The TV screen was static at first, before the commercial began playing.
It starts with a burger that was flipping through the air towards the viewer, "From the moment the meat hits the flames," a beef patty hit the surface of the grill, bouncing slightly as the flames shoot up and engulfed the burger. The scene changed to tomatoes, pickles, and lettuce flipping across the screen, "my stomach was growling without any shame," the scene changes again to a completed meal of a burger, fries, and a drink that seems to sparkle in the light, then again to a blonde man slightly resembling a shark, who takes a bit of the burger and winks at the camera, "And I know in my gut, it's been worth the 5.95." The price '$5.95' flashes in red next to the man. It changes one final time to the logo of the fast food chain who's commercial they were watching, "would you like a burger? From Pepe's Burgers."
"Whooooaaa..." Alfred muttered as he stared at the TV, his blue eyes wide with fascination, "You're song is on TV!" He shouted, turning to his father, who rubbed the back of his head awkwardly.
"Yeah, apparently Marty sold my song as a burger jiggle, and now I'm filthy stinking rich." He explained awkwardly to Sakura, flashing her a white check that was filled out for $10,000,000.
Alfred sighed, placing his hands on his hips. "The sweet smell of success."
Sakura leaned forward, her amber eyes narrowing at the screen. "What is this?" She inquired in confusion.
"You know when Amelia came to my concert, the night we met? I was playing this song!" Dennis explained excitedly.
"This is what did it?" Sakura muttered in utter shock and confusion, lifting a brow as she grabbed her chin, trying to find some logic in the situation. "Burgers?"
The redhead rubbed the back of his head again. "It wasn't about burgers back then," he pointed to the screen eagerly, "she probably would have liked this though, right?"
Sakura sighed in defeated, looking away with a sorrowful look in her eyes as she partially covered her mouth. "She would have loved it." She admitted softly. At that, she walked away from the van, leaving Dennis staring awkwardly after her while Alfred donned a look of sadness.
Dennis groaned, turning off the TV, and Alfred turned to him, trying to change the subject. "Sooo, what're you gonna do with all the money?"
"I don't know." Dennis admitted, grabbing his guitar and sitting inside the van. Alfred followed eagerly as he began playing. "Bright sunny day, don't cost nothing. Light summer breeze, don't cost nothing. What do I do, with all this money, when the only thing I want is you?" He asked, looking down at Alfred, who shrugged. "Palling around, don't cost nothing." He jumped off the back of the van, turning and dancing into Sakura's view, "Singing a song, don't cost nothing." She rolled in her eyes in frustration, before walking further away. "How do I spend, all this money? I'd rather just spend time with you."
Alfred stood. "You could buy a house. And a car."
"I guess that I can, but I've already got a van. I could put you through college!" Dennis sang.
"But I'm with the gems all the time." Alfred pointed out.
"I could buy you all the finest courses online!"
"What if we... Took a trip?" Alfred suggested.
"Do you think?" Dennis questioned.
"Yeah I do. We could take a vacation. We could go some where new!" Alfred said excitedly.
Suddenly, the two paused to think, before realization dawned on Dennis's face, and he leaped into the van, shifting through his stuff. "I know a place that's always exciting." He found what he was looking for and turned to Alfred. "The shows and the sights and the lights that are blinding." He held up the card, which read 'Greetings from Empire City', in different fonts, the city skyline in the background. "Empire City! I'm talking Empire City!" He sang, fist pumping the air. "The streets and the sounds and the buildings towering. Subways that run from Brooklyn to the Bowery! Empire City! Let's go to Empire City!"
They jumped out of the van, racing to the temple as Dennis repeated the lyrics he just sang, Alfred overlapping his words with his own as they rushed to pack Aflred's stuff into his hotdog bag, "Don't need money, but it could be funny. Let's go today, just point me the way, to-"
The last line, they stood up, extending their arms in the air excitedly, "EMPIRE CITY!"
And at the end, Alfred gestured to the side, "and let's bring Sakura."
"What?" Dennis asked in surprise while the thinner woman glanced back in utter horror.
"I don't know, past experiences have taught me that three's a crowd." She muttered disdainfully.
"Alfred," Dennis bent down and began whispering in his son's ear, "me and Sakura haven't gotten along that well since, well, since I started dating your mother." He stated, glancing to the painted picture of Amelia that hung above the door.
"Awww, come on, we're all one big family! It'll be great!" He explained to both of them. "Just you, me, Sakura, and don't forget Mom!" Alfred almost sang as he lifted up his shirt, revealing his rose quartz gem. Both Dennis and Sakura noticeably flinched.
Dennis's van pulled up to Le Hotel, and he walked up, ringing the bell at the counter and winking at the desk manager, who glanced at him with indifference. Dennis handed him a card, which had printed on it, 'Mr. Dennis: Bazzzillionaire'. When he looked back at Dennis, Alfred arrived, peering over the desk and slapping a stack of money on the surface.
The desk manager looked back up to Dennis, who was still smirking at him, before smiling widely. "Hey, shake a leg!" He shouted.
