you."
He squeezed his eyes shut and chuckled, before his face twisted in agony again. "Matthew... I... I understand if you can't forgive me. I understand if you hate me. I acted so strange and horrible. I hurt you. I hurt so many people. Friends, family, bystanders... There's no excuse for what I've done."
Matthew flashed a reassuring smile. "I forgive you, Alfred." He stated, his tone absolutely genuine.
Alfred's eyes widened, still miserable. "Wh... What?" Then, he smiled meekly. "Matthew, come on. You're... You're gonna make me cry again... Besides, even if you do forgive me... I can't keep these souls inside of me. The least I can do is return them. But first... There's something I have to do." His eyebrows furrowed with his own determination. "Right now, I can feel everyone's hearts beating as one. They're all burning with the same desire. With everyone's power... With everyone's determination... It's time for monsters... To finally go free."
With that, he closed his eyes and lifted his arms, the power of the souls lifting him into the air. The six colorful human souls surrounded Alfred, while the grey souls of every monster exploded outwards with power and speed. In front of Matthew's eyes, the human-made barrier cracked, and broke apart.
The barrier was destroyed.
Alfred floated back down, lowering his arms and turning sadly to Matthew. "Matthew. I have to go now. Without the power of everyone's souls... I can't keep maintaining this form. In a little while... I'll turn back into a flower. I'll stop being "myself." I'll stop being able to feel love again." He closed his eyes as Matthew's face fell. "So, Matthew... It's best if you just forget about me, OK? Just go be with the people who love you."
Matthew took a deep breath, walking forward and wrapping his arms around Alfred comfortingly. At first, he didn't respond to the contact, but as the seconds crawled on, Alfred returned the gesture and buried his head into Matthew's neck as the younger boy rubbed his back. He let a low, slow chuckle, tears falling from his eyes and soaking Matthew's sweater. "I don't want to let go..." He whispered sadly, but after a few moments, he lifted his head and released his grip on Matthew, who let go as well and backed up.
"Matthew... You're... You're going to do a great job, OK? No matter what you do. Everyone will be there for you, okay?" He turned away, wiping his face of moisture, and Matthew sniffed. "Well... My time's running out. Goodbye." At that, Alfred walked up ahead to the unknown. However, after a few steps, he turned and looked back to Matthew.
"By the way... Matthew. Take care of Mom and Dad for me, OK?"
With that, Alfred F. Jones disappeared into the darkness.