10 bellboys dressed in white suits peered out from around the lobby, startling Sakura greatly. "Hey shake a leg!" They echoed.
"It's Mister Dennis!" He gestured to the red head.
"It's Mister Dennis!" They repeated, lifting Dennis up.
"And he's here to spend his dough, all over the town!" The manager stated, two more bellboys scooping up Alfred, who laughed. Two other bellboys ran behind him, carrying Sakura, who lay flat in their grip, as stiff as a log.
"He's got the bucks!" The bellboys sang.
"I've got the ducks." Dennis assured them.
"It's all deluxe." They sang.
"It's all deluxe." Dennis confirmed, and the trio were set down at a fancy dining table, "When you're dining out with me, it's the finest steak and brie!" He stated, and the corresponding food items were presented to the group. Dennis stood up, standing on the table and dancing, "And if I break a table, it ain't no-" the table did in fact break, sending the the man sprawling on the ground, "WHOA!"
The manager stooped down with a concerned expression, but Dennis simply grabbed a bill out of his pocket. "Just bill it to my bank."
"A hundred bucks? Gee, thanks!" The manager swooned.
The trio was swept away again, this time to the elevator, which shot all the way up into the penthouse suite. The door opened, revealed fancy furniture, windows covering the entire wall of the room, a pool with a water slide, and a sparkling fountain. The boys quickly changed into fancy suits Dennis purchased, to which all the bellboys approved, while Sakura looked at them in complete confusion.
Alfred laughed as he slid down the water slide, still in his suit, into the water below. He came up for air as Dennis floated by, shades on and a drink in his hand as he sat in a black tube. Alfred's eyes landed on Sakura, who squatted near the edge of the pool, sticking her finger in it hesitantly. A bellboy swooped in, offering her steak, which she refused politely, before a second one bent down, offering her brie. She flinched away, obviously uncomfortable with being surrounded by two men she didn't know. Alfred and Dennis swam up to her, their heads out of the water just enough so that she could only see their eyes, before they grinned widely.
Sakura glanced down at her suit, doing a spin and smiling slightly. "I must admit,"
"You must admit," the boys sang after her, Alfred placing a hat on Sakura's head.
"It's a perfect fit!" She smiled, adjusting the hat.
"You look great in it!" They complimented.
"And those fountains I found wasteful," she gestured to said fountain, "are actually quite tasteful. This city's got it's charm," she bent down to Alfred, muttering in his ear, "unlike that termite-ridden barn." She stood up, glancing at Alfred as both of them began dancing a sort of tap dance, "And any time with Alfred makes for a delightful evenin'."
"You're having fun!" Dennis cheered.
"More or less." Sakura admitted.
Dennis grabbed her hand and placed his arm around her waist, spinning here around, "So dance with me! Just say-"
Sakura spun out of his grip, her eyes squeezed shut with horror, "NO!" She screamed, before her her eyes opened in alarm, realizing what she had just done. They bellboys, Dennis, and Alfred stared at Sakura in surprise, Dennis with almost a hurt expression. Sakura grabbed the hat off her head, her face flushing. "I-I, I mean..." She sighed, "Maybe later." She muttered, before walking off.
"Boo! You ruined the song!" One of the bellboys shouted.
"Sorry, guys." Dennis stated, handing them some money as Alfred stared off after Sakura sadly, "Thanks for singing with us." As they walked away, he placed a hand on Alfred's shoulder. "Don't worry about it, kiddo. It's... Always been this way."
The room was dark and messy now from being occupied by Dennis and Alfred, and Sakura walked through it, her gaze sad before she glanced back to the room they slept in. She pushed it open, revealing a floor littered with clothes and pizza boxes, the father and son duo fast asleep on the bed, snoring away. Sakura walked up to the bedside, her eyes filled with a sorrowful light, before she sighed, glancing at the pink roses that were kept in a vase at the bedside. She smiled slightly at the sight of them, "I was fine, with the men," she picked out a single rose, "who would come into her life now and again. I was fine, cause I knew, that they didn't really matter," she glared at Dennis, walking to the balcony, "until you."
Alfred's eyes snapped open, and he sat up and turned to see Sakura walking to the edge of the balcony, eyes trained on the rose. "I was fine, when you came," she clutched the rose to her chest, before spinning and dancing elegantly, then leaning on the glass barrier of the balcony, "and we fought like it was all some silly game. Over her, who'd she choose. After all those years, I never thought I'd lose." She dipped her head, her hat rolling off into her awaiting palm.
"It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? You won, and she chose you, and she loved you, and she's gone. It's over, isn't it?" She lifted the rose up again. "Why can't I move on?"
She leaped up onto the glass barrier, her balance perfect with no fear of falling. "War and glory," she placed her hat on her head, "reinvention." She pretended to sword fight with another gem, using the rose as a weapon. "Fusion, freedom, her attention." She turned the other way, strutting across the thin surface. "Out in daylight, my potential." She did a backflip, "Bold." She kicked outward, "Precise." She spun, "Experimental." She did the splits, before laying back, her hat placed on her chest, the rose over her heart. "Who am I now in this world without her?" She reached up to the sky, where a cloud took the shape of her and Amelia Jones holding hands. "Petty and dull, with the nerve to doubt her."
A second cloud appeared next to Amelia in the shape of Dennis, and Amelia turned to him, holding his hands, and leaving Sakura alone, abandoned, "What does it matter, it's already done? Now I've got to be there for her son!" She hopped off the glass, turning and gripping it as she stared out at Empire City. "It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? It's over, isn't it? Isn't it? Isn't it over? You won, and she chose you, and she loved you and she's gone!" She shouted, throwing the rose into the air, and the wind took it, sending it out of her reach forever.
A tear gathered in her eye as she stared after it, "It's... Over, isn't it? Why can't I move on?" The tear fell slowly down her face. "It's over, isn't it? Why can't I move on..."
Sakura walked slowly back into the room, before she looked up, gasping in horror. Alfred, who was now sitting slumped against the side of her bed, looked up sadly, before Sakura continued, "Dennis!" Alfred glanced up in shock, seeing his father was sitting on the opposite side of the bed, facing the wall. "You were... Awake." Sakura stated the obvious, flushing with embarrassment as Dennis slid on a white bathrobe.
"Nothing's gonna fix this, is it?" He muttered, before getting up and leaving the room.
"Dennis!" Sakura called for him to stop.
"Sorry you had to be around me..." He stated, before disappearing down the hall.
"Dad!" Alfred shouted after him, but to no prevail.
"I shouldn't have come along." Sakura whispered guiltily.
"No," Alfred said firmly, turning to his guardian, "this is exactly why I brought you."
In the dining room, the piano played beautifully as Dennis sat at the counter. He sighed miserably. "Cherry man," He mumbled to himself, before sticking another cherry in his mouth, and placing the stem in the cup that was already partially filled with them.
Behind him, someone cleared their throat, and Dennis turned to see Alfred standing there, blank-faced, holding Sakura's hand, who smiled nervously. Dennis got up, but the two looked each other up and down before turning away, hesitant. Alfred glanced between them, unsure of what to do, before the piano started playing a quicker tune. Alfred turned, walking up the pianist, before offering him a stack of money. The man took it and left quickly.
Alfred took a seat at the piano, cracking his fingers, and, much to everyone's surprise began playing, "Why don't you talk to each other? Why don't you talk to each other, just give it a try. Why don't you talk about what happened? I know you're trying to avoid it, but I don't know why. You might not believe it. You might not believe, it, but you've got a lot in common."
"You really do." A second, more feminine voice sang softly.
"You both of love me, and I love both of you!" Alfred sang, tears gathering in both Dennis's and Sakura's eyes, as well as Alfred's, which trailed down his face slowly as the grown ups began talking.
"Look, if I were you, I'd hate me too." Dennis stated.
"I don't hate you." Sakura sighed.
"But I knew how you felt about Amelia, but I stayed anyway."
"That wasn't the problem." She admitted.
"Then, what was?"
"She fell in love with you."
"Well, you know Amelia," Dennis smiled.
"She always did what she wanted!" They laughed, although tears stilled brimmed in their eyes.
"I know you both needed," Alfred began again, and Sakura offered Dennis her hand, "I know you both, needed," Dennis took it slowly, and they held each other's hands, stepping back and forth awkwardly as they attempted to dance, "someone who knows what you're going through. You might not believe it, you might not believe, it," as they danced, they got much more used to each other's movements, "but you've got a lot in common, you really do. You both love me and I love both of you! You both love me," Dennis spun Sakura, before they stretched apart, "and I love both," Dennis spun, and Sakura dipped him, holding him up easily with one arm, "of you."
They opened their eyes as the song ended, before smiling. The bellboys appeared out of every corner, cheering at the fact that the pair finally danced. They both laughed, before the manager approached, handing Dennis a sheet of rolled up paper inscribed 'Le Bill'. He picked it up, and cringed at the sight.
"Trailer made suits, those cost something. Room with a view," the bill unfolded, reaching down to the floor, "those cost something."
"Dancing with you," Sakura smiled.
"Don't cost nothing." Dennis grinned.
"Why we'd even come? We could have done this at home." Sakura questioned, before Alfred laughed happily.
They went out to the street and began packing up the van. "Singing a song, don't cost nothing." Sakura sang as she handed Dennis Alfred's hotdog bag, "Or was it palling around? Don't cost nothing." Alfred shook her head, indicating that she got the lyrics wrong, and she pressed her hand to her head in distress. "Getting it wrong,"
"Don't cost nothing." Dennis sang, smiling.
"I tried." She laughed awkwardly.
"I'm surprised you remembered any of it." Dennis complimented.
"What can I say? It's catchy." She blushed.
In the van, Alfred was slumped against his seat, his eyes sleepy as he looked to the front at Sakura and Dennis, who talked openly to each other. "It's over, isn't it? It's over, isn't it? It's over, isn't it?" He sang in a tired, relieved tone, the van passing a sign that said, 'Now leaving Empire State' and a second one that said, 'Welcome to Jersey'.
